Couldnt they have kept the same length of the iPhone 4s and just increase the screen withing the 4s length to a 4inch screen? Why did the whole phone stretch and not just the screen? Is it because it needed more space for battery?(new battery is longer)

I would also be a fan of this. I love the size of the current generation.

When in a dock, when in a shirt pocket, when in a pocket (unless your motor skills are challenged), when in a car dock, when it's next to you in a seat etc etc etc. Now You have to remove the headphones every time you do something else... that's some real cleaver design there Apple

As someone who uses the headphones a lot for phone calls, not music, I tend to agree. I sometimes charge the phone in a dock while working but keep the headphones plugged in for phone calls. Same for in car use. (No, I don't use Bluetooth......)

Not a big deal I guess, just something to get used to.

I said it before and I'll say it again...I really hope that Apple is playing everyone here by intentionally leaking fake parts out, and they'll actually reveal a new iPhone next week that looks different than this.

It makes no sense whatsoever that this will not be the next iPhone what with all the part leaks and videos out there.*Take a second and think about it.

I personally thought that there'd be a chance that these leaks were orchestrated, but just because Tim Cook said he was "doubling down on secrecy" doesn't mean the lowly Chinese factory worker won't go and steal an iPhone front glass part. I stopped thinking these leaks were orchestrated maybe 3 or so weeks ago.

Two easy steps.

1. Make the holes symmetric*

Overall I am really underwhelmed by this design. THIS is what they come up with after 2 whole years of designing it? a slightly refined iphone 4 design?

I would much rather asymmetry allowing the speaker to be louder rather then symmetry which would result in a quieter speaker.*

Pretty sure 99% of the people complaining about the asymmetry of the bottom grilles, dullness and ugliness of the design etc. will end up buying the phone anyway.

compare it to the Galaxy s3

compare it to the Galaxy S3! I bet it's still thicker. Apple is so far behind Android in software innovations, it wouldn't be surprising to see them locked out of some cool things because of IP owned by the companies they are peeing on now.

8.6 mm > 7.6 mm

Not feeling the candy bar design at all. Will wait to see the final before deciding to jump to it or the new lumia or sIII.

At least with iOS there's one version. With Android there's over 200+ software versions. This why Android needs to just release 1 software verison to cover every product that runs it just like how Apple does with iOS (3GS, 4, 4S, iPod touch all use the current version of iOS)

Apple really just needs to eliminate the thick top and bottom bezels to match the sizes of the bezels on the sides. Fill in all of this space with a larger screen.

No point in making a beautiful phone if it's going to break if you drop it once, cause then you just end up putting it in a thick, ugly case....

By what measure? And if so, it will surely disappoint.

I could have sworn that is exactly what people said about the iPhone 4S, and it cleaned up the competition easily and made everyone rush out and develop shoddy wanna be Siri's

Camera?

I haven't heard a peep about what's to be expected with the next gen's camera. I REALLY hope that it's something special that  is holding close to their vest until SHOWTIME!

Disappoint who? You and the other tech nerds who are looking for some unnecessary redesign? You must be extremely unhappy with Apple selling the same notebook designs for 4-5 years at a time...

Me and a lot of others. A phone that is simply taller and not wider is a stupid idea and a lot of others think so. Sure, they will sell lots of them but I continue to believe that this will go down as a watershed moment in the smartphone landscape where we will see more and more people jumping ship and see the insane growth of the iPhone slow more and more. It will go down as one of Apple's biggest missteps IMHO.

I hope that Tim proves me wrong next week and convinces me that this is really a good idea, but at the moment I can't imagine it.

By the way, I'm a huge Apple fan and own multiple Macs and iPads and I want to like the new iPhone, but this redesign is just killing me. I just don't get it. I hope I do on the 12th.

With the iPhone, they keep the best stuff on the inside.

It will be simple to determine if this was the most anticipated iPhone ever. If they sell more of them than they sold of the 4S, it was. If they sell fewer, it wasn't.

If that happens I'll eat my words and my hat. I think what a lot of people fail to understand is how much the smartphone market has changed in the last year. There are a bunch of really good phones out now and it was way easier for the 4S to dominate when it came out. With the new Windows 8 phones coming out soon, things will get really interesting.

I'm still shocked that they have not at least gone with a proportionately larger 4" screen.

I guess if I'm charging _and_ need headphones, I simply use a cable, easy access to either end for headphones.

Hahaha, nice.

No kidding ... how about some optic and low light improvements, maybe a better flash? I'd like to see a nice bump to the FFC too. Our iPhones have become our cameras for 90% of our photographs now, so I'm very interested in camera upgrades!

The glass isn't flush because it's not screwed in. The glass should be level.

4/4S...same body.

The mute switch is in a slightly different location on the 4S. For that reason, my case (and many bumper cases) will not work well on both. You can still use one, but the mute switch is harder to pull. This makes it very tough to shop for cases online because Chinese sellers are the cheapest, but they always say "iPhone case 4 4S 4G G apple ipod", then they claim it works on both.

Good job.

Better speakers maybe? I know most people don't care about this, but I really do.

Software? I'd give you that the flagship Android phones are now ahead of Apple in terms of hardware, but software is another story.

While Android has made big leaps and bounds, they are still very far behind. The main things I want from a smartphone OS is stability, reliability, and consistent performance. Even with my gf's old 3GS everything runs rock solid compared to the latest and greatest from Android. (And I'm pulling for them btw, I like free software far more than proprietary closed-source stuff.)

The areas I think iOS needs to work on are App switching (double pressing home is just BAD). And then all the proprietary restrictions on streaming and printing (unlikely those will go away...but one can dream.) Oh, and it would be nice to have more control over individual processes running as well as a control panel to monitor their use--good for security and battery optimizing.

Do any of you really like this new design? Seriously?

Yes, not that I really care. I don't get why people are switching platforms just because of the design. Maybe that's why those people are using iPhones in the first place, as a fashion accessory.

You bet wrong. But I guess thickness doesn't matter now, hmm?

is is just me or does the white "so called new iphone" have 2 extra holes than the black one ?

I'm pretty sad that Apple still does not realize that a large number of people want 4.5 inch and bigger phones. Sure 4 inches is decent; for current iPhone users. But what about the people that got accustomed to big screen Android devices? Even the Nokia 920 is shaping up to be better than this leaked iPhone and I dislike windows phones. But Microsoft is coming around for me with Windows Phone 8 and I thought Apple would do the same.
Apple better pull a rabbit out of that iPhone come September 12th to make me jump ship from Android. If I had to jump it would be with Windows.

it's you. The white shows the holes. They blend in on the black one.

A lot of people DON'T want a 4.5 inch or bigger screen. You do, but that doesn't mean you are the norm. I can't find one of my friends that are aching for a Samsung S3 sized phone. They all say the same thing. How am I going to fit that in my pocket? I am actually quite content with the size.
