No. iPod touch is almost dead. You can get an iPhone SE for the same price or less. If Apple no longer interested in updating iPad mini, they will never update iPod touch. But it doesn't mean that Apple will discontinue it. They might bump up the storage and reduce its price. They brought iPod touch 6 only because the 5th generation could not support iOS 10. iPod touch 6 is a pretty decent device for its size. You really think there will be any noticeable difference if Apple puts A9 or A10 cheap in it? Actually there will be-even worse battery life.

Not really, $200 =/ $400, and what if you don't want a phone plan? You have to go out of your way to get an SE for cheap.

I don't think Apple should release another iPod touch in the 5th gen form factor. Not enough room for battery, and features like Touch ID/3D Touch should be added.

You can buy an iPhone SE without the need for a phone plan. And you DON'T have to go out of your way to get one cheap... unless going to www.boostmobile.com is out of the way. ;)

$160 brand new, no contract, no payment plan, no strings.

I'm still surprised they never turned the iPod touch into an iPhone by adding a cellular modem. I would love one and would pay a LOT for it. I'm always trying to lighten the load.
OH COOL IDEA

In September?
Mac mini updates might be intro'd then.... may new iPod too...?

cool story bro.

I'm a long time iPod touch user. What is the iPod touch? It's a 4 inch iPad. It's an iPhone without cellular, a wifi only iPhone. That's how I use it, as a small internet device, an email and texting device, and of course, great music listening. No data charge here.

I was at the post office the other day and I saw that the employee was using the IPod touch as an official post office device. And I remember reading that the Post office bought a ton of iPod Touches. I think some big retailers also use IPod touches for inventory and such.

So if the post office and big retailers have large scale uses for the iPod touch, it could keep it alive for...a 7th generation.

I love my 6th generation iPod touch, and for those that want a handheld wifi only device within the virus free iOS ecosystem. Let's keep it going.

I really hate this - having my two most-used devices on death row. My iPod Touch puts me to sleep every night (I use a CPAP machine and the sound makes it hard to fall asleep). The best podcast companions - like the guys at The Accidental Tech Podcast - inform and entertain me until I drift off. My iPad Mini has magazines and books I'm reading - not to mention the MLB at Bat app and the NBCSports app that broadcasts my local baseball team's games. It's invaluable and in constant use, loaded with useful tools. My Mac Pro 1,1 was sidelined many many years ago, and the Mac Mini I finally got so I could run the latest macOS and programs is already old by most standards - and seems to have an uncertain future. It's as if Apple wants to sell nothing but iPhones and iMacs and not much for me.

The iPod Touch 6 I bought a month ago on sale will last me a long time. I use it in the car, taking it out when I am not in the car.

As far as the IpT6 went, IIRC, it was a MR user who said he quoted Apple saying if someone's going to steal sales from them, they'd rather it be from themselves. I'm still not sure if Apple feels this way today as when the IpT6 came out. AFAIK, they have the resources to divert to further continuing supporting the IpT6, and getting an IpT7 out the door.

I use my iPod touch 5gen 24/7... iOS 10 isn't available;
if anyone wants to dump their 6gen off on me, lemme know lol... (64GB & up tho)
iOS stopped at 9.3.5 for mine, which kinda stinks...
There haven't been any updates to Touch in FOREVER.
It would be cool to have a few spare ones around, since i use mine all the time.
My IpT5 is STILL on ios7. I guess I could've updated it to ios9.3.5, but I didn't want to risk slow downs and performance hits. It's running almost 4 years now, but I stopped doing heavy gaming on it as of 4 months ago. Otherwise, Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time was the biggest battery suck during my "heavy gaming" days. It now requires ios8 or higher, and they changed the system so that you can now level up plants (which is a huge grind), so good riddance. Without that, I can perhaps enough battery to continue the rest of the backlog I have on that device.

When that dies, I'm either going to do iOS gaming exclusively on my Ipad Air (1), or see if I can get an Iphone 6/+ for cheap, as if there's going to be an IpT7, I doubt it'll have a 4.7"+ screen, and for me, 4" doesn't cut it anymore.

So with the HomePod coming in December, apple has reduced the iPod lineup to:

iPod Touch
32GB $199
128GB $299

iPod nano and shuffle discontinued.

No, there will be no further updates to the iPod touch, as pointed out, can find deals on iPhones without cell plan, does the same as iPod touch. Perhaps iPod touch will sell in this lineup until sometime in 2018, but, not beyond that (EOL for all iPods).

You can now find refurbished iPod touch for as low as $129 (5th gen.) or
$149 for 6th gen. https://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod

Oddly, no iPod nano refurbs. It's until retailers sell out of nano & shuffle.

Maybe. But don't forget the iPod touch 6 came out in 2015 after they hadn't updated it since 2012. It hasn't been that long yet.

Also the SE doesn't meet the same use case. For example a company can't buy SEs in bulk for the same cheap price.

Companies can contact their Apple rep to work out a bulk order arrangement. You are free to believe that or not. #shrug
That's what I'm referring to. A bulk order of iPods would be cheaper since they use cheaper parts. No?

But, it will be 3 years next year. They put the A8 chip in it, which was a surprise to me, but, that's so it would be the last update to the Touch, to last 3, maybe 4 years (it is 64-bit). Whenever they stop making the A8 chip for other products (iPad Mini 4, ATV4), they will discontinue the Touch. I guarantee it will not be updated again. There's a slight chance they will drop the 32GB model late next year, sell only the 128GB model for a bit, but, even that's not likely, unless they plan to keep making it into 2019.

The iPhone 6 has the A8 in it, and Apple no longer sells it.

You can find deals on the iPhone SE, and iPhone 6 online. The SE has the A9 chip, so it's a step up, while the 6, of course, has the bigger screen, either can be better deals than the iPod Touch.

not necessarily, simply because they do not make as many of them as they do iPhones.

Well I don't know for sure but it's possible. Many were saying the same with the 5th gen. Though the SE's existence is definitely something to consider.

not necessarily, simply because they do not make as many of them as they do iPhones.
This is a good point. Though I doubt Apple would be eager to do such a thing unless they want the iPod touch gone/iPhone more widespread. Related to that, I think @sracer misunderstood my post, what I meant was that the iPod touch is probably sold by Apple in bulk for a lower price than the SE is. However, I can't find any articles about either device being purchased in bulk or the prices of doing so. I'm going to have to concede here since what you guys are saying could easily be true. ;)

I can't find any definite info, but it's looking like they made no technological changes to the iPT, and the only change is storage size? Can someone confirm/deny this? I have the latest generation 64GB, so there is really no reason for me to give this a look. I'm also getting a strange feeling that the iPT and generally the whole iPod category is going away. Feels like 2019 or 2020 will be the last year. RIP. It served a purpose. I know this sounds crazy, but I don't see a cheaper/older model of the iPhone as a good substitute - fwiw, I do like the iPT form factor better - thinner, lighter, more easy to slip into your pocket. I realize the differences aren't great, but hey, to me it does make a difference. I suppose when my current iPod croaks, I'll have to spring for an iPhone... such is life. Oh well.

All they did was discontinue the 16GB and 64GB models and replace them with the existing 32GB and 128GB at their lower price points.
