yeah thats not how it works with smartphones, this isn't get them while you can type of deal, you don't just buy the iphone for the hardware, but also the app store, icloud, etc. iphone isn't an iphone without its services. and if china bans iphone, these servers will go with it.

They are NOT banning iPhone in China! Sheesh!

Chinese gov is banning or restricting gov employees from bringing IPhone to work at their gov job. That’s all.

I just find it interesting that if I see a user post “CCP” I can make an accurate prediction.
Right, well, it's a curtesy - on my part - to the Chinese people. It is their government, and it's despotic, totalitarian, and evil. When I say, in the geopolitical context, "the US", I really mean the US government, but I don't split it the same way because the US government doesn't pursue conquest goals and generally speaking I am very comfortable with the US-led world order. I think the Chinese/Russian world order wouldn't be so nice.

Those were backdoors, not mere vulnerabilities. It's not the only time they found Huawei with dodgy stuff.

If the CCP mandates a backdoor or data harvesting, all Chinese companies have to comply by law, and they cannot say anything about it.

The CCP is also gearing for war with the West.
If US government mandates something all US companies have to comply by law (and by "government" I mean all branches, including the legislative one). That's the definition of the law and US have enough laws to ensure the government gets what they need (see USA Patriot Act).

But the US government is subject to democratic control. I know it's imperfect, but you do have a voice and - more importantly - there are competing interests, which keep things in check. This is not the case in China, where there's only one voice and anyone else can simply disappear in the middle of the night.

Apple China relationship is very strong. This is just media FUD fabrication and of course right before iPhone 15 release. The news is so sketchy…..there is a ban but not enforced, some agencies heard about it and some did not, China foreign technology bans have been around for years etc…ignoring the media noise has proven correct time and time again or better yet taking advantage of fabricated FUD is almost all the time the way to go.
the US has put numerous restrictions on sharing American computer tech on China lately, bans on chip exports to China , AI tech bans, etc. China is retaliating against all this. Right now, they have the upper hand because of the assembly process. A lot of the bits and pieces are made elsewhere and just assembled there. There are a lot of parts that are made in China of course.
The relationship is not that strong. It's a matter of convenience for both countries. China is seeing economic problems right now with a slowdown in overall growth. I think this is part of the reason they are forcing people to use strictly Chinese-made products. Like our American ' Buy American' campaign.
The restrictions put on the US from China for software is astounding. To comply with their government all sorts of concessions have to be made.
In 2015 IBM and Microsoft had to give China their source codes in order to do business in China. Other American companies fell in line.
Now, I believe, there are more restrictions put on code sharing by the US.

Just like the US is banning or restricting gov employees from using chinese phones.

This... Honestly Chinese government is pretty capricious, but then the US did it first in this game

Not only that: the US govt persuaded the US wireless carriers not to sell certain chinese phones such as Huawei. And since the majority of americans buy their phone through their carrier, hence why those phones don’t sell much in the US.

And the fact that some of many users icloud storage is in China will sound alarm bells for apple who put their eggs in one basket there compromising to the other side.

Happily the USA can be trusted, as a good friend...
Yeah it's amazing right - there is actual proof of the CIA / NSA listening on people and foreign leaders... but there is little proof the Chinese are actually doing so.

Either the Chinese are much better at spying (unlikely) or they're just not doing it to the scale the Americans purport they are.

Mass surveillance is like a US specialty: ECHELON, Xkeyscore, PRISIM ... and talking about spy ballons, Project Cold Star, Project Moby Dick, Project Genetrix...

What "we" have is manufactured in Taiwan on the equipment from Netherlands (ASML). And ASML would happily sell their equipment to China if it was not banned to do so by US government (let's remember that western Europe is still occupied by US).
TSMC is not the only Fab we use lol. We have Intel’s FABs, Samsungs FABs, GF Fabs, and Ti fabs lol…

I suggest you do some research on all the Foundries we have in the US alone. Instead of hating on the west.

Where do you get your information? Not a single evidence was ever provided that Huawei devices were spying. It's just a propaganda BS. The common theme here is that the two countries are becoming more and more adversarial (primarily because of US policies) and they do not want the competitor's tech in their countries. The real reason why US banned Huawei was because Huawei was becoming a dominant player in 5G (not just the phones but 5G infrastructure) and more and more telecom companies around the world (including US) started using Huawei hardware. US could not allow for this to continue.
Don’t know where you were but a lot of evidence was provided, not just by government security but private security researchers. LOL

You don't understand how much progress SMIC has made, especially over the last 3 years. The lead chip designer that worked on 7nm and 5nm processes at TSMC now works at SMIC. He voluntarily left with a team of S. Korean and Taiwanese engineers. The ONLY reason why SMIC can't produce 5nm chips is because of export controls, not lack of knowledge of chip design.

