At first I thought the SD slot would be a mere appendix. Now I look at it as almost a necessity. Perfect for exchanging data, loading/unloading photos from cameras, a great way to enlarge the memory of the pad.

Sloppy, sloppy, slo-hoppy. If they can vacuform one shell, they can make a dozen in minutes. The photos are so bad that these shells could be imperfect and spray painted.

However, WHY? I'm not sure why someone would do all this effort for one-leg-up. Most likely they are real, but are they for the iPad or something else with a similar form?

I agree on the SD slot. Seems like it would be a great addition. As for the cases, they have to get the specs from somewhere and I would think the way Apple is about security on new products, specs were sent to 3rd parties so they could prep... but if that's the case, I stand by my assumption. Apple is closer than we think to releasing the new iPad. They would not release mechanical specs too soon because they know this sort of stuff will happen.

Again, I think the new iPad and the CMDA iPhone are going to be the two things that distract people from CES announcements. Apple knows how to steal the show and these two things would do it.

It seems weird to me that they would need such a large gap for just a memory card. On iMacs and MacBook Pro's it's a slot about the size of a dock connector slot. Maybe this is for someone else's tablet?

Just a guess, but maybe the USB slot is covered by a hinged door like a camera, thus the bigger cut out is to accommodate opening the door.

Liq metal?

Hoping for a liquid metal case, higher res screen, faster processor (1,4Ghz?), more RAM (512mb), USB (?... Prob not), front and rear facing cameras. :D

Perhaps a bit ambitious for a second gen.

I think a rear facing camera that can do video and still would be useful.

Notice that the opening is wider than the dock connector?

I checked and a SD card slot is the same size as the dock connector so here's my guess...

SD + Mini USB

I also think that from those cases ipad 2g will look like a big 1st gen iPhone with the aluminum back and rounded corners.

Camera not in the center? I'd prefer it in the center.

On a tablet of this size, rear camera will look weird no matter the placement. I am really surprised Apple goes for it. As Zuckerberg said, iPad is not a mobile device (in the way phones are) and thus the camera will be of very limited use.

SD Slot

SD card slot was high on my wish list for Ipad. Even before release of the first one. The lack of it made me decide to wait for 2nd gen.

Transferring images just takes to long with the large size of files. USB is good but SD would most definitely solve this issue to the max. Reader would hardly take any space.

I will be patient and get the next one!

Your going to compare Steve Jobs judgements against someone who made another Social Networking site that will die in a years time?

Not cool.

Really? You could've been enjoying an iPad and just bough the CCK.

Slot is for a camera button

I am an electronic design engineer and I have been thinking long and hard about the slot in the case. It seems to provide access to the rear of the iPad (not the side). This suggests it is not for a socket/interface. Rather it is for a button to take pictures. Imagine trying to take a photo with the front facing camera whilst trying to touch the screen to activate the shutter. It's awkward enough with the iPhone. A shutter release button in the rear makes such more sense.

I can't really see the utility of a back facing camera, but one on the front is absolutely a must for face time. And also an SD card slot would pe perfect, alongside more powerful hardware for photo and movie editing on-te-fly.

Ok, so now on the Mac Forums I've heard

SD Cards are a dead format.
IR Transmitting of signals to home AV equipment is a dead format.
BluRay is a dead format.
Flash is a Dead format.
USB3 is a dead format.
1080p is a pointless format.

Anything else that Apple Fans feel that people are using now is a dead/pointless format and they should stop using/buying such things and see the Apple Way ahead?

FM Radio? - I mean, who doesn't want to waste their internet data on listening to internet radio, it's not like 3G plans are expensive or anything. sarcasm

HDMI on an iMac - I mean, seriously, if you not going to lets us have full 1080p movies via iTunes, Blu ray or desktop graphics cards, FGS let us have a HDMI port, for our PS3's, blu ray player etc.

I would have thought sd card and micro sim. All iPad will have 3/4G data as standard but you might need to buy a Ostend license pack from the app store to activate it.

They would not make the opening bigger for a sim card slot... you almost never take it out.

look at the iphone cases... they don't leave the sim slot open.

And for the people who don't think it needs the back facing camera... you don't get it!
it really needs the back facing camera if it's going to be useful for stuff like barcode scanning. The iPad would be really useful for inventory management if it could scan barcodes... if only...

iPhone handles that task quite well. Why would somebody prefer to carry the significantly larger (than the iPhone) iPad to perform that task?

I've seen someone post Hard drives are dead and cloud storage is the future. I dont think i've seen anyone top that one on the stupidity meter yet.

Display port would be cool- allow you to use a monitor and then the ipad as the input device/magic trackpad- or use ipad as a media player and control it with iphone, much like an aTV. Possibilities abound!

Mark my words- there will be a display port in that hole. The reason all the internets are abuzz about the iPad cutting in to existing pc sales is that the iPad 2 will have a dock that includes a display port out and it will be able to power a display, as a docked computer. It will spit out 1024 by 768 until iOS 5, which will allow native display resolutions like 1920 by 1080, and apps will be able to scale to reach the new resolution, like pages and apps unrelated to fixed graphics size.

Think beyond pictures- a rear camera on an iPad could be used for all sorts of cool/useful stuff- most notably augmented reality. Imagine an architect taking a client to an empty lot, holding up an iPad and allowing the client to see the exact design- even do a virtual AR walkthrough.

Gotta think outside the box- like apple :)

If the next iPad has a retina display and front-facing camera I would go for it!

This is exciting!

do you even know what a retina display is? the ipad would need a resolution of 2048x1536 or something above that to have 250ish DPI, the iphone 4 has a 300+ dpi screen.

fm is dead
hdmi is dead
money is no object, if it is i guess you are too POOR to afford an apple product

in other news, core2duo is in, slow ass ddr3 ram running at ddr2 speeds is in too! YAY!

I got this one.

Ok, I think the poster means retina display in the form of a quadrupled resolution display from the 3GS to the iPhone 4.

As for the rest of the marketing stuff concerning the technicalities of the display's dpi, I don't think he was talking about it.

So yes, I do think he even knows what a retina display is. Nice snark though.
