I personally like the added benefit of changing the .icns file so every size looks good - i.e., when notifications pop up with the 48x48 pix icons.

I replaced multiple .icns files with replacements/custom ones and nothing is changing.

What am I doing wrong?

thanx

Here is my icons on mavericks. Very iOS 7'ish. :D

'folder' icon location

Hey all!

Thanks to Mav i can no longer use CandyBar.
Now i've found the core folder containing all the original system icons yet i cant seem to find the 'folder' icon. Would anyone happen to know its exact name?

Thanks a bunch!

Most likely you just need to restart (not just log out). I discovered this when I changed them and it turns out that Liteicon will work as well if you restart rather than just log off and on.

Wasting yet more time making some more icons. On a related note, does anyone know why the icon reflection for my trash is different that the rest and how to fix it? Or remove the reflection from all the icons?

in the dock app package contents, there are icons for the trash shadows:
"trashemptyreflection.png" (or "@2x.png" on a retina mac); copy them somewhere (always!), then delete them from that folder, kill and reload the dock.

worked for me... :D

I had already done that. With those files intact I had the reflection of the trash basket.

Renaming those files gave me the proper reflection of my icon, it just starts at a different location on the dock from all the others. That's what I was asking about.

I stopped changing the icons for Chrome and Spotify. Those apps update so frequently so the icon gets set back to default every time, not worth the hassle lol

Hey so I think I'm a bit of a noob but I hope this helps. As mentioned in earlier posts, the method for changing the finder.app and trash icons in your dock is to replace to png's found in the resources folder of the package contents of the dock. Worked flawlessly for me and 4 of my close friends. Also, any of the other dock icons can be changed by simply opening up the "get info" option after revealing in finder and cmd-v pasting the new icon that you have searched for and desire on the old stock icon in the top left hand corner (obviously first you have to open your new desired icon in preview, then cmd-a to select, cmd-c to copy). In order to revert back to the original simply cmd-x cut the new icon and the old will reappear.

Now for inside the finder its a bit trickier. You will notice that the sidebar icons cannot be changed, even if you try the same tactics mentioned above (your newly pasted custom icon does indeed replace the original if your looking through your finder files in the finder window, but it doesnt show this change in the sidebar icons of the finder because of how the sidebar icons work--some script stuff i dont understand lol).

However, you can install "SideEffects" at http://macmatrix.blogspot.ca/p/sideeffects.html

SideEffects is a simple install-and-go script and has been updated to support mavericks. It will change your monochromatic sidebar icons to "colourful" icons. Some of these can be customized through the tactics mentioned above (ex. the Dropbox and Copy cloudfolders, and any of your personal folders). However the stock apple sidebar options (ex "documents", "movies", "downloads") can't be changed from their newly colourful form.

But don't despair, cause there is a simple work around (as you may have noticed). All you have to do is create a personal subfolder within the stock apple sidebar folders and customize the icon for that folder (ex instead of having the stock music sidebar icon, go to your itunes media folder and find the folder with all your music, customize that icon using the tactics above and then drag that folder to your sidebar...and remove the stock music folder from the sidebar). Just remember that if you do it for your downloads folder you have to change the location of your downloads (ex create a subfolder in downloads called "my downloads, and use this as the location of your downloads). The same goes for your pictures or movies or whatever you choose to replace.

I've included a screenshot to show some of this clearly. The second is to show that i got my finder icon to change using the first reply to this forum (replacing the 2 finder.pngs).

Hope this helps, figured i'd go into some detail since i was looking for this same answer not even a week ago.

Cheers all

Yes. When you click on "get info" drag the large icon to your desktop and make a folder with all the ones you change as a back up :)

Do you need to make backups of basic icon changes eg apps like iTunes etc?

If you follow the process to change the icon but hit delete when the icon is highlighted it reverts to the original..........I assume this happens for everyone?

the only icons i would recommend backing up are any icon pngs that you delete to change the finder or trash. If you are simply using the "get info" method, you do not need to backup any of the stock images. As you have noticed, deleting (or cutting) your newly applied icon image while trying to change the stock image will revert it back to the original (ex if i change the icon for a folder, and then subsequently cut or delete that icon in the get info top left hand corner then it will go back to the stock original image).

Can't find external USB device icon

Hello,
I want to change the external USB device icon from the white disk drive looking icon to a new flat one. I've looked in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources and a couple of other places, but just can't seem to find it.

Thanks in advance!

k so the way i did this was to plug in my USB (1.5TB external HDD) to my mac, look for it in finder, once you find it, right-click (option click) on your usb drive, get info, and paste your new icon over the original in the top left-hand corner. You can change this for each and every USB device you plug into your system that is recognized in finder.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks xspicer89x, but I'm looking for a more sophisticated option. I want to change the icon at the system level. I don't want to have to go into the Info of every device I plug into my Mac

Thanks

Oops - I really F-ed up!

Well I found where the drive icons were: /System/Library/Extensions/IOStorageFamily.kext/Contents/Resources.

I tried to change the Removable.icns icon by copying the icon I wanted into the info, but that didn't work. So I copied the file into the directory and renamed the old one. Then I plugged a USB key into the Mac to see if the new icon would show up. It didn't, in fact nothing showed up and I got the following message(s), they also appeared in the console logs:

10/31/2013 12:11:55.001 AM com.apple.kextd[12]: Can't load /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext - dependency authentication problems.

10/31/2013 12:11:55.012 AM com.apple.kextd[12]: Load com.apple.iokit.IOUSBMassStorageClass failed; removing personalities from kernel.

So i removed the new icon, renamed the old one, but my usb keys are still not showing up.

HELP!

Thanks!

:p guess my unsophisticated method is looking more and more attractive eh lol. but seriously, im glad to hear that your system is ok and not all bugged out. Hope you end up finding what youre looking for

Replacing the Finder icon is simple, now how do you create the reflection?

The same question applies to the trash.

So I wanted to change iTunes and Launchpad icons. I went to iTunes>Show package contents>resources and replaced with the icon I wanted, after I restarted my mbp all worked fine.
Then I tried do the same with launchpad, but it still has old icon instead the one I put in launchpads resource folder. So what could be the problem?

You icon file has to be the right size 128x128 for finder.png or 256x256 for finder@2x.png.

You can try clearing the dock icon cache by running this command in Terminal (admin password is required): sudo find /private/var/folders/ -name com.apple.dock.iconcache -exec rm {} \;

Then relaunch the dock.
