... I know this sounds crazy, but I don't see a cheaper/older model of the iPhone as a good substitute - fwiw, I do like the iPT form factor better - thinner, lighter, more easy to slip into your pocket. I realize the differences aren't great, but hey, to me it does make a difference. I suppose when my current iPod croaks, I'll have to spring for an iPhone... such is life. Oh well.
Agreed. For me, it"s a shirt pocket ipad nano, with great lines. But I shall never buy a smartphone to replace it. If the iPt and ipad mini become unavailable, I shall reluctantly look at android 8" tabs.

You can buy an iPhone SE without the need for a phone plan. And you DON'T have to go out of your way to get one cheap... unless going to www.boostmobile.com is out of the way. ;)

$160 brand new, no contract, no payment plan, no strings.

So if intend to use it w/o service, once I purchase the phone, there's no more interaction with Boost, right? The included SIM is good to activate the phone?

One big note about that Boost promotion - most of the "discount" is in the form of a bill credit, not a cash discount. It just makes their phone service cheap/free for a couple months, it doesn't make less money leave your wallet for the device itself.

If you have no plans on using Boost cell service, it's not really saving you much.

Edit: Uh.... Never mind... Most of their sales are in the form of bill credits, but it appears the iPhone SE is actually a $240 off sale... Strange.

Further edit: Looking around, $160 seems to be a common sale price at many of the smaller / virtual carriers.

Doubt it. They just killed off their iPod nano and shuffle lines and they're trying to kill iPod forever soon I bet

Not discontinuing the iPod Touch at this time makes it much more likely that Apple is going to continue offering it. An update is likely. The iPhone does not replace the iPod Touch no matter the price. The iPod Touch is more closely a part of the iPad line than the iPhone line but it is also a gateway device to the iPhone eco system.

I agree, if they were done with the touch, they'd have discontinued it alongside the other two. Realistically as long as all they need to do is drop in a new chip very 3 years and update the storage tiers accordingly, there's no reason not to keep making that 100M or so revenue off the line and giving those who want it the option of buying one.

Yes I agree too, it doesn't need to have iPhone like sales for Apple to keep it around. The A8 continues to be good enough for an entry level device and once it's not they'll probably do another quick upgrade with a newer chip and keep it around for a few more years.

Bigger screen would be nice, along with a better battery. Make it more of an all around device, for videos and gaming, and WiFi internet.

Might not be the latest thing, in fact in all likelihood it wouldn't, but I'd probably buy one. :)

Yes but all rumours say the mini will be gone after September 12th - so that just leaves the smallest iPad 9.7".

A new iPad Mini may not come, but I very much doubt that it is going to vanish from the product line in a couple of weeks. I'm sure that it's still generating more money for Apple than any iPod has in years, and look how long they've lingered.

That's what all the late 2010-2012 cMP users keep saying. So yes, the iPod Touch is at the end of it's road.

They already have an iPad Mini.
The mini is not a hold in one hand portable that you can fit in your pocket. If they updated the iPod Touch to the 4.7" iPhone size it would be a nice upgrade. Throw in longer battery life if you can, because it would be more suited for videos and gaming, and it would be a nice little device.

If they upgrade to a 4.7" size, you might as well be carrying around another iPhone.

I like the current size and thinness because I can carry one in my pocket and not even feel like it's there.

There are references to Face ID for the iPad and iPod touch in iOS 11 so you never know.
Interesting considering they hadn't even gotten around to adding Touch ID to the iPod line yet... maybe this is cheaper to include as it's just an infrared diode and updated front camera? Though I can't imagine the Touch ID sensor could really be all that expensive? Interesting to see - I'd guess next summer, 3 years after the release of the 6th gen might be the time, or perhaps they'll do it quietly alongside the new iPhone?

I’d buy a new iPod touch if the made the display 4.5 inches or larger, or a new iPad mini. Either one would work for me. I’d prefer a new mini though.

I was intrigued by that, but then I thought it was just placeholder text, because the iPod can recognize the Smart Battery Case and stuff so I didn't get my hopes up

My guess is that with the new push into AR, Apple may be looking to update the iPod Touch in October with:
a) A9 SOC, like the ipad mini and the cheap iPad 9.7"
b) 32gb minimum
c) better cameras (like they did with iPad Pro)
d) bluetooth 4.2 and better wifi
e) larger battery

Keep in mind the App Store just put a lot of focus into GAMES with a separate section.

That would make the iPod Touch an ideal AR companion, a great "camera" for Instagram/Snapchat, to go along with its other two traditional uses: Game playing and Music listening. And don't forget it could be used with SIRI...

Seems my guess was not too far off
