I think it is to small. If it's for reading books/newspapers, using them as textbooks in school etc...

Great smartphone though + great for businesspeople

What's up with all the fanboy crap

I like apple as much as the next guy, but this Dell Slate is pretty damn sexy. 5MP camera too, sounds like an awesome phone for guys with big pockets. And it's going to run android. It looks like it's already running circles around the iPhone 3GS

It's beautiful, sleak, slim. 5 inches is a great size for a phone, it's going to be wonderful for browsing the web on the go.

If you look at the Dell Slate is a smartPHONE (it has a freaking dialer) and not as a tablet then I don't see what the problem is.

So my question for all the people saying Dell is pathetic, tell me, what is wrong with this Dell product?
It isn't ugly, it isn't bulky, it's large for a phone, but it certainly isn't bulky, and it can fit in a pocket. It has a beautiful screen, and a 5MP camera.

When did any table like device automatically become a slate?
All the rumors about apple using that term and now everything is a slate.
Funny how this will work. Every company out there will have a device that the media refers to as a slate and then apple will roll in and announce the iSlate and suddenly everyone else now has an iSlate "like" device which immediately makes them the device to compare to. If someone at Apple isn't responsible for this brilliant strategy then we have all been unknowingly trained to play right into their game. This is all going to be so much fun to watch unfold over the next 3 weeks.

5" tablet--epic fail. The big problem: it's too small for readability and comfortable touchscreen operation.

If the Dell tablet computer used a 7" display, it would be different story altogether--readability would be much improved, and there is enough screen space for decent touchscreen operation.

I agree with you. From the small bit of information we know about it, it seems like a aesthetically pleasing, interesting device.

Actually, come to think of it this could be exactly the phone I'm looking for.

No, it's not.

Companies make profit to succeed.

The fact that the iPhone is relatively behind on features is evidence of the fact that profit rules all.

You are an ignorant idealist, and you are still assuming that I'm taking Apple's side on this.

I love my iPhone, but I really wish Apple would get off their high-horse and give it some of the basic features other phones have.

But Apple doesn't care, because they are making money.

And mark my words -- Apple will fall, or Apple will fall from grace. Guaranteed.

[Edit] Just to re-iterate, I'm a Mac user, I'm an iPhone user -- and I definitely think there is room for improvement. I just think part of Apple's strategy (right now) is sticking to things they are confident in, rather than taking risks.. and that's why their progress is starting to fall behind. Their BRAND POWER is keeping their profits high.

I'm quoting this because it's basically how I feel!! :D

I'm sure if Apple came out with 5 inch device like Dell's, people will praise it. I love Apple as much as the next person, but the fanboys on this forum are disgusting.

Why do we have Palm and Dell news on the front page?

In part because it sells lots of ads. No doubt there will be no shortage of ridiculous claims of how Palm and Dell are dead and much chest besting about how the iPhone and Slate are infinitely better than anything Palm or Dell could ever dream of much less ship. (i.e., a slew of hyperbole and then an equal number of posts dispelling it. )

In part being informed about related products can help separate signal from noise on Apple product rumors too.

FYI, this is a mac rumors forum. Ya think their might be a few fan boys here?

Coming on here and complaining about it is like going on a Christian forum and complaining that everyone is into Jesus.

You're god damn right I'm a fan boy. I'm glad Apple allows me to pay such a little amount of money for their amazing products. I felt guilty only paying $600 for my first iPhone. Something that incredible is worth a lot more than $600 bucks to a fan boy like me.

Exactly!

It's not a real product at this time.

Let's see
No specs
No price
No release date

Definitely pathetic.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

It's getting a little weird in here, guys. I think we all need to take a deep breathe.

So it's exactly the same as the Apple tablet but with a photograph?

no no no, believe me, if it had an Apple logo, Consultant would be ALL over it, saying how it is the revolution of the tablet/touch devices.

So Palm has done a good ob of trying to catch up with the iPhone. Unfortunately, Apple is still ahead in my estimation and are no doubt hard at work on the next iPhone iteration. Guess they will stay ahead for now.

Being a Pre owner and an iPod touch owner I disagree. WebOS is better than the iPhone OS, no about about it. Apple "wins" by virtue of their 3rd party developer support, and that's about it.

I still would rather Apple give me a smaller MacPro. All I really need is a Mac Mini on steroids, or a smaller MacPro to do my workload. Just one AGP slot, and one PCI slot will make me happy. Space for a single HD, easy access to RAM, and a SATA port.

When this MBP goes, I will likely get a Netbook and VPN into my home machine. My phone will get upgraded when a new Android phone with a Cybershot camera as a feature is available.

That's it. I don't need a tablet. I am not speaking-to-text what I want to write. I am typing, on a real keyboard. I am not gesturing EVERYTHING and buying eMagazines and eBooks. I am already tired at looking at glowing screens everyday, and enjoy my break to a physical material.

The tablet segment is so niche, and the concept so annoying, that I hope Apple includes EVERY requested feature so I never have to hear about it again. I hope it's the device of the millennium, solves AIDS through it's innovative multi-touch grope-me-display and wins Sexiest Man/Woman of the year to be displayed on the front cover of an eMag devoted to celebrities.

Then maybe Apple, who apparently has spent YEARS perfecting this tablet to rival the introduction of the Ten Commandments, can get back to making computers that work, not novelties.

I really don't get this.

Tablet PC's, in general, have been around for YEARS. Years and years...I've seen some very thin ones sold for artists as well, several years ago.

Why are people acting like these, Apple's or anyone else's, are NEW? It's mind boggling.

And the final question is...what exactly are we using these for?

+1 here. Well done! I'm with you on this one.

Who actually needs a tablet already got one since they are on the market since years now.

Now what? Is Apple going to teach me how to to read my news(papers)?
Is my laptop/netbook not good enough for displaying news/webpages playing music and stuff?
Is my news-PAPER not good enough anymore?
Cr@p!
