What should the family have done? In a situation like that, is it always a mistake to "go get help" rather than stay with the vehicle?

Mr. Kim was apparently trying to leave markers for rescuers to spot. They just didn't find them in time.

Perhaps others can learn a lesson from this tragedy.

:(

Is this any relation to our own Arnold Kim (aka Arn)?

This is the most ignorant thing I have heard....you are like the person that asks a Jewish person you meet if they know someone else just because they are Jewish.

I hope you ask every "Smith" you meet if they know or are related to every other "Smith" in the world.

Us Jews all know each other. Gay people do too.

EDIT: Forgot which thread I was replying too. I am sorry if I seemed insensitive with that light mood. RIP.

In this initial news release, the presiding officer broke down when reporting they'd found Kim's body. This is such a gut wrenching, sad time. Our thoughts and prayers are for the family.

The experts say that it's almost always a mistake, but there was a good article in today's SF Chronicle talking about the family that got snowbound in Nevada back in '92. Her feeling is that because her family was stuck in flat, desert land, it was a reasonable chance to take for her husband to leave the car. But the terrain Kim faced was so difficult that it probably was nearly impossible for him to make it anywhere where he could get help.

From msnbc.com:

Searchers told NBC News that they located Kim on Tuesday and at one point they were able to make direct contact with him. They explored ways to lower a medic to the area, they said, but it was not immediately clear whether that attempt ultimately failed or was too late to save Kim.

Rescuers frantically tried to work out ways to reach Kim in the impassable snow-jammed area over the next hours, Anderson said, but they couldn’t make it in time.

It looks like he was alive when they first spotted him.

From msnbc.com:

Was this the article you go that from? If so, they've just updated it and it now says the following:

Rescue workers had located Kim some time before they announced that they had reached his body at 12:03 p.m. PT at a drainage area called Big Windy Creek, searchers told NBC News. They even made direct contact with him and tried to lower a medic to treat him, they said, but it was not immediately clear whether they were blocked by the conditions or were simply too late.

They've removed the reference to having made contact as early as yesterday.

You're right about the update (less than 20 minutes ago), but the MSNBC statement that rescuers made direct contact with Kim is still in the article. Since you have to be alive for them to make direct contact, Kim must still have been alive when they first found him. It's pretty horrible.

Very sad to hear this news. :( I do remember him on TechTV. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

At least he put up a real fight to stay alive, and must have pushed himself beyond the limit to survive when he knew rescue was coming. Tragic.

well, it's always easy to have 20/20 afterwards, but if it were me, i would not have burned the tires. I would be made such a huge bonfire from the nearby trees and stayed put. then again, who knows how his frame of mind was after all that time..feeling guilty, frustrated and if he was eating berries, who knows how they impacted him physically. ie. his chemical balance could have been off resulting in maybe not clear thinking. it sounds like he was a smart guy. the rule of thumb is to stay put and if you have snow to drink, you can last a long time on just water too.

so sad that the rescuers apparently made contact with him. if he was alive, it makes it even worse. i imagine at that point, he was in pretty bad shape too.

i don't know if other places in the world do this, but here in canada, we keep an 'emergency kit' in our vehicles...at least i do. extra blankets, food, flashlights and candles just in case. I'm certainly not blaming them for not being prepared. just a thought for anyone else so this tragedy isn't repeated. i put my stuff in a plastic foldable crate which fits nicely in the trunk and i have 1 for each vehicle.

thoughts to the family.

Of course when I first heard the story, my reaction to him leaving the car was the same... "oh, that probably wasn't a good idea"... but then later I read he left after seven days. Is that right?

If so... I think most would have the done the same. Seven days without being found and no food. You just can't assume you'll survive long enough to be found.

Yeah that is where I remember him the most from. Has Leo or any one from his old gang made any comments. Just sucks. Pray for his wife and children during this holiday season and after.

I just found this article

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/06/missing.family/index.html

Kati Kim and the couple's two daughters, Penelope, 4 and Sabine, 7 months, were found Monday when searchers saw the mother waving an umbrella. They had just set out on foot when they were found, authorities said.
....
The three had not traveled far from their car before searchers found them, Anderson said.

it looks like the Wife and Kids set out on foot and were found shortly after that. So, to counter the "stay in the car" arguement, would they have been found at all if they had stayed in the car?

After 7 days you damn well better believe I would have left the car to find help for my wife and kids.
I think I would've been of the bonfire-building mentality, myself. Tires are good, but a big column of dark smoke would've been exactly what the search party ordered, IMO.

Then again, I have wilderness survival training. I have no idea what sort of training Mr. Kim had. I have to admire his intentions, though.

Have you ever seen the smoke burning tires put out? It's a heck of a lot darker and thicker than any wood fire I've seen.

I also wonder how easy it would have been to get a big bonfire going. They didn't exactly have chainsaws with them, so they were limited to using whatever snow-buried branches small enough for them to carry were available.

The lesson we can learn from this are:

  • Prepare for contingencies; stow extra blankets, water, food, batteries, etc when traveling long distances, even if you think the trip is safe.
  • Create an itinerary, and let others know of your plans.
If we can remember to do these things, then his death wouldn't have been in vain.

i still cant believe he's gone 7 hrs after i found out...it's just so sad and his effort was so incredible. the news reports said that he walked 8 miles. 7 days with no food and then walking 8 miles? that's unbelievable. i wish someday that i can be even 1/4 of the father he was.

...When i first heard this story i didn't know it was James Kim from tech tv/cnet... i thought it was just a "normal" guy

I remember seeing him tech tv i can't believe this happened. My thoughts are with his family.
