You icon file has to be the right size 128x128 for finder.png or 256x256 for finder@2x.png.
Ok. I'll try that. Perhaps mine are too big (512 and 1024)?

This is the way I do it, no terminal/3rd party app required...
1. Find the icon you want (preferably PNG)
2. Open it in preview, press CMD-A and CMD-C to copy it.
3. Find the app whose icon you want to change and highlight it.
4. Press CMD-I, and on the top left corner there should be the app's current icon. CMD-P to paste the new one.
5. Quit the app and reopen.
Is it possible to remove, customise or so this peace of dock which is like a table for apps?

That method has been working for me since at least OS 8.5, I think![]()

I used to use the above method with no issues what so ever, however since upgrading to mavericks the icons show up as standard .png or .jpeg icons. It is driving me crazy. See images below. Any advice on how to fix this?
(The images show what happens when I try to change an icon now... and the tutoring icon is there to show this is what used to happen... no problems. I can even transfer the old icons, however anything new just gives me those silly general icons![]()

I get this from time to time. Usually I fix it by either re-saving the image in Preview or in the Get Info window highlight the icon in the top left, hit delete, and re-paste.
Another thought: does the image thumbnail show the proper image or just the standard .png icon? If the problem is this, then just go to Get Info on that file (not on the app or folder you're trying to change) and hit delete on the top left icon. This should make the thumbnail appear. Then you can copy and paste it into the info window for your app or folder.
I had the same issue until I decided to try downloading icns instead of png and that fixed them

I usually create an image from a screenshot and then copy and paste the thumbnail generated, however I am getting no thumbnails at all? Even when I change the file to a .icns (see pic... I just get the standard .icns icon). Any other tips? Cheers
Ps. Thank you for offering your assistance.
If I then opened this image in preview, cmd-A to select, cmd-C to copy, and then went to the Get Info panel of the app or folder whose icon I want to change and highlighted the icon in the top left corner and cmd-V it worked.
Hi Designed4Mac (and others),
I use the method of Get Info and drag/dropping the icon over the icon for the app. After supplying my password the icon is changed in finder, however, the corresponding application in the dock retains it's original icon.
What am I doing wrong? Also, while I'm at it -- is there a return to default icon option?

For some reason adobe illustrator is reverting back to the original icon whenever I launch the app. It's the only one that does it. Strange. Other than that, my dock is looking sexy!
