I don't really buy that rumor. Apple rarely to never does a six month cycle on anything and shifting the iPad to the fall means no major product to help keep the stock price nice and high.

Plus an iPad on top of the new pods means more chaos for the retail staff, which I can't see them doing.

If anything I could see them shifting the iPads to late Jan or early Feb next go around and moving the spring laptops closer to the start of their annual back to school promo

And what about production. 18 iPad models and they're starting to catch up but what about components? They have some inventory now and are desperately looking for suppliers to replace what Japan won't be able to deliver for awhile. I do believe (and hope) there will be an iP5 with the phone and the ios5 announced who knows - end June - preorders open end June, delivery starts mid-July and ios5 on the way. Remember, Apple released iPad1 and it was months before those iPads could update to ios4. They stayed with ios3.1 for quite some time.

Who made the rule that both the software and the hardware have to be released on the same date?

I guess this never happened with the mac lineup. The hardware was always released before and after the software.

Apple has been releasing a new major version of iOS with every new iPhone since the beginning.

I think iOS5 should be a good update. I think of Apple's updates along the same lines of Intel's tick tock, but alternating between a bigger upgrade on the hardware and a bigger upgrade of the software. Just think about the last 4 upgrades - 1st both, 2nd (3G) -hardware, 3rd (3GS) -software, 4th (iP4) -hardware. Therefore I think the iPhone 5 will be very similar to the iPhone 4 but iOS5 will be a good improvement.

Improve the notification system and make sure it doesn't slow down iPhone 4s. I promise I'll update my iPhone when my contract is up, so don't make an OS that slows down my phone. Just something I can have on my lock screen that can be pulled up via a triple click.

Oh and some way to answer text messages without leaving the app would be awesome.

Cloud? Umm optional. I like having quick access to my stuff when I don't have signal (like when I travel).

Oh and speed up in app web.

Also cure cancer too.

Well you'll probably have to buy more in the fall anyways. I mean, have you ever seen public school textbooks?

:) We're getting rid of textbooks and using straight up e-books. If the student does something to their iPad, then a: insurance covers it, b: students cover the damages. Without tons of other books to scratch them up, plus smart covers to keep them safe, the iPads will stay in nice condition. We've been "experimenting" (if you can call it that) on 5th graders to see how they hold up. None have been broken, badly scratched, or badly damaged. Sure, a few minor dings and stuff, but they are gentle to them.

Why? Will they do less than they did when you bought them?
No, but the teachers will definitely become irritated because a new one was released the month school starts if this rumor holds true. :p

Jony Ive comes in to Steve Jobs office and says Ipad 3 is ready to go. Steve is like uh....we can't release it just yet, remember those 1000 units we sold to that school in MN? We don't wanna piss them off so let's hold up the entire rest of the world until next March. Yeah RIGHT! LOL
I lol'd hard :D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

Getting mad doesn't impact apple's plans, unfortunately.
Nope, but it impacts our technology's and project's health ;)

yeah your right. Apple should alter their release schedules based on how mad their customers get when a new device is released. Especially since the device this customer bought still works exactly like they expected it to when they purchased it.
It'd just be the fact that it would be released at the start of a school year.

If the iPad 2 wasn't what you needed, why not wait?
There's no time to wait for us anymore, we're going paperless dang it! Haha, no more fixing those printers.

...the same way Apple will probably release the iphone 5 a few months after the Verizon iphone 4? :)
:) Funny, because we actually got iPhone 4 Verizons for all of the administrators. We don't forsee needing the features on the iPhone 5s when they are released. Luckily, the changes aren't reported to be as drastic as the iPad 3's so there should be nothing that any of them desire (or understand) in the iPhone 5. (I'm assuming all that will change is the size of the phone and the A5 will be used in it, and maybe some NFC stuff)

There will be an iPad launch this fall (not with iPods) and it will be a minor upgrade, much the same as we have with the Macbook/MBPros now. The aim is to replace the MacBooks with iPads (for the mainstream market at least) and as you know a year is a long term in computer terms. iPad 2 second release update will include NFC to be compatible with the iPhone 5 to allow for sharing and features to been seen with iOS5. The iPhone five will see summer release on schedule.

Must note I dont have privileged info but watch come time.:apple:

Just what we don't need is more posts likes this. You are just making crap up.

Hummmm.... Honestly... makes no sense for iOS5 to be released in the fall unless there's a "big thing" they're working on.

But, they could do a 4.X release for the new iPhone in June, then a big release just before the Holiday season to really pump iOS device sales.

I guess we'll see.

I do think it's funny that people make the argument that Apple won't release certain new products because they don't want to make other users mad. That's just ridiculous. Tech people who care wait until they get what they want, and non-tech consumers just buy what they want. Heck... if most people worried about being outdated, then most people would never buy anything for fear of being outdated.

Agreed.

And since Steve Jobs personally said "2011 will be the year of the iPad 2" I don't think we'll be seeing an iPad 3.
Really hoping to be blown away by iOS 5.

