I can reduce the thickness of my iPhone 4 to that of the iPhone 5 by simply removing the back panel :/
There's barely any structure added by the back panel in the first place. I'm sure the iPhone 5 has Something Neat about its new construction, but the difference in thickness doesn't really seem all that impressive.

Yeah the thickness isn't impressive they just removed the back glass I wish they would of maybe kept the same thickness and added a thick battery for more time

When in a dock, when in a shirt pocket, when in a pocket (unless your motor skills are challenged), when in a car dock, when it's next to you in a seat etc etc etc. Now You have to remove the headphones every time you do something else... that's some real cleaver design there Apple

docks have earphone plugs..
when phone is in pocket it is more convenient to have it upside down anyways..
wtf earphones in the car??

i agree that i like the old design simply because im used to it and its what makes the iphone different from the ipod touch

but this makes a lot more sense.

Assuming the leaks have been of real parts, the asymmetric speakers speaks volumes. If Jobs was alive such ugliness would have never been allowed. And that makes you wonder what other things have been allowed now one of the founder is 6 feet under.

Asymmetric speaker ports speaks to engineering taking precedent over design. And run of the mill engineers tends to think of what's possible vs what should be. If not pushed we tend to take the safe paths.

Another thing to consider is what is the raison d'être for the iphone going forward. It is to be the phone with the most new features? Is it the most beautiful phone that's a fashion icon? Or what? Right now I don't think that can be answered but I don't feel confident that the will be a clear definition of why the new iphone will be better than the old one.

Not giving a complete redesign or at least a bigger departure from the existing product suggests a lot. This isn't going to be a all new product but an incremental improvement. It's the safe choice which I think reflects the personality of the new head of the company.

The question is if idevices are going to take the incremental improvement path. Would they still generate the huge and increasing sales volume to sustains the stratospheric Apple profits and stock price? I for one think not. I think you'll see quite a few people starting to stick with their existing device (and this will not be limited to apple) for a few years. Just like most people do with their computers and other electronics.

You are wrong, Jobs has been reported to have been "DEEPLY" involved in this design. There is also only one speaker port on the bottom. The smaller one will be a mic. There are drilled holes because that is more symmetric than the current slits. If they stayed with slits, they wouldn't match. At least the size of the holes themselves are symmetric, just the amount isn't. Lesser of two evils when deciding to move the headphone jack to the bottom.

And stop innovating wont make your design better...

its not for the sake of change. the iphone 4 design is far from perfect. you know it. I know it.

In fact i would argue its one of the most unergonomic phones out there. The iphone 3G and the the original iphone just fit so much nicer in your hands.

Well, most of the iPods -specially the nano changed every year. And dont compare the iphone to the mac pro and the macbook pro.

Where have they stopped innovating? If these leaks turn out to be correct, and talking purely about design, there will be a unibody aluminium design with a new aspect ratio, improved dock design and a new location for the headphone jack. The only similar components from the previous generation would be the home button, sleep/wake button and volume/mute buttons. Good design requires step changes towards the ideal design. In theory, innovation will begin to slow unless the end-requirements ever change.

In terms of ergonomics, I agree with your comment. I got my original iPhone out of the box recently and instantly noticed how comfortable it was to hold. But Apple has always been about aesthetics, this will probably never change, and I personally feel that the unibody design with sharp edges does look better.

I think the iPod range changed so much in order to increase sales for the holiday period. Apple themselves proved that change for the sake of change isn't always beneficial when they removed the buttons from the iPod Shuffle and then put them back again.

Why not compare the iPhone to the computer lines? Apple computers have been around a lot longer than the phones and they're rate of design change has begun to slow as an optimal design is reached. This will happen to the phone if correct design practice is used.

iPhone 5 screen

Couldnt they have kept the same length of the iPhone 4s and just increase the screen withing the 4s length to a 4inch screen? Why did the whole phone stretch and not just the screen? Is it because it needed more space for battery?(new battery is longer)

I would have preferred the front glass to be flush with the case, like the back. Front/back looks asymmetrical compared to the 4S.

No amen from me. This is what this site is about. Why do you even come here around a time when you should know dam well this will be happening. Seems like you are getting yourself worked up about something silly, but hey , its your heart attack.

Macrumors site is about beating a dead horse? A horse that hasn't even been announced? Ok then, I hope they do a color comparison, a home button comparison, maybe another head phone jack comparison (just in case somebody missed the other 65 posts on it), oh and don't forget to compare the proximity sensors. When are they going to compare/measure the bezels? Until they compare the speaker grill holes I ain't buying this phone!!

