I kind of doubt this is going to compete on price, but at least it's competing on features. It sounds like it'll support >1 input source, which will be nice for people who have two systems on their desk. Some people will appreciate the streaming apps, too; personally I'm disinclined to give a TV or monitor internet access.

My OCD can't un-see that thicker bottom bezel. :p

But good to see competition in the 5K space. Many will opt for Apple branded gear for the quality and matching aesthetic, but only to a point. Samsung may need to undercut Apple's pricing of the Studio Display by a significant amount (at least $250 or more).

Finally, some competition in the 5K market!
I'm looking forward to 5K 120Hz displays.
My Cooler Master GP27U 4K is so close to perfect, but it's just too buggy, especially with macOS deciding to run it in YPbPr mode.

Good to see multiple higher-than-4K options. Computer monitor progression has been pretty stagnant in resolution for a long time. I’d like to see the dual-4k in a smaller size, though.

At last... someone finally making a 27"/5K display.

As long as it's reasonably priced (and needs to be sub £/$1000) then I'll buy one. No mention of speakers, and would definitely be helpful to have those, and if the webcam is good then also plus points.

But essentially it just needs to be affordable.
I have the Studio Display. Speakers marginal. Would rather have a lower cost display and add my own, higher quality speakers PRN.

The copycat design is ruined with the camera sticking out the top like we using webcam in 1999.

The camera sticks out the top because it is extremely likely detachable/modular. The current M8 32" model:

" ... Plus, the camera cover and option to fully detach always protect your privacy.
... "

Not really a "copy cat" . Detachable camera. Height adjustable standard. on board smart assistant (bixby/Alexa). can run user apps on the monitor ( as opposed to a A13 dedicated is an even smaller subset of duties. ). It is closer to being a Samsung TV than Studio Display is close to being an Apple TV. It is close to being a 'TV' without a TV tuner. The 'path' to adding the "Smart Function" aspects is an entirely different one than Apple took. The Studio Display's is more a simple mapping of an iPhone 'smart camera' fuction into a webcam (and that is about it besides some audio). For Samsung the camera is an optional function.

Don’t like detachable or sticking out the top. That’s why I stopped using FireWire iSight 😂

Agreed. Though since I use dedicated studio monitors I prefer zero speakers in a display and less cost/complexity. That is what it so un-pro about the Studio Display: Advanced as the speakers may be, anyone who works in pro audio doesn't need the built-in speakers. And anyone using more than one display is paying for the speaker system twice, not to mention the environmental waste from a company who loves to send out green virtue signals.

While the press blurb regarding the M8 mentions a height adjustable stand there is nothing on the type of stand of the S9.

The current M8 (M80B) is height adjustable.

The portrait rotation is new to M8C. [oops edit] Portrait orientation for S9 is in one of the pictures linked in the initial thread article [ that pretty much mandates height adjustment. pic isn't in press release. perhaps in media kit. ] , but the lower down in the line up M5 and M7 models are not height adjustable. It would be somewhat odd if jump into the _9 class and be stuck with same kind of stand the lower end models have.

pretty good chance this is relatively close to a $1K priced monitor. In the general monitor marketplace, $1K and no zero stand adjustment is rare.

They don't mention more than one video input, but again one input would be quite odd given the likely price point due to competitive features at that price point in the general monitor market.

P.S. Did find portrait mode in media kit images. theverge of the picture has caption .

"...
You can rotate the ViewFinity S9 to a portrait orientation. Image: Samsung ..."

Also the camera is detached in the portrait photo. Typically rotation means extending to max height and then rotating. Rotating very rectangular screens at minimum height setting tend to bump into the desk/stand due to lack of clearance.

this is fantastic news and hope others will follow. Apple abused their 5k position for way too long. If Samsung prices this well, it will be a hit with mac users.

The Apple's version is insanely overpriced. Now, lets get 32" 6-7k version also and we all benefit.

I hope there will be more good news like this from CES. Can't wait

It's going to be deeply funny if the camera is better than the Studio Display's.

Kind of makes me wish I had waited, but the nano-texture finish on the Studio Display has been a quiet game-changer for me, their anti-glare is gonna have to be pretty hard to match up

Big fan of Samsung - for the simple reason Apple have to respect that market competitor (although, obviously, up the price for essentially the same thing) but then get proactive in the labs. Am I wrong in thinking Apple are expected to release a mid-budget and V2 display this year so this is just solid good news all round. Let the exactly same monitor wars (but at different prices) begin!!

ViewFinity S9 specs
  • 27-inch 5K panel (5120 x 2880)
  • 99% DCI-P3
  • Built-in color calibration engine
  • Average Delta E ≦ 21 color accuracy
  • USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity
  • Matte display finish
  • Built-in 4K webcam
  • Samsung Smart Hub

Matte display finish? Damn, it seems like I’ll have to end up getting a Studio Display if I want a crystal clear glossy screen.

Am I a niche of 1 for hoping to see much better multi-device support? Especially more flexibility as far as Picture-by-picture controls? I've got an "older" LG ultrawide and it's very limited as far as displaying two devices at the same time, like being limited to Thunderbolt and HDMI inputs and not the DisplayPort. I'd also like to see more remote control support instead of the traditional button controls.

another "agreed". screw speakers in a screen. who wants that. they *always* suck. any $20 set sounds better.

But also agree it will be close to price of Studio Display. They prob *could* make it cheaper... but no need. Apple users are their target, and it just needs to be cheap enough to buy rather than apple. Classic business model. How the world works.

No speakers or microphone, though, unless I’m mistaken. It will be interesting to see how they’re priced.

Really? All of Samsung's "Smart Monitors" so far have had Bixiby/Alexa built in. Kind of hard to have either of those and not microphone so assistant can 'hear' or 'speakers' so assistant can talk. May not have a surround sound , Dobly audio built in but probably can listen and talk.
