Nice! Promising 5K option. We need this. I love the ASD, but it's overpriced and we all know that. I sucked it up and I don't regret it. Height adjustable seems really nice. I hope the price comes in well below ASD and gives people an option.

Nice, looks interesting, but why can no other vendors create a uniform bezel with no obnoxious protrusions of odd-sized edging on one side? At a glance, it looked like a good competitor, and then you see the protruding camera or odd-sized bezel, which just doesn't "fit" any aesthetic, especially if you opt to rotate to portrait layout.

Another thought: hopefully Samsung figures out a software solution for adjusting brightness, etc.. One nice thing about the ASD is controlling everything thru the Mac UI. I'm guessing some people would prefer buttons or whatnot but not me. I tweak the brightness on my monitors many times a day as the lighting in my room shifts.

The copycat design is ruined with the camera sticking out the top like we using webcam in 1999.
Well, the Apple design expects you to prop up your iPhone using some plastic to get a decent pictures. So I'd take it … ;)

But seriously. I haven't regretted my Studio Display for a minute, because it just ended all Thunderbolt dock weirdness and is just super pleasant. But the webcam is just an embarrassment. Good on Samsung for doubling down on quality over design here (I assume). Apple needs competition to bring it's A game.

The odd-sized protrusion on the bottom likely has something to do with the buil-in color calibration system (and some other features). Probably just as many folks would be 'annoyed' with the lack of a color calibration system as are 'annoyed' with protrusions. The protrusion does something. So does the camera (i.e., neatly goes away if don't need it in a hooded set up).

The camera is removable. Users traumatized by it, can simply take it off. Good luck removing a 'notch' that has carved out pixels because the camera 'had to be' integrated. If Samsung wanted to do incrementally more engineering could also have an second mount point for the deatchable camera so that could be placed on top in portrait mode (if that the 90% time orientation). That would make more sense then a camera stuck off to the side half way up the screen.

I for one like a softer webcam image that makes me look younger thank you 😛😂

LG has an older model 24" 4k display. The text is very sharp, the closest you can currently get to an Apple retina display. I have 2 of them on my Mac Studio. The bezels are the bulkier older style. Here is the model number, it's $280 currently on Amazon.

LG 24UD58-B

I've had one and it was quite alright, indeed. (Though I could never found a 100% reliable Thunderbolt dock to match it with.)

Unfortunately, it seems LG completely stopped distributing it in Europe.

These do look nice. But I would have to try one first as we have the Smart Monitor M7 43 inch and the OS is very laggy which puts me off a little.

From a sample size of one, I only had bad experiences with Samsung monitors and wouldn't recommend them. But aside from their build quality and reliability. Why do we act as if the LG UltraFine 5K no longer exists?

... perhaps the most interesting model for Apple users is the ViewFinity S9, Samsung's first 27-inch 5K display that will compete against Apple's Studio Display.

27-inch 5K displays remain fairly rare, but Apple has long embraced the higher pixel density for its ability to display true Retina-quality content at reasonable size. Just like the Studio Display and Apple's former 27-inch iMac, Samsung's ViewFinity S9 will feature a 5120 x 2880 display, and its wide color gamut will cover 99% of the DCI-P3 spectrum while HDR600 support improves shadows and highlights.

The ViewFinity S9 features a matte finish to minimize glare, is equipped with USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, and includes a 4K SlimFit camera.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but it will be launching "early" this year.
I hope the ViewFinity S9 will come at a reasonable price and cased in something other than plastic (say, maybe aluminium). It would be great if they had a glossy option rather than just the matte, but I guess we can't have all the nice things.

Can't wait to see the reviews. If they stick a Samsung smartphone in it I'm going to be very disappointed. I really don't want to be updating the firmware in my display every couple of weeks, just to get the webcam to do a halfway ****** job of actually working.

Hopefully the stand if free and the display also allows for VESA mounting to an arm.

Probably because they were hard to come by not too long ago, that and Apple purposely removing it from the store like they do anything that competes with their products. The Apple Store still shows only the LG Ultra Fine 4k display at this time. I think they have ceased production if going by LG web page versus availability. Still some limited availability as seen online.

As someone who's been on the fence about the steep price of the 27" Studio display, I wasn't considering the LG Ultrafine 5K for these reasons:
  • It's only ~12% cheaper
  • Ugly/big bezels
  • Cheap looking plastic vs the aluminum enclosure on the Studio Display
  • Lower max brightness vs Studio Display

With theses specs I doubt it will be much cheaper than Studio Display and will certainly have way worse build quality and bad sounding speakers. My only hope is a more reasonable pricing outside of the US.

  • Even cheaper looking plastic on the Samsung
  • No word on the brightness of the Samsung

It's great there's finally another alternative for a 5K monitor. I do have concern about the Tizen OS integration and whether there's going to be ads and tracking.

A lot of people are complaining about big bezels. Did you know that its much harder to control backlight blooming with narrow bezels, so you get worse uniformity across the panel?

I'd rather have the chunky bezels and a uniform backlight.

btw, the ASD effectively has chunky bezels, they're just hidden by the flat front.

I'm currently running a 24 inch 4K non-Apple monitor (posted elsewhere in MR). The bezels are worse than LG Ultrafine - but the uniformity is better than the vast majority of monitors.

That 57” ultrawide model must be ginourmeous. At least the resolution is freaking awesome. But I must ask, who uses those, for what purpose? I can only imagine niche situations where it is convenient to have multiple documents or browser windows open in order to compare things.

I would love an ultrawide with 2k vertical resolution, but 57” is WAY too big. 34-40” thank you.

I have a 40" ultra wide that's 5k x 2k, so the 57" essentially grafts another +/- 8" width of pixels to each end of the screen to get to the 78xx x 2k resolution. Not to mention presumably much better contrast than the LG I'm using.

Honestly I'd love this. I use a 3 column workflow and could definitely make use of a 4th (or 2 narrow ones at each edge to use with chat apps and the like.
