(Backups and OS updates are all an iPad can’t do alone. And OS self-updates are something Mac OS has been doing forever, so iOS can certainly handle that at some point.)

iOS on Apple TV can do its updates without a computer.

Let's be sensible :)

If you are going to fit only one memory card slot into your device, then it makes sense to fit the one that's the most popular in most devices, camera's which would be an SD Card slot.

Yes, they could fit a Compact Flash, they were popular in the early days and still in use in some DSLR's

They could fit an XD Card slot for Fuji's or a hold for Sony memory sticks.

But those, whilst pleasing some would not be the logical one to pick if you only had to pick one.

Fuji / Olympus (xD pushers) and Sony (MemStick Pro Duo) have now switched on all their cameras to SD (Sony are dual format with MSPD). There was one Samsung recently which used MicroSD but they came to their senses, and all current Samsungs are full SD.

So, as you say, it makes total sense to have a SD card IF its function was limited (photo transfer only). I think if they put a USB in, people would assume, rightly, that it would be more functional.

To the guy that didn't want a SD slot because his full frame camera uses CF, I hope you were joking.

Prob speaker or extraneous

The iPad is built around the "Air" model for wireless connectivity. If you can afford an iPad, why not buy a Wifi-SD card and sync ota to online storage? SD is a dead medium, as iPhones/BB/Droids with direct picasa/facebook/youtube export take over as cameras. And like others have said, there is already an inexpensive SD adapter that doesn't add ANY volume to the device itself. This is either a case for a knockoff (i.e. epad) product, based on an early and purposefully vague spec provided by Apple, or designed for an early prototype, like the original "camera-ipod-touch" that surfaced a while ago on Ebay.

Also, how could a rear-camera be protected from dirt/debris in a device this sized? Folio cases would have to have a rather ugly hole in the back which, given that most are large and leather, would probably shift around and need to be re-alligned for taking photos. If anything, the camera will be a gimmick, (lacking flash, still photos, like the iPod camera now, and as one user has posted the case lacks a cutout for flash) that will give them an excuse to allow it to run iMovie, which will rock, but still not be as good as the 'actual' (i.e. still) camera of the iPhone, and perhaps the 5G iPod Touch.

Perhaps the new slot is for a multi-adaptor like the old Air, but I doubt it since Apple seems so keen on minimizing moving/breakable parts. Plus, why not just route all that through the dock connector, if its already capable of outputting HD video?

Who knows, but the simplest explanation would be the one Engadget offered: a redesigned speaker.

That big opening reminds me of one I saw cut into a case for the original MacBook Air (with the pop-out ports that tucked away when you didn't need them). I wonder if they revamped that for the iPad, possibly with SD or USB ports there.

Just speculating.

Yes, I bet you’re right. In which case, case-makers could cover that area when not in use, with some kind of flap. Better that than a big square hole in the silicone.

It's for a mini BlueRay player! :d

Lol, keeping the dream alive.

I'm just stoked for the SD card slot. Couldn't figure out for the life of me why Apple hasn't been putting them in their computers for years.

"Repair firm Powerbook Medic has discovered another set of claimed next-generation iPad silicone cases also showing a hole for a rear-facing camera and a rectangular cutout serving an unknown purpose in the same locations as the other cases."

Do you think it could be a "trapdoor," for usb or other input like the first macbook air?

What the hell is the point of a rear-facing camera on something as big as an iPad? That's going to be really hard to get a nice picture on the thing. :p

10 years ago, people were saying "What the hell is the point of a camera on something you use to make phonecalls with?"

No Hole For A Flash?

The cases looks to me like they are lacking a hole in the case for a flash? Surely they won't make us wait for a 3rd generation iPad to include a camera flash? I hope this is fake. The lack of a camera with a flash stopped me from buying an iPad!

Too big... has to be something else that requires lots of space. Ports, Antenna, or ????

I don't think so. Take a look at some current cases (e.g. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/reveal-ipad# , http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=510089#), the length of the hole is about just as large. If you're thinking of how it extends into the back of the case, maybe the new iPad may have speaker grills that extend into the back of the case. If you look at the other holes in the case (like the mute switch or the headphone jack), these too extend into the back of the case. What this suggests to me is that the iPad will have a curved edge. Unlike the current one, where the edge can hold the speaker grills, the new iPad's curved (and likely thinner) edges may not be able to hold grills, requiring them to extend into the back of the case.

An example of this is the mute switch on the iPhone 3G and the 3GS, where the side was very curved and required the cutout for the mute switch to extend into the back of the case. (Take a look at this Belkin case for the 3G and 3GS: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=492874#).

Besides I have a very hard time believing, as some suggest, a flip down door for more ports is coming to the iPad.

why do you need flash for a 10" tablet? for god sake, if you want a camera with flash, just buy a digital camera..

stop whining.. no one forcing you to buy an iPad

If the next iPad has a retina display and front-facing camera I would go for it!

This is exciting!

I don't get why you want a rear-facing camera in an iPad. still think you will be looking up people nose's with a front one and facetime.

My brother has 8 iPads for his managers in the field... They ALL want cameras in the iPad. I want one also.

At first I thought the SD slot would be a mere appendix. Now I look at it as almost a necessity. Perfect for exchanging data, loading/unloading photos from cameras, a great way to enlarge the memory of the pad.

A person with lots of media could keep several of these cards in a case to carry with them. Until the interior memory becomes capacious, the SD card is a good addition.

I think it's odd that they all surfaced on the same day.... Why all at once?

My guess is they are genuine. Too many similarities.

Sloppy, sloppy, slo-hoppy. If they can vacuform one shell, they can make a dozen in minutes. The photos are so bad that these shells could be imperfect and spray painted.

However, WHY? I'm not sure why someone would do all this effort for one-leg-up. Most likely they are real, but are they for the iPad or something else with a similar form?

I'm hoping for SD card slot or USB connector, camera (two would be cool - one front facing minimal), and a better display is always nice.

I think the SD card would be nice for direct transfer of photos. Heck with the Camera kit... build it in. Otherwise, the only other function that would be cool is to make it so the iPad can be completely untethered from a computer.
