So I'm a big Apple fan who just upgraded to an iPhone 4 from a dumbphone.

I see many of you complaining about notifications. Since I don't know any different (coming from a dumbphone) could you please explain the problem you have with iOS's notification scheme, and your proposed solutions (what you'd like for it to do)

Thanks!

The problem most have is that it pops up in the middle of your screen and you cant do anything without closing it. I personally dont have much of a problem with it.

They are probably having a hard time delivering devices due to the situation in Japan. Waiting until fall gives the suppliers time to regroup. Makes sense.

How is a cloud based system going to work when bandwidth limits for cell phone data is low, and overage fees are high

It needs to be a solution that can work perfectly without any data connection.

Imagine
* at it's simplest, a sync from iTunes which allows you to also specify your documents folder just like we do with music or photos (all, or newest, last modified, or perhaps even file types).
* Now expand it to allow you to specify the sync settings from the iPhone OR from iTunes.
* Now add wifi.
* set it to autosync every 30 mins (different settings for local wifi, random wifi, 3G)
* let it sync over the internet if I tell it to
* add push notifications.

So far all of that ignores storing in the data centre. And it doesn't have your iPad/iPhone pretending to have all your data, then grabbing it remotely if requested.

I'd like MobileMe to backup my entire computer if possible. If my computer explodes I want to be able to plug in a new computer and restore everything. I want to be able to find a file remotely even if my Mac is turned off - perhaps the initial iPhone/iPad interface just says "more documents" or "more photos" which requires a data connection.

I'd like to avoid having my iPhone doing an automatic background sync while I'm on 3G... I don't need my smart playlist of "least recently heard 3 star songs" to download a new song each time I listen to one song in the list.

If the phone wants data connection all the time I'd rather avoid it. About the only thing I'd find worthwhile would be for it to stop me opening a file if it's been updated since the local copy was made.

Not to mention that there is no history of notifications. For instance, I'm forever closing notifications because of all the games my wife has installed and plays on it but because I close them as they appear, there is no way for her to know what those were.

"Cloud"... wow, that really stuck, finally. What is it, 15-20 years since the name was introduced? :D

On a more serious note, I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one concerned with leaving all my storage in the hands of a company like Apple.

Voice of reason. Cloud won't mean the end of local storage, just networked storage of selected files, with options on updating. At home and want to source a document? No problem. And I spend a lot of time with WIFI access, so a choice just to sync with WIFI won't stress my monthly allowance.

Agreed.

And since Steve Jobs personally said "2011 will be the year of the iPad 2" I don't think we'll be seeing an iPad 3.
Really hoping to be blown away by iOS 5.

I can't say whether your administrators need the updates but, from what you're saying..
1. The iPhone 5 updates aren't reported to be as drastic? You must be kidding. What is your definition of 'drastic' then?
2. So what is the iPad 3 reported to have that is 'drastic'?

Meaning ... they could be using the iPhone 3gs and wouldn't care, as long as it were on Verizon. They don't feel that they need the newest and best phones, just because there are more features. Their needs for 'drastic' change would be, say, if Apple implemented a feature called, 'send this kid to detention' ;) From a technological point of view, the iPhone 5 changes do seem pretty awesomely drastic. If the NFC and A5 deals are true, I want one.
iPad 3's 'drastic' would be the major shift in release date. Whatever features it would have, the release date of the first month of school would be enough for the phones to be off the wall with requests saying, "why didn't you guys see this coming, we should have waited 5 months to buy iPads. You're all stoopid". :p

I don't mind if they're pushing the launch a bit, but I do hope that they will refresh or implement a slightly more different interface, as the home screen and most menu options still look pretty much like the first iPhone. While there's nothing wrong with it (why fix it if it ain't broke), I think many people out there do like something new.

wow, my district already cut 17 full-time teacher positions and many more will be going this week after the state budget is released.

my county is also cutting teachers, and the neighboring county is now making AP's back in to teachers to save costs and jobs. They are lucky to have gotten those ipad 2's!

On the ios5 and i5 note, they will be out on regular release. This is just a good plain ol PR leak by Apple.

Honestly I think the grid icon look of iOS is the best there is. Sure some changes could be made, but for the most part, I like the way it looks. It's taken Google this long to come up with something even remotely decent, and it still isn't as user friendly as iOS. Outside of better notifications, I hope they keep the UI as is.

iPad 3 not coming this year

In their presentation of the new iPad, Stev Jobs clearly said that 2011 would be the year of iPad 2. Because of that statement I don't think that a new ipad will be coming out. A new iPod touch will come out and that may be bigger than the current one (a 4 inch may be possible if the new iPhone will be bigger).

IUn regards to IOS 5 delaying until September. I doubt it as the nnew iPhone is rumoured to have a bigger screen. because of this the OS has to be updated in order to account for the new screen size and resolution. And a simple 0.1 update would not address it properly.

I do think that IOS 5 will be a bigger update, Tim Cook mentioned in the Annual shareholders meeting that they are loooking at the prepaid segment to further grow (especially in China and other parts of the world).. So I expect them to start adding differnt form factors. So iOS will evolve as well.

Apple has been working on independent resolution for a while now. It may be that both Lion and iOS will incorporate it.

