Once one is holding it in one's hand it will become what it is, the most beautiful phone in the world. :)

Question: Does anyone know of another unibody, metal mobile phone?

You are wrong, Jobs has been reported to have been "DEEPLY" involved in this design. There is also only one speaker port on the bottom. The smaller one will be a mic. There are drilled holes because that is more symmetric than the current slits. If they stayed with slits, they wouldn't match. At least the size of the holes themselves are symmetric, just the amount isn't. Lesser of two evils when deciding to move the headphone jack to the bottom.

And there can be no change after someone dies? Your arguments about the hole is exactly what Jobs would not have done.

Why the absolutism around here?

Lets compared shall we?

Iphone 4. They decide to go with a difficult manufacturing process that required foxconn to buy special machines to make. The antenna was flawed but they went with it anyhow because they wanted that metal band around the edge look.

Iphone 5 according to you, the hole are there as lesser of evils. Yeah that sounded like the Jobs who once build a factory where he specified what color each machine was painted.

Speaker Grill

Im not liking the Uneven Speaker things, i hope Apple does not implement it that way

changes are too subtle given the fact that iphone 4 came almost more then 2 years back...until you gonna watch it upclose its gonna look just like a taller iphone 4...i dont agree with the point that the iPhone 4 design was more or less perfect and so the changes now will just be some refinement of it...nothing can be perfect..anything no matter how good could be topped...after almost 2 and half yrs apple should have come up with something more radical...i also don't buy that steeve jobs was closely involved with this design.....well i seriously hope that i change my mind after i actually hold it in my hands...but i'll be buying it regardless..cause i am a FANBOY;)

it's you. The white shows the holes. They blend in on the black one.

A lot of people DON'T want a 4.5 inch or bigger screen. You do, but that doesn't mean you are the norm. I can't find one of my friends that are aching for a Samsung S3 sized phone. They all say the same thing. How am I going to fit that in my pocket? I am actually quite content with the size.

Funny you say that as the S3 just topped the iPhone as the best selling phone in the US. I'd say you have friends who aren't normal.

You know who likes big phones? Old folks like my parents who just got a smartphone. At 3.7" they're regretting not getting a bigger one. Also, kids...games, and videos and such. And then there's the whole business crowd who'd like to be able to take notes...

People used to make this dumb argument(not insulting you, just the argument) more, but then the Nook took off, then the Kindle Fire....and now whadya know, the Note was a crazy hit, despite what people like you said...even back to the old Evo, the first "big" phone that now seems rather normal, you had people making your same argument, "I don't know anyone who wants that big a phone!"

Even the Note 2 isn't near as big as many calculators and somehow people manage to take those everywhere.

People want a mid-sized device...how many millions and millions of phones and tablets have to sell before you'll understand???

I have this sneaking suspicion you'll come around just as soon as its has a little Apple on the back.

Whatever gets you through the night, as John Lennon said.

True. I can't wait to see the new screen. It's the one think that hasn't been leaked and I think it's going to be a barn burner.

Unless you get a corp discount from your carrier preorder from Apple. ATT and VZW seem to always fudge up preorders. I'm letting the UPS/FedEx guy bring me mine. No waiting in line, which is how I like it.

1) Get a dock with a headphone port on the bottom and built-in. You'll need a new one because of the new connector anyway.
2) It will be easier to access music controls, the slider and the end call button by only partially exposing the phone.
3) Why would you need headphones plugged in when it's in a car dock?

1) Yes. Doesn't change the fact that I need to move the headphone jack more often - that's rather stupid.

2) ...and harder to see who's calling and notifications...

3) Actually it's not even a dock, but a cup holder. My iPhone fits nicely there and it's perfect with the plug on top.

I really hope Apple presents us something other than what has been leaked so far, because these things (incremental hardware update + updated design) are not really convincing enough for me. The competition looks a bit more interesting at the moment, not really the Samsung S3, but I think Nokia is doing remarkably well at the moment. It would have been my first iPhone to buy and I almost unconditionally planned to buy it, but I'll wait what the 12th of September shows us. I'm not wanting to be pessimistic, I have high hopes that we're going to be surprised.

I agree. If this indeed is going to be the new design, chances are I am mostly switching from my iphone to the Lumia 920. The hardware looks top notch and Windows phone is a pretty good OS as well - the only thing that might hold me back will be the damn ecosystem thing ; if I do end up buying an iphone with this rumored design, I might be doing it grudgingly. Let's hope Apple has an ace or two up its sleeve..

...I hope that Tim proves me wrong next week and convinces me that this is really a good idea, but at the moment I can't imagine it...

Given what has happened in the last years' worth of Apple presentations/events, it seems unlikely Tim will be introducing the new iPhone. He seems content to hand off those responsibilities to Phil Schiller. I would actually like to hear him introduce it, having gotten used to Apple's CEO doing major product introductions.

(edited to provide slightly more context)

As someone who uses the headphones a lot for phone calls, not music, I tend to agree. I sometimes charge the phone in a dock while working but keep the headphones plugged in for phone calls. Same for in car use. (No, I don't use Bluetooth......)

Not a big deal I guess, just something to get used to.

Sure this is not THE deal-breaker. But it's just more complicated (and in my opinion rather dumb), but apparently we're a small minority...

How do you figure that? It's pretty much the same phone but taller and a tiny bit thinner. Woopdedoo!

new quad core new back made of metal not glass ,bigger screen, bigger battery, prob better front camera is likely, etc etc

Those who don't plug them in and out 700 times in one day?

The point is, Apple has always been a company that thinks of the big picture and not the small market of people. Most people put their phone in their pocket and having the headphone jack on the bottom makes it easiest to pull out of your pocket and not fray the headphone cable.

If you want something to satisfy your needs get a different phone. Apple cares to the majority.

Is it me, or have there been more leaks and mockups for this iPhone than for any previous models in years past?

This leaked so much, a Chinese company made an Android phone from this mockup already, it's called the Goophone. This is now a Chinese knockoff phone... maybe that's what it is to begin with.

I want to believe apple can still keep a secret and they aren't getting sloppy in so many ways.
