I use my iPod touch 5gen 24/7... iOS 10 isn't available;
if anyone wants to dump their 6gen off on me, lemme know lol... (64GB & up tho)
iOS stopped at 9.3.5 for mine, which kinda stinks...
There haven't been any updates to Touch in FOREVER.
It would be cool to have a few spare ones around, since i use mine all the time.

How is your experience with your iPod touch 5? I had one but for me iOS 9.3.5 really slowed it down to the point I upgraded to the 6 gen. I then eventually sold my gen 6 as I ran through the battery too quick. I just wonder if my 5 gen was just bad for me.

Its fine; it does slow when multitasking;
i use mine to mainly listen to podcasts & music, since i work nights by myself at the hospital, so i dont need my phone;
my dog broke my ipod 4, & best buy had a trade-in deal for $100 off gen5s when the gen6 came out;
my main worry is iOS is no longer supported though.

Good to know. If iPod Touch is no longer going to be updated, I may get an iPad mini instead.

Hurry up... the chat is the iPad mini is going away too... which would be sad as no matter how much power the bigger iPad has, sometimes it is great to have the smaller iPad to throw in a bag or read in a cramped environment.

It's too bad really. A modest refresh with an A9 (even if underclocked a little) and making 32 GB the base option would make this a decent little device again. Apple doesn't appear to be that interested in doing much with iPod lineup though...
Wouldn't they have to do a redesign? The A9 would be too much for the iPod's battery... or is it more efficient?

I think the A9 is slightly more efficient than the A8 since the 6s has a slightly smaller battery than the 6 yet performs similar or slightly better in battery tests. That said they had to underclock the A8 to put in the iPod touch yet still most of the complaints about the 6th gen iPod are about how awful the battery life is so a switch to an A9 without some other changes will still probably mean a device with terrible battery life...

If they would release one with the size of the iPhone 6 with a better battery and camera plus a bump up in storage I would totally buy one again. As I get older I like the bigger screen but I know I am not the key demographic for an iPod touch anymore.

I am actually planning to buy a 128 GB iPod touch to use in the vehicles since they can control an iPod directly. I would really only need an iPod nano, but they are limited to 16 GB. I prefer not to use streaming with my Samsung S7 Edge plus I have apps and photos on it that limit the amount of music I can have on it.

If Apple would update the IPod Touch, it would be closer to the time they will stop supporting the A8. Right now, the A8 is still around in the Apple TV and the upcoming HomePod. So I don't see Apple being interested in updating the iPod Touch just because.

It is going to be interesting in how fast Apple would stop supporting he 64 bit chips (starting with the A7). Will they get the boot next year? If so, hen maybe we can expect some update next year. That is assuming Apple will even keep the line going.

Rather than the iPod Touch, I wish Apple can update the nano or shuffle. Those who wants a Touch can move to the iPhone SE, but those wanting a small dedicated music player are stuck with the low capacity and old nano and shuffle.

Who knows. Maybe we will see an evolution of the iPod line with the Sx chip (that they use on the Apple Watch). Maybe we will see a new iPod using the S1 or S2, being a small music player with wireless features and can get music from an iPhone or iPad.

All in all, the iPod line is no longer generating the revenue for Apple to make it worth their time to focus on.

I'm still surprised they never turned the iPod touch into an iPhone by adding a cellular modem. I would love one and would pay a LOT for it. I'm always trying to lighten the load.

The SE is double thickness and double weight. Someday smaller phones will be trendy again, just like the pickup truck fad is finally over.
True. Phones were big and then people wanted smaller resulting in flip phones. Now they are getting big again and bordering on huge.

I don't think it's going to happen. Sales are low and have been for some time. Smart phones fulfil everyone's music / gaming 'on the go' needs. The iPhone SE, or a refurbished / used smartphone covers the low-cost end of the market. There is nothing an iPod touch does that a low-cost smartphone can't.

I can see an argument for keeping the shuffle, though. With iPhones now being so large, I can see a market for a small, lightweight music player, especially for the fitness crowd. If your phone is a plus-size, you may not want to take it on your run with you.

I do not think there will be any updates, but I did just order an iPod Touch 6 for its smaller size and for a dedicated music device for the car.

My reason for wanting to go with a touch is to use Apple Music at the gym. I would prefer to use a touch than my iPhone.

I think we *might* see a new iPod Touch in the future.

Why?

In the latest user guide for iPod Touch it says the following:

Hey Siri. You can use Siri without pressing the Home button. Just say “Hey Siri,” then make your request. (For some models, Hey Siri is only recognized when iPod touch is connected to a power source.)
That looks promising. The iPad mini looks to be at the same stage as the iPod Touch now so either one being updated might signal more for the other. It would be cool to see another Touch but the SE is like a (more expensive) 7th gen considering the lower pricing vs flagship iPhones

My guess is that with the new push into AR, Apple may be looking to update the iPod Touch in October with:
a) A9 SOC, like the ipad mini and the cheap iPad 9.7"
b) 32gb minimum
c) better cameras (like they did with iPad Pro)
d) bluetooth 4.2 and better wifi
e) larger battery

Keep in mind the App Store just put a lot of focus into GAMES with a separate section.

That would make the iPod Touch an ideal AR companion, a great "camera" for Instagram/Snapchat, to go along with its other two traditional uses: Game playing and Music listening. And don't forget it could be used with SIRI...

I just bought one at my local Apple Store and it still had iOS 8.4.

These aren't flying off the shelves.

Chances of it happening imo are extremely low. I would love to see an upgraded version with a 4.7" screen and a touch ID, but I know that will most likely never happen.
