Regarding Viewfinity: I do love having a 5K option in a 27" display. Everything else about it is good but not great. If it's priced comparably to Apple Studio Display, then I'll pass; I wouldn't pay that much for a pro display without mini-LED, even if it has a lot of other good things going for it. Just my two cents -- I'm sure it'll be a good fit for some folks.

Hopefully Apple will release a 27" mini-LED Studio Display "Pro" soon, and/or some new incarnation of the Pro Display XDR. The rumors were that the Studio Display pricing is the way it is because of the missing 27" mini-LED version (which, knowing Apple, will be >>$2K), or it could just be Apple being Apple. mini-LED really should be table stakes for the >$1K segment in 2023.

Good, we need more 5K options and competition. I’m hoping to see 6K and 8K in the near future too in QD-OLED with 120Hz would be great. I think they can drop Tizen as it's not great.

I do wish manufacturers settled on a magnetic webcam attachment no power cable required (maybe an optional dock with a camera screw and USB C for those who need it for their specific setup) that can do face unlock. Waiting years for FaceID on the Mac but Apple doesn't seem to be interested.

****ing hell. I just bought the Apple Studio Display and now Samsung comes out with their own.

I'm happy for you guys now that Samsung makes a display, which will probably be cheaper.

I've had one and it was quite alright, indeed. (Though I could never found a 100% reliable Thunderbolt dock to match it with.)

Unfortunately, it seems LG completely stopped distributing it in Europe.
Yeah, I think it's an older model. I don't think there will "ever" be a 24" display again. I think this model was maybe before the 27" 4K form factor became the commodity monitor. It no longer makes economical sense for vendors to make anything different, IMO.

A little bit OT but still...
I'm currently using a BENQ 35" Ultra wide monitor. I love the wide factor, and I don't want to trade it for two smaller monitors. However, I also love the Retina resolution...
Question: Is there a Retina Utra wide monitor available? 🤔

I really wonder why the article writers at Macrumors are doing everything they can to keep people from buying Apple products if possible. This has not been education for a long time, but rather a mood mongering. If I find Apple too expensive, I'm not interested in Apple, and certainly not in rumors about what Apple is planning, because then I would be happy with Android or Microsoft. Where is the sense behind that? Personally, it annoys me. When I was young, stinginess was cool for me, too, but in the meantime I've developed a different understanding of value, and it repulses me when people basically find Apple too expensive. Why do these people spread themselves out here, why is it more about clicks than about offering friends of Apple an information page about Apple's ideas? In the meantime, I'm quite often on websites that are dedicated to this topic. And learn a lot there.

If I'm looking for a non-Apple monitor, I know a better tipster: Google.
And there are specialist forums on this subject as well.

It looks very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the specs for the inputs and what the mounting options look like. Depending on what they support in terms of DP versions, might not even need DSC when connecting a PC and we might even see G-Sync, etc. I expect a list price that comes in less than the ASD but still on the high side (maybe $1200-$1300) but gives a lot of room for retailers and Samsung themselves to discount. I’ve bought several Samsung TVs over the years and all were well under list even directly from Samsung.
An apple studio display refurbished isn’t far from that… but true that during discounted and special events periods could be sold at quite the deal.

I would love to get a Mac mini (Mn Pro SoC, please...) and Apple display, but I have a problem with paying more for the display than the computer...

As for the ASD, I would gladly pay the current price if a few changes were made...

Make the stand like the Pro XDR stand, height-adjustable & landscape/portrait rotation abilities, and dual inputs with a split screen ability, so one could hook up both a Mac and an iPad (Pro) at the same time...

Maybe that last feature would be better with a 32" 6K display...?

Samsung has announced several upcoming additions to its monitor lineup, and perhaps the most interesting model for Apple users is the ViewFinity S9, Samsung's first 27-inch 5K display that will compete against Apple's Studio Display.

samsung-viewfinity-s9.jpg

27-inch 5K displays remain fairly rare, but Apple has long embraced the higher pixel density for its ability to display true Retina-quality content at reasonable size. Just like the Studio Display and Apple's former 27-inch iMac, Samsung's ViewFinity S9 will feature a 5120 x 2880 display, and its wide color gamut will cover 99% of the DCI-P3 spectrum while HDR600 support improves shadows and highlights.

samsung-viewfinity-s9-portrait.jpg

The ViewFinity S9 features a matte finish to minimize glare, is equipped with USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, and includes a 4K SlimFit camera.

