No its not.

WineX was forked off from the Wine in 2002.

I remember. Let me rephrase:
Cider != a game natively in OpenGL code

Unfortunately any of those solutions will end up with sub-par performance when compared to running the game on Windows in BootCamp.

I just called 2K to ask if I would have to rebuy if I buy it for PC now. The rep told me that I would indeed have to repurchase the game to get a Mac copy.

For anyone who wants to call, use this number for the US 1 (866) 219-9839. Although.. I talked to someone in Britain.

I also wonder.. Since the game's engine is DirectX only, are they doing a true port or will we be purchasing a WINE wrapped game?

I highly doubt the rep knew what he was talking about. Those guys don't get informed about unannounced games, and certainly not about these types of details.

As the statement by firaxis regarding Civ V and steamworks seemed to include the Mac version, I would want to bet this is not the case, and you'll be able to download a mac steam version for free. This is part of the reason why I bought the windows version.

I just hope it's not Aspyr doing the port. Civ IV has the most ridiculous graphical glitches.

this is a direct quote from apple.ca in the features tab under MBP

LOL Asus being low end, hilarious, i guess MBP's are low end crap too, Asus used to make Macbook pros!, they also used make the mother boards in Mac Pros (dont know about now)

yes Asus is crap, thats why they have the highest reliability in laptops, Asus currently makes the higher end sony laptops which is why sony is also near the top. (if you doubt that chart i just posted, keep in mind that chart is Squaretrade's statistics, they are the largest warranty provider globally so i think they have pretty good numbers to back them up)

http://www.businessweek.com/it100/2005/company/ASUS.htm

This means nothing. What does this include? Mechanical breakdown of drives? Asus sells more netbooks, which have less moving parts, so it would be logical if that number was higher for apple.

As you say, they parts are made by third parties, so if you can't credit apple for high quality parts, then you also can't blame them for low quality parts.

I think you can credit them for sourcing the right parts and designing the logic board etc. The right comparision would be between a PC and a mac with the same processor, amount of ram and number of ports/drives. I don't know, but in my own experience, my macs have survived far longer than any other pc I've used (although that isn't fair since my pc's have been low-end)

Uhh, the iMac should have no problem running this at native res as long as you keep anti-aliasing down which will hardly matter if you are playing at 2560x1440. As for Anisotropic filtering, it's hardly taxing on the GPU. People should have no problem setting that to 16x.

Apple ships products with GPU's that fit in their TDP range. The high end iMac has the second best GPU they could've given it at the time. The MacBook Pro has the best NVIDIA GPU that fit in their TDP at the time. You may say that none of this matters because you just want the best performance but Apple's GPU choices comes into play with battery life, heat and space requirements.

I'm having Civ V on a new IMac i3 3,2 GHz , 8GB RAM, ATI Radeon 5670 512 MB on Windows 7 Bootcamp and it rauns like hell on 1920x1080 with everything maxed out. But I can't wait for the MAC Version, keeping thumbs pressed that it comes via Steam.

I do believe you can buy almost all mac games on steam. where as you buy it once and you get in for both platforms.

anyways I bought several copies of this game on steam a little bit ago, but it will be nicer now, that we wont have to bootcamp all of our macs before we can start our lan party

Yes, but I want the disc.

too bad it will run like crap, not even the new imac can run this at its native with very high settings.

at 2560x1600, forget it, the game needs a 9800GT to run "OK", i would say you need at least a GTX460 1GB to run decent at that resolution, maybe even a a GTX480 if you want full AA and AF

apple needs to stop shipping their products with 2 year old base level video cards to be competitive in the gaming market.

You sure about that? I bought a new iMac 3.60GHz i5, 4GB RAM and 5670 Radeon and it runs just fine in Win 7 under Bootcamp. I maxed everything out.

I don't think it's likely that this will utilize SteamPlay, as Aspyr is doing the port. They simply cannot afford to give the game away to people who bought the PC version.

That could be the reason they announced it so soon after launch, to freeze the Mac buyers so the could buy it on Steam.

That doesn't seem like a valid reason to me. They already have your money and they won't give you a copy for your native operating system?

Aspyr don't have your money from the PC purchase. 2K Games do. Somebody needs to pay Aspyr for their work.

The best we can hope for if the game appears on Steam at all is a discount for those that have purchased the Windows version. My bet is that it simply doesn't appear.

My bad; I understand now.

Now my dilemma is: Buy for Windows or Mac? Might run better on Bootcamp..

Oh, it definitely will run better in Bootcamp. But there's a chance we could get the Steam PC version for free with the Mac purchase, like with Supreme Commander.

I saw it myself, on Aspyr's page. It was an accident, and they pulled it.

About a week later on Twitter they promised a new announcement for the following day, but that day came and they said we'd have to wait a little longer. But trust me, it's coming.

From @gameagentstore on Oct 6th:

Hmm, looks like that announcement we talked about yesterday will have to wait a bit longer... Sorry!

Cougarcat, I hope you & macrumors are right! Thanks for the reply.

I hope that the Mac version of Civ V is a real port, and not just a Cider "port," which is basically just a Windows app with some Mac compatibility layers wrapped around it. I ended up just installing The Sims 3 on a Boot Camp partition because the performance with Cider was sub-par, and the game would freeze, which it doesn't do on my XP partition.

It will probably be cider again.

Civ 5 for Mac is a joke, it's just a half-assed Wine wrapper! And yet they have the gall to say that it won't be possible to port mod capabilities because they're based on .NET?

It's better to install WINE yourself (WineSkin being a good way to) and just use Winetricks to install Steam and grab the PC version of Civ 5; it runs just as well, but has all the PC capabilities.

It does not use WINE, it's a native port.

Aspyr developer, on modding:

Listen, I've been playing Civ for about 15 years (take note of my join date on civfanatics), so I totally get the importance of modding. This time around we got on the porting train fairly early and will be working with this product for a couple more years to come, so there's a lot of opportunity there. We've only had the code for like 3 months, so did you really expect us to have ported the modding tools yet? Or completely figure out a solution to the DLL issue? (Yeah I know it's the same issue as IV, but once V was announced I kind of lost interesting in doing anything more with IV) Frankly, modding support is going to stay an "unofficial" effort on my part, kind of like how Brad used to support our older titles with patch updates. I doubt I'd ever be able to justify the effort officially no matter how vocal you guys are.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I really wish someone would release a playable version of the original "Civilization" -- they keep adding more bells and whistles to make things infinitely more complex, but the original game is still more addicting than any of the later incarnations.

Fun Civ Fact: The original Mac game contained soruce files that were easily changeable w/ any utility like the old ResEdit. When we were in middle school, we had a lot of fun editing the game scripts to include lots of curse words and references to human anatomy.
