I think lots of people replaced say 3 year old batteries, and now they are going to use their phones for another 2-3 years. And without Apple's program, many of them would have waited until the battery is shot after 4 years, and then dumped their iPhone. (And I have no idea how much of a three or four year old battery can be recycled, but if useful recycling is possible then I'm quite sure my battery has been recycled).Last year, the cost of replacing an iPhone battery through Apple was lower. I think many people decided to replace batteries that were actually still OK (>80% for example). It led to 10x more replacements anyway. What's better, carbon-wise, using the battery until it's barely usable or replacing it too early for cheap? This is without regarding customers.