This has a stand that the Apple Studio Display should have had from the beginning, what with the rotate to portrait ability...

At last... someone finally making a 27"/5K display.

LG Electronics - "Do I mean nothing to you...?" ;^p

Very good. Now make a nice 22" or 24" 4K please.

For (around) 218ppi one would need a 20" panel, for 24" one would want a 4.5K panel like in the current 24" iMac...

If it has HDMI ports I may just consider selling my Studio Display. Sometimes I do feel limited with only being able to connect it to a Mac. I've been spoiled with 5K and I can't live without it. Once you go 5K you can never go back!

Per samsung news
Users can connect cameras and other devices to the monitor through USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 connections to easily transfer gigantic files of high-resolution video or other large data sets from storage devices to their PC. The ViewFinity S9 Series comes with a 4K SlimFit camera and supports native video conferencing through apps such as Google Meet that are included in the Samsung Smart Hub.
The verge's article described this as
The ViewFinity S9 will support a wide mix of I/O including HDMI, Thunderbolt 4, USB-C, and DisplayPort. It can charge laptops at up to 96 watts.
So maybe not HDMI ports but with an adapter for HDMI or Display port using Thunderbolt 4 ports?

It's good to read about competition. You don't want MacRumors to be a pure Apple propaganda machine.

HDMI input is the thing that's going to push me to get the Samsung instead of the ASD.

I've been disappointed with nearly every single Samsung thing I've owned but being able to have a 5k display I can plug a Switch into as well is enough of a differentiator for me to overlook that.

According to dpreview it has HDMI and displayport inputs, though doesn’t say which versions, as well as Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C with 96w power delivery. The only other thing of note is the case is metal, so they really are targeting the studio display. No doubt there will be more details once CES kicks off on Thursday.

Surprised to see all the positive comments about this 5K display.

Based on the standards set here earlier last year, if it isn't 5K MiniLED ProMotion 120Hz for just $999 it's garbage 8 year old display tech that shouldn't even be sold. Glad there's competition in the space as well though. 5K > 4K.

For Ultrawides, 163 PPI is currently the highest you can get which is the equivalent of a 27" 4K monitor. Those monitors are:
- LG 34WK95-U
- LG 34BK95-U
- MSI PS341WU

All three are 34" 5120x2160 flat ultrawides. The sharpest curved monitor is going be a 40" 5120x2160 monitor and there are a couple of options out there with the LG 40WP95C-W 40 being the most popular.

Right now they haven't mentioned the display quality. Guessing it's a 500 nit model, the smart hub can apparently run some of the more common sVoD apps on it. Cost is another factor that swing opinions the opposite direction if priced close to Apple's.

What's not mentioned in this MR article but is mentioned in the DP Review article is it's an IPS display. This comes as a relief since my experience with Samsung monitors has always been horrible TN display technology with its color and contrast shifting depending on viewing angle.

The report says it will be matte display. I know that costs more on ASD, but honestly I prefer the gloss.

Do other folks care about that?

That's important (more so than HDR support to me) - I like the 600 nits on the ASD. 500 is probably plenty, but 600 is noticeably brighter. I enjoy the full brightness when I watch videos on the ASD.

Visa mount gets me as a customer. It is ridiculous that Apple does not provide standard mounting for the price that they charge.
Lots of Samsung displays, including the M8 if I recall correctly, don’t have VESA mounting points at all. Apple’s Studio Display _does_ at least have a VESA option (which I am currently using).

No matter what specs they offer, I just do not have any trust for Samsung. Poor quality. I once had a top spec Samsung laptop. Never again any Samsung product in my life
You missed it he article last week on the class action judgement against apple for their faulty keyboard I guess.