What "could" happen is that iOS 5 is not implemented in non iPhone 5 devices until September. That happened last year when iPad didn't get the multitasking until fall. iOS 5 may only be introduced in the iPhone while the kinks are worked out for all the other devices/

I really hope wwdc is going to focus on computers rather than its IOS toys.

Hey Stella . . . I DON'T KNOW. And guess what, no one else here really does. But I'm guessing Apple DOES know and they DO have some sort of strategy in light of whatever challenges there are. I'm pretty sure they've got it more or less figured out, since they're a key part of the industry, whereas you and I are not. Apple pays people a lot of money to figure out **** like this. We're not really involved.

WWDC will focus on how to lead in progressive, forward-looking markets and how to develop for them. Macs may or may not be a focus, but you can be sure that "iOS toys" *will* be a focus, because that is the direction in which everyone is moving. If you don't like the way computing is shaping up in 2011 and for the next 3-5 years, simply tell Apple to go back in time to June 2007 and *not* make an iPhone. Cool?

Please drop the "iOS toys" baloney. These "toys" are what everyone will be using - and other players are desperate to make their name in this game. These "toys" are rapidly catching up to the power of your average computer, and additionally they are superior at leveraging mobility and ease of use.

Welcome to 2011. Seriously.

Personally, I like the organization of iOS. It's easy to read and navigate on such a small device. on an iPad, it would be nice to have the option of something more like Lion and MacOSX. I really dislike Android because it looks like such a mess half the time. I'm sure you could get use to it, but I don't like "getting use to" an OS.

Either way... it looks like iOS5 and Lion are going to both be moves in a new direction and more functionality. Should be cool to see what comes.

iPods are updated in September towards the end of the student sale,

Tiny correction. iPods have firmly moved to after the end of the student sale. But a good 2 weeks.

Why? Because then there is no confusion over the detail that the new ones aren't eligible for the sale, which is done to dump mass stock before releasing new ones.

As for iMacs, it seemed for a while that they were going for a fall/early winter release to go with the holiday season. Makes sense as the iMac is the more 'family' machine. They might stick with that, at least for major updates. The Pros and Minis however are still a crap shoot on guessing releases.

So how is that much different from them releasing new iPads 11 months later... like they just did? All the iPads in use didn't suddenly stop working.

folks are trained for the one year cycle. That's what's different. So businesses/schools calculate the cost effectiveness of such projects based on a roughly 12 year 'usage' assuming they will get the next thing when it comes out. Suddenly there is the perception they didn't really get their money's worth when it jumps to every six months. Even if the thing still works. Because part of the point of the project is for students to be up on the 'latest tech' and now they are not.

So the sources are Gruber who stated it was a guess and TechCrunch who are, well, TechCrunch.

Indeed. TC doesn't not have a solid rep for their sources (which are often copying other folks guesses and not admitting it, or out of their butts)

I'm not sure.. I do think the iPhone 5 SHOULD be delayed a few months on their part as the iPhone 4 is still selling like crazy and they have not tapped out that market.

Again, folks are trained on the one year cycle, especially for the iphones. If you delay it will start all kinds of rumors about defects, production issues etc. Even an iphone 5 that is just a processor bump and maybe a 1MP camera bump it better than the negative PR of what could be wrong with the iphone that they had to delay it and why isn't Apple telling us the truth about what the problem is

Personally, I like the organization of iOS. It's easy to read and navigate on such a small device. on an iPad, it would be nice to have the option of something more like Lion and MacOSX.

I am fine with the UI etc and I personally do not want the ipad to be more a computer. BUT what I would like to see is common storage so that, for example, if I download an attached PDF and decide to switch PDF reader programs the new one can see the file on my ipad even if I can't go there myself. Instead of it being wrapped in app data and isolated as many programs do (and don't always have file sharing). Also, better auto file sharing and backups by individual program. Say I have to restore my ipad/iphone for whatever reason. Let me restore app data by the app rather than all or nothing. With those two things I'd be more than happy.

They have a terrible track record. I think the fact that they're still going with the iPad 3 release this fall completely invalidates anything they're saying.

This.

iOS 5 release with iPhone 5 a few weeks after preview at wwdc.

iOS 5 for iPad released some time in the fall..

That's It people. Stick with common sense.

i want what the "reliable sources" are smoking.

jokes aside, this is terrible. too long of a wait.
and apple better not skimp my 4th gen touch on features, i want FULL iOS 5 support.

Got it!

You want it ALL, You want it NOW!

.....oh, and for FREE! (you didn't mention, but I am pretty sure)

You tell'em..............

I'm not saying this will happen, but I just wanted to point out a possible senario if Apple wants a later release date for the iPad.

But then that leaves the spring without a huge release item to keep the stock prices nice and high.

Plus it means either shifting the traditional Sept "Music/iPod" event or having two major items releasing at the same time to create chaos at the stores.

don't see Apple doing either.

if they flip music to spring then they would be releasing a new product and potentially giving it away to students which I don't see happening. Sorry but Apple just doesn't strike me as that giving to anyone. I mean they are the company that doesn't give student discounts to high school kids and no individual education discount of any kind (outside of that summer promo) on any ipod or ipad.

Cloud based services are a bad idea for the consumer. Essentially you become a renter of products that run off the companies servers which at any moment can be taken offline for whatever reason they please.

No thanks.

Maybe cloud based services off of consumer's computers but no way in hell is cloud computing off of a corporation's servers a good idea.