I can't say whether your administrators need the updates but, from what you're saying..
1. The iPhone 5 updates aren't reported to be as drastic? You must be kidding. What is your definition of 'drastic' then?
2. So what is the iPad 3 reported to have that is 'drastic'?

Cloud?
Nooooo!
What about the trillions of people with iPods and wifi-only iPads, or those on networks with limited bandwidth allowance? There's going to be outrage from networks and users if iOS gains Cloud features.

I love when people think things are delayed even though no announcement dates were ever made

It's not unusual to expect that since the last 3 releases were done in June, this 4th release would be done in the same timeframe and that if it isn't, then something is up.

The only warranted outrage would be if it loses offline features. Gaining options that you don't have to use if you don't want to or can't shouldn't warrant any outrage.

Heh. No LTE, no NFC, no bigger screen, no antenna fix, and now no iOS upgrade? What's the point in releasing an iPhone at all this year?

Actually, rumors suggest: no LTE, yes NFC, 4" screen, same form factor but tweaked design, and iOS 5 updated later than usual.

I'm not understanding your point.

hmmm some android phone it is then, and a new iPad for my iOS pleasure at some point. getting tired of the same UI after owning 3 iPhone generations

Did you buy your phone to stare at the UI or actually do things with it? If the UI remains consistent, it's a far better device to do things with rather than to just look at.

Should something like this happen (and who's to say it wouldn't besides Apple, Inc themselves) I'm thinking about in it terms of product release consistency and what it means to Apple.

During an interview with Steve Jobs once, I remember him saying point-blank something to the effect of "if people know when a new product is coming out, they stop buying our current product almost immediately"

Wouldn't it make sense for Apple to stop releasing products, most notably the iOS devices, in an order that wasn't go easy to guess? We know when the iPhone is near: the summer. iPod touch: September-ish and if it continues with iPad, March/April is the timeframe there. It's not secret that even without MacRumors or any other tech blog, we know when something is coming. The bigger question most of the time is what.

But i'm rambling... this just crossed my mind. It may very well be complete speculation. Or if there is a delay, just that big of a feature.

I'm sorry but that pattern doesn't really make sense...
3G to 3GS was a much bigger hardware upgrade than original iPhone to 3G, it just kept the same physical appearance.
iOS 4 was a HUGE software upgrade, bigger than any other one so far. The iPhone 4 was also a huge hardware upgrade at the same time.

I don't really see much of a pattern there... :)

I could see the potential to release a new iPhone without a new iOS. Perhaps they will integrate all the iOS platforms at one time? With the success of the iPad, I could see the need to keep every device on the same version.

It seems weird now that the new iPhone gets iOS 5, but the new iPad has to wait until fall.

Cloud media will cost you ...

So, Cloud music, cloud videos, cloud photos, cloud data - and limited monthly bandwidth data plans (even on land based cable/dsl lines) - 2GB is less than an HD movie, and that's ATT's plan. Comcast limits at 250GB: sounds like a lot, until they say, "Oh, it's 25 full HD movies..." less than one a day.

If the future is network based media is to replace satellite and cable TV, over the air and satellite radio, the the monthly limits must disappear. And the data rates must be adequate.

Don't see that happening right now, do you?

Considering that we're one of the first schools in MN to adopt the iPad as a learning tool, and that there are many other schools that are going to wait a year or so to do the same thing, Apple sure does care, they even send representatives and stuff like that from time to time, lucky for us ;)

They might not care enough to change launch dates, but they care somewhat.

No, but it would cause an uproar among our faculty. I know they'll keep working, as you do too, but the other students and staff only want the newest and best. We're on a 3 year contract for iPads, and if they announce new iPads the month school starts, the complaints will never end. One year into owning them is a bit more feasible, however.

No, Apple doesn't really care. You bought 1,500 units. Do you have any idea how many they sell per day. Uproar among faculty? Why because the iPad that the district is giving them to use is not the latest one? If your faculty and students only want the best, then why not just buy it themselves. Get over yourself. Apple does not care and they shouldn't. You are not a special customer.

What I'm seeing is the exact opposite. Enforce monthly limits because the future is network based.

I can't see monthly limits going away unless there are big changes in the industry. Data plans are too lucrative for service providers. I think what we might see are gradual increases to the data caps. So instead of 4GB per month, maybe in the next few years that gets increased to 10GB or 15GB. Not sure how soon that would happen as the vast majority of people don't even come close to hitting 4GB (or 2, for that matter ...)

I also don't see an iPad 3 in fall of this year. It just doesn't make any sense right now. The competition hasn't even begun to catch up yet. The iPad 2 is strong enough on its own to last for a year.

But, I could see iOS 5 getting released in the fall. iOS 5 will give both the iPhone 5 and the iPad 2 a nice shot in the arm which can last all the way through the holiday season. Maybe a little preview of it right will come out around the time the iPhone 5 is released to keep people hungry.

Please Explain...

So I'm a big Apple fan who just upgraded to an iPhone 4 from a dumbphone.

I see many of you complaining about notifications. Since I don't know any different (coming from a dumbphone) could you please explain the problem you have with iOS's notification scheme, and your proposed solutions (what you'd like for it to do)

Thanks!