"Stealing" engineers is a part of history. The entire US space program is built on Nazi rocket technology. And unlike the Nazi engineers that were coerced to work for the US, the Chinese have simply bought engineers. Can you think of anything more "capitalist?"

And now, the US is reduced to complaining because it cannot compete. I think it's only a matter of time that Intel throws in the towel and goes fabless like AMD. The US has already lost in chip fab as it relies on TSMC for advanced chips.

In the long-run, even the Europeans will move closer to China as SMIC becomes more powerful. ASML can't ignore the Chinese growth market. We're already seeing the beginning of a Sino-Euro partnership in EVs: https://www.politico.com/news/2023/06/23/u-s-and-europe-diverge-on-chinese-electric-cars-ee-00103186 and this will be the future for chips as well.
I assure you that *nobody* from the west voluntarily goes to work for the CCP, especially on projects to compete against the west.

Stealing/Poaching engineers is also not the same as stealing entire designs and chip architectures.

Now go and find it (on the Internet). All those were just baseless allegations. No evidence was ever provided.

Stop saying "West"; TSMC isn't the West. I don't know what demented fantasy land you live in but Intel is the west and they've lost...

Taiwan is not officially part of the "west" but they are fully backed by the west and are a threat to China. Counting them out as not being on the west's team is a huge insult to Taiwanese independence.

Intel hasn't lost, and neither has any American company (NVIDIA, AMD, Apple, Ti, etc). China isn't outdoing us on anything.

60 second google search. If you've ever actually used a Huawei device (or any Chinese phone!) you'd easily be able to see first had as well lol... It's widespread knowledge about dangerous data collection in Chinese devices running in the background, easily spotted if you've ever played around with rooting or debloating Chinese phones.

What does being politically backed by the West have to do with production of advanced chips? The US had to beg TSMC to start 5nm production in the US and what did TSMC do? They built a factory just for show and then produced nothing. The Taiwanese are just Chinese with a different political ideology. That's it.

America can't even produce ventilators - it had to rely on imports from China during COVID.

And the world's premier auto companies in Europe are using Chinese battery technology:

https://electrek.co/2023/06/29/tesla-model-3-rumored-new-catl-m3p-lfp-cells-longer-range/

The Chinese have won and no amount of b*tching and complaining by you or any other American is going to change that. Instead of competing head on, the only thing US politicians can do is start a trade war. Where were all these politicians when the US was outsourcing jobs to China and Mexico over the last 30 years?

This is probably why when Russia said to US let's put everything we do with regards to cyber activity on a table US went: "Say what? How can we possibly blame you for intervening in our elections if we do that?"

Obviously whoever is more active in cyber space got a lot more to lose by putting everything on a table.

"Taiwanese are just Chinese with a different political ideology. That's it." - Taiwanese aren't Chinese, they are Taiwanese... with their own government, ideology, relations, and goals. Again an insult to Taiwan independence.
Before the Japanese were defeated they were considered to be the east as well, now they are considered part of the western world. Being politically backed by the west has a HUGE amount to do with the production of advanced chips, they get to share our resources, technology, and knowledge.

TSMC hasn't completed the factory in the US so obviously nothing has been produced yet, However construction is speeding up and with big players like Apple helping fund them, production will happen and outdo China as usual. https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Te...more-workers-to-speed-U.S.-plant-construction

The biggest ventilator manufacture is American. https://www.nsmedicaldevices.com/analysis/seven-ventilator-manufacturers/

European Car manufactures do not solely rely on Chinese cells, they use LG, Samsung, and Panasonic cells as well. VW is even building its own Battery Plants in the US and Canada, along with some plants in Europe. https://electrek.co/2023/03/13/volkswagen-plots-first-north-american-ev-battery-cell-plant-location/

The Chinese have not "won", let me know when they have a chip as powerful as anything we have, dont have to rely on poaching western engineers and stealing western designs, and can manufacture 5nm and beyond chips (something Chinese propaganda claims they already can do but actually can't)
