Someone already did the math and calculated it was cheaper to lose customers and the class action lawsuit than it would be to recall the laptops or cover repairs.

Reminds me of when Ford decided it was cheaper to pay off families than to fix the Ford Pinto and it's super explosive nature.

You can go to an Apple store and have them run vtest on a MacBook Pro. It's quick and will tell you if the graphics are dying.

Only good thing about an Apple depot repair is that they will fix your device for a set fee no matter what is wrong. The repair covers everything so they would have replaced your display and any internals needed to get it working again. They also replace RAM modules and hard drives (if necessary)

$500 just buy a new laptop

I hate when people bring up the pinto issue. Studies have shown that the pinto was no more likely to explode on impact than any other similar sized car from the time period.

I wouldn't mind getting some money back for the hundreds it cost to replace my logic board last year.

Good, hopefully this will get apple to cover the laptops and repair them for free. The 2008, 2010 and 2011 all have dGPU issues, its ludicrous that apple refuses to acknowledge this issue and fix the affected computers.

The iMac's had the gpu issue also.

I had the same thing on my 2011 27" iMac -- the graphics issue appeared...and Apple refused to fix it for free because I had a 3rd party SSD installed in my machine. The repair cost me over $400 out of pocket. But it's fixed now, and they replaced it with a better 2GB card even.

I'm a loyal Apple user but my 2011 MacBook Pro is esentially an overpriced pc that I can only do basic tasks on due to the fact I have to disable the ATI GPU. I do plan on getting a retina one when the new Intel processor hits but Apple should give us some compensation. I look forward to my 20.00 iTunes store credit after the lawyers get their take #

Sad and it even goes back to the 2008 models.

FINALLY! This has been an insult as an apple customer. ALL 2011 Mbps with AMD gpus eventually fails. It is a *design* flaw, and should not occur. In Europe apple has been forced to replace these machines due to laws saying that a laptop should work at least 5 years without manufacturer issues. Apple remained mum on the topic and refused to give any statements to any media outlet, clearly trying to avoid the issue at all costs.

Hopefully now my 3000$ brick of a machine will finally work again.

So, I was one of these people with a 15 inch 2011 CTO MBP, and I had the logic board fail on me. It was during the first year, so it was covered by warranty. I took care of the whole repair through AppleCare. However, the process was a headache and my disk was wiped.

I do not have that laptop anymore (sold on eBay), but I was the original purchaser, still have the receipt, and the serial number. Does anyone know if I would be eligible to receive some sort of settlement money even though I don't still have the laptop? The claim issue was filed under my name. Anyone familiar with the terms of this?

Regardless of what in depth studies shown, the response by Ford was still there. The deaths still happened and the attitude and response of "well we'd rather just pay off the families than to take care of an issue" is still awful. Then there was the same exact response with the Bronco rollovers, and the Explorer tire issues.

My 2010 iMac (a refurb provided to me when my 2009 iMac graphics also failed. twice.) also is developing this problem.

I've been in a few class action lawsuits - which neither makes me a lawyer or an expert on CALs, but I pay attention... Micron ram price fixing, Apple monitor size false advertising, iTunes book sale price fixing, and a few others...

For all this American emphasis on being free and making your own choices, you do seem to complain a lot and start suing people when you are making the wrong choices yourself.

My mbp 2011 crashed last month. after a unsuccessful repair of a unofficial apple repairstore (it was cheaper than the 500 euro they usually charge) i gave up all hope of a cheap repair. So i just joined the group of affected users and mailed tim cook out of despair. The day after i mailed him and while i was already looking for a replacement windows pc they called. apparently you can get special service by mailing Tim. well i did get special service. i went to Amsterdam for the repair the week after i got my mbp back all working!

i had good experience with the CC of apple
but having the same logicboard i hope the machine will stay alive until there is a better solution! For now im glad that i can type this on osx and not windows

Exactly - it's unfortunately not an isolated issue. My 2010 MBP has just gone into the shop Friday for inspection/repair for repeated GPU panics - a known issue.

Still a hell of a lot better than the 1st generation MBPs, of which we had several. Random shutdowns, bulging batteries tilting the MBP up off the desk, battery life degrading to a few minutes within a year, power cables between wall and adaptor failing, power cable between adaptor and MBP melting through the insulation.

There are other states besides California and florida.. What about people from new jersey..