This is what I have been dreading. If the front glass protrudes like that on the finished product, it represents a step backwards in aesthetics from the uncompromising symmetry/balance of the 4/4S. It seems like it will be a great device, but not an industrial-design classic like its predecessor.

For ***** sake Macrumors!!! Does anyone care about these leaks anymore? It's the same crap on every site. We know what it's going to look like already. The iphone has leaked!!! Ok we get it. Macrumors--Please stop comparing leaked iphone video/pic/specs/etc. WE GET IT!! same ****, taller phone. Can I get a amen from someone?

Apparently they do since they keep coming back to the MR site to see the leaks. If they didn't care about leaks, they probably wouldn't type macrumors.com into their address bar or hit that favorite button.

ximg.php

You know, people say a lot of things.

Question:
Why is the headphone jack on the bottom of the phone? Shouldn't it be on the top just like 3GS, 4, 4S?

My thinking is that it makes more sense to put it on the bottom.

If you have headphones connected, you don't have to flip it in your hand to put it in your pocket. You just put it in your pocket upside down with the lead coming straight out. When you want to pull it out of your pocket in a hurry, you don't have to fumble as much.

So much better in my opinion...

.

I really hope not. More megapixels would just bring more noise. Let's hope for a larger sensor and for a lens with a wider aperture (iPhone 4s has a f2.4 aperture). That will bring huge improvements to your photos, more megapixels will not

Good point. I'd hate to fall into the pixel trap. Another innovative feature could be motion stabilization as in the floating lens of the new Nokia. Internals will wow me more than this shell is my point.

i really must say that bottom is down right ugly. and ive never said that before at a apple product and i buy them since 2007.
Bleh...oh well i buy it anyways.

I agree, the bottom is pretty ugly. Not that you'd look at it much, but it is surprisingly ugly from a design point of view. It looks cheap.

To those not getting the "tall" screen...

It only feels "tall" because you are used to the 3:2 aspect ratio. Many phones including the Galaxy SIII have 16:9 screens that are just as "tall." All Apple is doing is going with a more standard 16:9 aspect ratio (even if it is 1136x640 vs 1280x720, it's still 16:9).

I guess I'm supposed to be excited but I'm just not. It's like knowing what your wrapped Christmas gift sitting under the tree is before you un-wrap it.

In saying this, there is still a part of me that believes that this has all been part of the most elaborate ruse in corporate history, and that Apple will surprise us next week. I still find it hard to believe that Jony and Steve have been working on this project for two years to simply then give us a thinner & longer 4S.

The thinness thing is so silly. Why to they have to keep making the **** thing thinner when the battery STILL doesn't last a full day? Why not keep it the same size and fill the rest of the space with a larger battery?

I'm sorry but if that is the real iPhone 5 it just looks stupid. Why just make it just taller, why not a bit wider? What was wrong with a 4.3 screen?

It looks "lanky"

The iPhone 4S looks better.

I'm curious on how many new customers have the 4S compared to the 3GS and 4 as this may impact this years sales due to 2-year contracts in North America and any other nation which has contracts. It seemed the 4S had the most sales of any iPhone launch to date (especially given new launches in countries that didn't have iPhone's).

I'm curious as this may [negatively] impact sales as customers will either wait for next years model or [some may] pay the full price for an off contract device. Either way, I can't imagine the "5" surpassing the 4S in global sales. Any one have exact figures? Thanks!

I'm currently on a iPhone 4 and have been waiting to get out from under AT&T this whole time. My contract was up in July and I preordered the iPhone 4 and received it a day early. Anyone at the beginning of the iPhone 4 that didn't upgrade to the 4S will be all over this iPhone 5.

Are people really upset at what the bottom looks like? You trolls with "Steve would never allow this". You people are ones who just got your 1st Mac a year ago and never owned a Mac with PowerPC. Real Apple fans don't complain about stupid nonsense. "the bottom is ugly! Ugh." Just ****! Apple is doing fine. The design is fine. Stop taking Apple for granted. If you don't like Apple buy POS Sony Ericsson would you

Some kind of radical (but superficial) redesign for its own sake (especially on a device that “becomes the app” and you focus on the screen alone) is neither good engineering nor necessary to appeal to consumers.

I guess my main problem is that I never liked the starting concept that was the iPhone 4. It doesn't read industrial, sleek, or chic to me – something that can be said for almost all other Apple products. My Air, Pro, Shuffle (3rd Gen.), and even my magic mouse all give me tech lust. Not so for my phone! The SIII sort of does it for me, but I hate its OS and materials. #firstworldproblems.
