Simple. The 4S is replacing the existing iPhone 4 alongside the 5. Both will have the A5 chip, the 4S will be 99$ with contract and the 5 will be $199.00 with contract.

It's obvious that they don't name the phones after the body style, but rather the whole idea of something "new". The body style just comes with it.

3GS -> better screen, better internals, better software. Are you going ot sell that with the same plastic/glass shell? Nope.

3G-> 3GS better internals. Are you going to design a whole new body and market it for only a spec bump? nope.

THe appearance is just as important (To apple) as what's inside the phone, but you cannot simply attribute the numbering to a design. There are many more factors to consider.

If the 4S is the same style, that's 2 precedents in favor of my theory.

I doubt ATT would be stocking cases for a redesigned i5 based on the magic of rumours. That, and the Photostream icon, are the 2 strongest pieces of evidence for a new device, IMHO.

I'm looking forward to being pleasantly satisfied with a 4" phone on Tuesday.

No you weren't. That's not sarcasm. You would have to actually believe his manager knows more than your DM for it to be sarcasm.

Don't try and backtrack.

Dude, I don't know the DM for my state!!! I was being an @$$HOLE like everyone else here!! Don't tell me who I know and I don't, you don't even know me!!

Bro,

I honestly wasn't trying to upset you, so chill. I also never said who you did or did know. No where did that happen. You seem to be a little uptight and might wanna take a break from the forums if you're gonna get this bent out of shape.

I simply made a joke about my DM, after you jumped on someone about what their manager said.

bottom line. chill. its da internetz ....... a place for lolz

so no iPhone 5 then? not good for apple

You'll have to wait until Tuesday to know for sure. NO ONE here really knows and if they do, they probably aren't saying. It's all guessing based on various rumors and peoples own imagination.

We'll all know in about 41 hours.

Tim Cook's first major product unveiling?

Almost all has been said about Apple releasing an iPhone 4 bump vs a brand new iPhone 5.

What is important to mention is that this is Tim Cook's first product unveiling since taking the reigns from Steve Jobs. Investors are already nervous about that transition and many are waiting to see what Apple will be like post-Jobs.

If Apple releases a lacklustre iPhone on Tuesday, investors are going to lose confidence in the company. Anything but a blockbuster lunch is going to be interpreted as "Apple has hit its peak, it's going to start rolling down from here" and the stock will feel it.

This is why I don't believe that we'll only see an iPhone4S released on Tuesday. Apple has been absolutely and intricantly methodical about this CEO transition. They're not going to mess up on the grand finale. The "Let's Talk" event is going to be the launch pad for Tim Cook and he will have to impress and Apple knows it.

iPhone 5. Tuesday, Oct 4.

I can understand them not redesigning the phone, but I cannot understand the name '4S' at all. But, it will sell well, like everything else with a bitten off apple on the back of it.

iPhone 4 then 4s, just like 3G then 3Gs. same phone with updated specs rather than a total redesign.

I'll buy whatever is announced on Tue

I have a beat up 3GS, will be happy to get my hands on something new. Although I held back from getting iPhone 4, it seems now I'm out of luck:(

If there is no iPhone redesign he'll likely talk about all the innovations of the new operating system and media storage system they're releasing. The hardware is only part of the equation and iOS has been a big focus this year (like Lion's iOS type features). I don't think the market will punish Apple for only doing under the hood hardware upgrades to the iphone after they push and market all the new iOS stuff to the public.

Right now, all signs point to a 4S being revealed on Tuesday.

I'd be 100% sure about this except for the odd news about cases and the photostream icon from a few months back.

I'd guess the case designs for a re-designed iPhone were outed by Apple to trace leaks, but the photostream icon is pretty damning in that it matches the rumored design of an iPhone 5.

I also tend to think Apple knows that the need a new, "fresh" product to compete with Android. I'm fully expecting the 4S on Tuesday, but I will be pleasantly surprised if something else happens on Tuesday.

38 hours........

All will be known

make it 39 until all the news trickles out and on to the web.

I think we won't get many surprises any more. Apple will be a boring predictable company without Steve Jobs. :(

4S = N90A resembles iPhone 4, antennagate is improved, processor for Assistant is installed, work on CDMA/GSM.
5 = N94 is a new design, has 8MP camera, processor for Assistant is installed, works on CDMA/GSM.

This +1

I want to agree with you, I really do... But there are too many unknowns.. Throughout the design of the iPhone, maybe Steve's health went suddenly worse... Maybe he planned to stay on for an early 2012 iPhone 5 but suddenly couldn't. I want a redesigned iPhone 5, or at least an iPhone 4 design with a larger screen. It WILL happen, but I am feeling less confident that it will happen on Tuesday.

... if you read what I posted, I stated why that WOULD BE THE CASE. Good God; some people are so stuck on their own point that they miss the overall subject that's being discussed.

You do know Tim Cook has been running things for a while now right? As in, For a long time, he's been directly behind Apple in doing what needs to be done, in PLACE of Steve Jobs at times.

The problem is that people don't know enough, and they go by news stories an what they can "see". Tim Cook has been a strong guiding hand with Apple for a long time now, it isn't just "Steve Jobs and his right hand"; you do know of Johnathan Ive right? And Phil Shciller?

Here's how it will go down. The most straightforward way for apple to increase ASPs in the next year is the following strategy. Higher revenue. Higher profit margins. The following prices are with a 2-year contract, of course.

iPhone 4 8Gb- free. Available Oct.

iPhone 4 16GB- $99. Available Oct.

iPhone 4S 16Gb- $199. Available Oct.

iPhone 4S 32Gb- $299. Available Oct.

iPhone 5 32Gb- $399. Available Nov. (stomp on Kindle Fire launch)

iPhone 5 64Gb- $499. Available Nov. (stomp on Kindle Fire launch)

Are you kidding me? There is no way Apple would have a premium phone in their line up for that much money. Apple has come too far in lowering prices to do this. I'd subscribe to the theory, if there is in fact an iPhone 5, that the iPhone 4s will replace the 4 going forward with the iPhone 5 being the flagship. That is, of course, if there is a 5.

I found the exact quote, and there is no mention of the iPhone specifically, but considering that the iPhone special event is just in the september quarter, it may well be iPhone related...

The exact quote is:
We also have a future product transition that we're not going to talk about today and these things will impact our September quarter. We remain very confident in our business, our new product pipeline and our momentum.

Thanks. Thats what im trying to say. This does not mean there will be or wont be a new redesigned iphone, but has to be something major.

Something major, like the iPhone release moving to the third quarter?

Because iOS 5. iPhone 5. 5th generation.

This has NOTHING to do with the reason they choose number schemes. The iPhone 3G started with OS 2.0. The 3Gs started with OS 3.0. So the idea that Apple MUST release the iphone 5 with ios 5, etc. just doesn't hold water. If this were the case and there is an iPhone 4s then the 4s would be the 5th gen phone just as the 3g was the 2nd and the 3Gs was the 3rd.
