March 17th seems like quite the random day. But I'll take it if is.

I desperately need a new 17" MBP with the high-res glossy screen. Now.

forget black aluminum -- the next update is going to be green. plus, if they put some enviro-enhancements under the hood (like a new battery design or something) along with the speed bumps, they can tout it as "wearin' of the green" on st. patrick's day.

but i still prefer a feb. 5 update, rather than waiting another month and a half.

How lame are we for endlessly talking about what possibly or could be or should be released?

It's like having a crush on a girl in high school and thinking about how she should like you back.

yes, the fabled updated MBP is the "little red-haired girl" of the moment, isn't it?:)

And they will have new design. Somehow shamrockish :p

this isnt too jive.
its a close date that i can wait for, but 2 weeks is closer.
i would much rather have one in 2 weeks than a month.
i say this only my concious, not taking into account actual factors like
if i wait a month the form might change.

I hope they release it on the 5th! The anticipation's killing me!
As far as what I'd like to see on the design:
I love the current look of the computer and hope they keep it. If they add the black lining like the current iMac, I'll probably buy a current generation, even with the lower specs because i HATE the look of the new iMac. However, I would like to see some slight changes like the magnetic latch, the mutitouch trackpad, and maybe a new keyboard (don't really care though, just want it to be ambient lit again). Besides that I just want to see hardware upgrades. As far as the likelihood. well...

Considering the rumors that the new ones will include the trackpad, that would imply a slight redesign, in which I hope they add the magnetic latch. However it would make more sense for Apple to change the design on the Montevina release this summer because it will be a bigger step. It makes even more sense for them to do a redesign when they switch over to Nahelem. I've heard it requires a different design, and so why change a computer's design, only to do so months later. This is probably when we'll see a big form update. I personally like the current design. I don't think its outdated. My only two problems with it are the latch and the plastic edging around the whole thing seems a bit fragile. And well, maybe make the aluminum a little sturdier because I've heard of people bending it.

MBA second (portable) computer

Sorry to stray off subject but aren't we over the MBA being only for show offs yet.

It's a brilliant piece of gear that might not be right for you but it is for many others.

Agreed ... the MBA is a second (portable) computer.

Not a heavy-weight, just something to carry on a short trip or between the home and office. A luxury portable, so to speak.

Being that it's not a full featured computer, it's not for me.

Regardless...I am disappointed if the 17th March is true.

I was hoping to get a new 17" sooner.....but if it's gonna be cheaper then I'm happy to wait. I priced out a loaded 17" yesterday and got serious sticker shock

Longer to save up for that (probably not diminishing) sticker price.

My current computer is a Powerbook 17@1.5ghz, which I considered a safe buy since I thought it'd be years before they could lever a G5 into a portable configuration :(. Sigh ... so much for my acumen!

I need an LED backlit display (mine is dimming), a 320GB HD (my 160GB upgrade drive is almost filled and I need Windows), and I need the machine to last at least three years.

Amen to that.
I also think the new iMac is the weakest design out of Apple in a long while.
Where is the innovation?
I can't imagine what a really uniquely styled MacBook Pro might look like.
That was the amazing thing about Apple....you never could anticipate the revolutionary stuff like the first 3 iMacs. Or the TiBook.
I just hope they remember that most of us use the MBP for hard work. It's no toy....especially at the price ;)

yeah...they use G4 imacs as public terminals at BGSU still...and despite their age, they're far more capable than any of their windows counterparts, that's for effing sure.

Just sold my iMac G4 to the neighbor kid for $300. He's gaming night and day on it. It never has had a problem.

Hurrah! for us elderly expensive TiBook's! My 1 GIG processor 1 GIG RAM was over £2500 UK pounds then which was serious, and rather more than the US price at the time.
At least Apple don't do the Adobe thing and DOUBLE it. Just scandalous.

It's amazing what you can still make the TiBooks do, but at the moment it's mostly amazing how long it takes them to do it.
Roll on the MBP upgrade, hopefully with a better graphics card. PLEASE!

Damn I thought I got stung with my half gig ram for £2200. Having just moved back to the UK I'm feeling the Brit tax more than ever, and it drives me bloody mad.

Just glad I got my MBP when they upgraded to Santa Rosa while I was in Japan!

Dear God, this wait is getting crazy. Seems like they're just taking random guesses!!
Pfff I really hope it comes soon, now that i've been waiting for so long it seems stupid to give in now (all that waiting would've been for nothing). So I'm hanging in there. Come on Steve!

chickenninja are you suggesting they'll rename it or something? How would you know? If you've got this information, then when will they update the damn thing? With or without that name.

it better not be the 17th
im only america from 11th til the 15th so i want to pick up a cheap and new MBP while im there

That's what they're suggesting, but I call that this guy hangs around near bridges with goats, (if you get me). Remember we get this almost every time an updated product is being prepped, someone claims they have insider knowledge and makes a wild prediction. If they are right, they get awesome respect and are listened to in the future, if they get it wrong, most have already forgotten. Others, like here, make vague suggestions hoping people will just believe they work for Apple.

Good for you!
It's not the VAT that annoys me about Adobe's pricing, though that doesn't help. It's the fact that Adobe charge DOUBLE the USA pricing in the UK AND THEN add the tax!
