This issue isn't limited to MacBooks. There's plenty of iMac users with bad video cards which appears to be essentially the same issue.

Someone already did the math and calculated it was cheaper to lose customers and the class action lawsuit than it would be to recall the laptops or cover repairs.
You can go to an Apple store and have them run vtest on a MacBook Pro. It's quick and will tell you if the graphics are dying.
Only good thing about an Apple depot repair is that they will fix your device for a set fee no matter what is wrong. The repair covers everything so they would have replaced your display and any internals needed to get it working again. They also replace RAM modules and hard drives (if necessary)
Reminds me of when Ford decided it was cheaper to pay off families than to fix the Ford Pinto and it's super explosive nature.
Good, hopefully this will get apple to cover the laptops and repair them for free. The 2008, 2010 and 2011 all have dGPU issues, its ludicrous that apple refuses to acknowledge this issue and fix the affected computers.
You are parroting a myth. Do you know the cost to bring a class action?
The iMac's had the gpu issue also.
I had the same thing on my 2011 27" iMac -- the graphics issue appeared...and Apple refused to fix it for free because I had a 3rd party SSD installed in my machine. The repair cost me over $400 out of pocket. But it's fixed now, and they replaced it with a better 2GB card even.
I hate when people bring up the pinto issue. Studies have shown that the pinto was no more likely to explode on impact than any other similar sized car from the time period.
I've got a late 2001 15inch MBP that doesn't have any problem *crossing fingers*

I've been in a few class action lawsuits - which neither makes me a lawyer or an expert on CALs, but I pay attention... Micron ram price fixing, Apple monitor size false advertising, iTunes book sale price fixing, and a few others...

And if they are able to get Apple to take ownership of the problem and address it then they deserve to "win".In the end, the lawyers win.
