Are you kidding me? There is no way Apple would have a premium phone in their line up for that much money. Apple has come too far in lowering prices to do this. I'd subscribe to the theory, if there is in fact an iPhone 5, that the iPhone 4s will replace the 4 going forward with the iPhone 5 being the flagship. That is, of course, if there is a 5.

The problem with the iPhone 5 is in mass manufacturing, hence the change in launch schedule. There is physically no way right now that Apple could manufacture 30 million iPhone 5's in one quarter. They're on track to announce that they have sold almost 25 million in the last quarter. They're going to need to sell well over 30 million in this quarter to keep their momentum. That is simply not possible with the iPhone 5. It IS possible with the iPhone 4 + iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5.

The price premium for the iPhone 5 has two causes: Higher ASPs (and profit), and to keep the masses of people on the iPhone 4S until manufacturing can ramp up for the iPhone 5.

Remember, on a 2-year contract, the difference between a $199 phone and a $399 phone is minimal. If a monthly bill is $100, over two years, an iPhone 4S would cost $2600. An iPhone 5 would cost $2800.

I understand what you are saying, but you need to remember the consumer target here and the profit margins per apple device. The iPad 2, for example, is priced at $499. There is no way an iPhone 5, IMO, would be price around that price range. It would deter too many consumers and would make android phones way more attractive. It would end up, price-per-price to be between the iPhone 4s vs whatever is out there. The iPhone 5 would be that supercharged premium device?

I just don't see it happening. Again, I personally think if there is going to be a 5, that the 4s would take the place of the 4. From a manufacturing standpoint, it would make sense to make the 4s the entry level phone. Perhaps there could be three versions? 8gb 4s for free or for a discounted price and then the 16 and 32. We'll have to wait and see either way.

Here's how the iPad would fit in:

iPhone 4 8Gb- free. Available Oct.

iPhone 4S 16Gb- $199. Available Oct.

iPhone 5 32Gb- $399. Available Nov.

iPad 2 16GB- $499

And yes, the iPhone 5 WILL be the supercharged premium device that Apple simply won't be able to make enough of. Like the iPad 2, stock outs will be common for the first 6 months, even with the premium pricing. I don't see a reason for Apple to leave money on the table.

Here's how it will go down. The most straightforward way for apple to increase ASPs in the next year is the following strategy. Higher revenue. Higher profit margins. The following prices are with a 2-year contract, of course.

iPhone 4 8Gb- free. Available Oct.

iPhone 4 16GB- $99. Available Oct.

iPhone 4S 16Gb- $199. Available Oct.

iPhone 4S 32Gb- $299. Available Oct.

iPhone 5 32Gb- $399. Available Nov. (stomp on Kindle Fire launch)

iPhone 5 64Gb- $499. Available Nov. (stomp on Kindle Fire launch)

Way too many releases, Apple would not do it this way.

Or perhaps, a 299.99 iP5 (32GB) and [the long awaited] (64GB) iP5 at 399.99. Im sure Apple will have something at the 299.99 price point. Also, why mention the iP5 as the Kindle Fire competition? One is a 7" tablet with a limited flavor of Android and wifi only...not a (rumored) ~4" Apple Flagship phone. Seems like a redesigned iPod touch (4") would be a better comparison.

Anyways...Im hoping the added footprint will allow for the extra NAND(64GB).

iphone 4s or 5

I need to update my aging 3gs......I just hope the next iPhone has the 'wi-fi's' and the 'bigger GB's'!

And face it, no matter what they release, you will love it and you will buy it.

if there is a redesigned iPhone and the design is awkward or the phone is too large I may just return it and pickup a used iPhone 4 or an iPhone 4s (assuming that is the N94) instead. Even a subtle test drop could feel awkward if they don't balance the weight right. Not going to spend $300 on something I don't love.

Are you guys seriously proposing that there is going to be a new iPhone 4 and an iPhone 4S? Hahah

No, No were not! Read more post less!

Some did make that statement, multiple times.

In your words. Read more, post less.

Or they were just using the '3GS' to get into sync with the generation number.

If an iPhone 4S is released, that rules out that theory.

... if you read what I posted, I stated why that WOULD BE THE CASE. Good God; some people are so stuck on their own point that they miss the overall subject that's being discussed.

Wow, talk about overreacting and rude.

And that's NOT what you said.

It's obvious that they don't name the phones after the body style, but rather the whole idea of something "new". The body style just comes with it.

Based on that statement, an A5 or upgraded camera or more memory would be something "new" and would warrant a bump in naming to iPhone 5.

Then you go on to give examples:

3GS -> better screen, better internals, better software. Are you going ot sell that with the same plastic/glass shell? Nope.

3G-> 3GS better internals. Are you going to design a whole new body and market it for only a spec bump? nope.

THe appearance is just as important (To apple) as what's inside the phone, but you cannot simply attribute the numbering to a design. There are many more factors to consider.

You said something "new" warranted a new model # yet the "new" internals on the 3GS didn't warrant a new model?

Let me recap:
Faster processor
Upgraded camera
7.2 Mbps HSDPA

These are only a few of the upgrades and yes, some of this was "new" hardware. So where do you draw the line?

If a new iPhone is released with upgraded internals, looking like the iPhone 4 and is named the iPhone 4S, it will be obvious at that point that Apple has adopted a naming convention that keeps the number the same when the body style remains the same and changes when there is a phyiscal redesign.

iPhone 5 64Gb- $499. Available Nov. (stomp on Kindle Fire launch)

At double the price? Ummm... I don't think so.

Besides the Kindle Fire is closer in competition to the iPad, don't understand why people keep comparing the 7" tablet to a 3.5" phone/media device.

There's been only 4 iphones, and the only complete redesign was the fourth iphone. So its kind of wishful thinking to believe the fifth iphone will be a redesign. In fact, I don't believe that the sixth iphone will be a redesign. Apple will lose out to other manufacturers for a while, but when they come up with the redesigned iphone, they will again be the leader. I personally hate the look of the iphone 4, but its a new design, and will not change for a while. Sorry for bringing the bad news.

Given what we think we know regarding
The assistant feature possibly the iPhone 4s means The iPhone 4/for Speech.....

To be fair, the second phone was a redesign.

The name 4S doesn't make any sense.

3GS was okay because 3G refers to the network.

4 refers to the fact it is the 4th iPhone.

This will be the 5th generation iPhone, and including 4 in the title doesn't make sense.

iPhone 4S is in iTunes beta 9. So that's definitely going to be released.
