The March date is way off for a new design. Maybe a minor update around then but I anticipate the redesign to announced at NAB in April. That's late enough for Montevina then (just).

Howdya know they haven't been working on a new design for years? Having said that it would be strange to release a NEW MBP (rather than 'new' - merely boosted specs) so soon after the MBA - unless they were released together.

All this stuff about stuff being released only on Tuesdays - how much truth is there in that? I'm sure i've head 'rubbish - thats not a tuesday' way too many times, often to no avail.

Eh, I doubt you'd see it at NAB.

I think we're going to see DVD Studio Pro 5 with blu-ray support at NAB, and possibly news/release of Phenomenon (Shake 5).

MacBook Pro will have more rounded edges like MacBook Air. Think of right now as the same situation when the 12" and 17" PowerBooks first got released and the TiBook was still the 15". The keyboard is certainly going to be that of the MacBook Air's. I know they are separate product lines, but it still makes sense. Goodbye to the current aluminum style keyboard on the MacBook Pro.

I'm doing a lot of heavy typing so I'm going to have to stick with the current generation MBP. I want to be able to type at ease without an external. That's just my experience though.

I'm a student as well, and I waited for this update to happen. If it's not going to happen until March, then we'll have to see how long it takes for me to balance my finances before paying for the MBP outright. If it happens before the update then i'm running with it. I feel like anyone who needs a MBP right now, should just get one now.

Why? I got a MBP in August, and it is working quite well. The only real feature I would care for is the multi-touch touchpad. The problem is that it only works on Apple programs...

why? because we are waiting for an updated MBP. updated as in, able to justify the cost difference between it and the competition (which is currently, unjustifiable)

Apple have released machines at NAB before. My rev c 12" pbook for one.

An announcement (not release) will fit with Montevina coming out. More realistically though it may be ss late as Sept for the redesign esp. if they just put penryns in the current Santa Rosa macines.

If you do break down and jump through the window you will be most sad when MBP is finally updated and there you sit with your Vaio or XPS, your fists banging on that now firmly shut window and your not so firmly shut ,now empty, wallet wilting in the darkness of the vicious vistas land......It's late, I think I might be tired.
I'm being patient...I'll wait some more, but they need to do something. Leopard>Vista but not to the level where I'm willing to sacrifice significant hardware features that I desire.

I'm not counting on blu-ray, as again I believe Jobs is trying to force downloads down our throats instead of giving blu-ray a chance as a media option. I'm Joe Customer, and I want a choice. I have plenty of blu-ray movies I would like to be able to view on a portable platform and not be required to download for a stupid fee. I suppose I could rent said movie on DVD and rip it but then again...I'm renting something I already frickin' own.

If I end up having to get an XPS or Vaio, I'm sure I'll be quite happy with it even the the OS isn't as rock solid as Leopard.

I want a Mac however, I would like Apple to make my choice an easy one by actually giving me a choice.

Yep...

...Agreed.

I really need a replacement for my PowerBook. If I gotta wait till March, I won't like it, but I'll wait till then to buy. With only six months on avg. between new chips, March just seems excessively far off.

macbook pro is for people who need a good computer, macbook air is for people who need to show off... they do not, nor ever will compete with one another.

Sorry to stray off subject but aren't we over the MBA being only for show offs yet.
It's a brilliant piece of gear that might not be right for you but it is for many others.

Regardless...I am disappointed if the 17th March is true.
I was hoping to get a new 17" sooner.....but if it's gonna be cheaper then I'm happy to wait. I priced out a loaded 17" yesterday and got serious sticker shock

No way they will stick us with chicklets ;)

March 17th seems like quite the random day. But I'll take it if is.

I desperately need a new 17" MBP with the high-res glossy screen. Now.

For all those out there with MBP sticker shock Let me just say that I bought my 15" Ti powerbook G4 with superdrive in 2002 for $2999 U.S. So not only has the price gone down but you'll get the 17" w/ superdrive now for $2799 so don't fret. You get more for less now!

i'm like needing a mbp now, my old pb is definitely on its last legs and i'm thinking now is a perfect time for an upgrade for both apple and for me

Mid-March? April?? Post-June???

Please tell me you are kidding. It's been almost 8 months since the last (real) revision, which isn't that bad, but add another 2+x months on top of it and the current MBP is starting to look stale for a $2000+ device. My current PowerBook is still great for private use, but I need a powerful Intel-based portable for professional use ASAP, and I don't want to have any Windows or Linux-based device that doesn't even stand up to the breathtaking usability of my PowerBook.

And I don't just mean OS X, although nothing compares to it, it's also the hardware. It's simply amazing how much performance Apple manages to squeeze into notebooks as thin and lightweight as the MacBook Pro. Also, I've seen bad trackpads on non-Apples and I've seen moderately useful ones. Only on Macs have I seen ones that really really rock! Then you get all sorts of high-speed ports with power supply on the MBP. I could have all that now, but I simply wouldn't forgive myself if I buy now and a cheaper or faster Penryn-based MBP with faster GFX comes out in a month or two.

I don't care if the next rev doesn't include all the goodies that Apple would like to introduce in Q2 or later. The improvements I named above are ok for me. Well, support for 2x4GB would not hurt either, of course, even if 4GB are sufficient for now. :) I just hope that Apple will give their high-end notebook customers a sign that their money is well spent with or without Montevina.

Hurrah! for us elderly expensive TiBook's! My 1 GIG processor 1 GIG RAM was over £2500 UK pounds then which was serious, and rather more than the US price at the time.
At least Apple don't do the Adobe thing and DOUBLE it. Just scandalous.

It's amazing what you can still make the TiBooks do, but at the moment it's mostly amazing how long it takes them to do it.
Roll on the MBP upgrade, hopefully with a better graphics card. PLEASE!

Right? I've been talking about the fact that I've misplaced the hand-crank that came with my Tibook.

Quoted for the truth. The MBP is looking pretty lacklustre imho. Oh don't get me wrong, it's a damn fast computer. But it's far from cutting edge right now. It's lagging behind the PC's due to the slow update cycles (and Apple price premium) and especially in comparison to the relatively fast MB's for so much less money. Right now I'm pretty disappointed for how much you pay for essentially a 128mb videocard and 2" of screen size.

If the macbook pro waits until march/april to update to the penryn chips, then it's already missed out on the technology curve.

this is exactly the reason why I am waiting. the price of the macbook pro is no longer competive and appropriate to the product that you get for the pricetag. Other companies are dropping prices on the products before the penryn releases it seems, whereas apple is keeping theirs the same. I hope they update soon so I can justify myself for purchasing an apple product rather than something else

The whole price thing is the primary reason I'm waiting. Redesigns are one thing but the current price is insane (in a bad way) for what you get.

It had better be more than just a speed bump with multitouch included. There's no reason that should even take so long to incorporate.

Is Nehalem slated for release just before the Christmas time period? If so, would it be more likely to get that put into a design that was altered around Feb/March time?

How lame are we for endlessly talking about what possibly or could be or should be released?

It's like having a crush on a girl in high school and thinking about how she should like you back.
