Not being possible with the existing iPhone X hardware doesn't make sense to me... It's infrared light, dot projector, and infrared camera, all operating in flood/wide-angle. The field of effectiveness seems broad enough to work in landscape. What exactly would need realignment that couldn't simply be accounted for in software?

The dot projector is clearly angled downwards on iPhone X. This makes unlocking easier when the phone is on a table.

Those same dots would only hit half of a face in landscape orientation.

If they put C on this they should have just put it on the iPhone as well.

Doesn't make sense to have two sets of cables. I like just carrying one cable to sync/charge my iPad and iPhone.

Would be great to use an external monitor more than for presentations only. Also an iPad Pro Mini would be great. Using big Monitor for home work, small device for traveling. iPhone Xs Max is far away to be a competitor. It doesn't have a 4:3 display layout + no iPad Apps.

If they can't do it both ways, it should support landscape instead of portrait.

Seriously, if you aren't using your iPad in landscape, you're holding it wrong.

Does Face ID now support more than one face?
A typical iPad in a family is used by more than on person...

Already does.

Unfortunately you can't have multiple accounts on the same iPad and have your face launch the appropriate account, at least not yet. Seems to me to be the biggest thing they need to add to iPad in the near future if they want iPads to be "computers." And with Screen Time, not knowing who is using the device renders it useless in a lot of families.

Regarding USB-C and external displays, I think it is far more likely that the new iPPros will support the full USB-C protocols over lightening rather than using an actual USB-C port. Current iPP has a USB-C controller but the only functionality is USB 3.0 speeds (with certain peripherals) and USB-PD for fast charging. So a MiFi-certified lightening-to-USB-C cable would work with any/most USB-C peripherals—at least on a hardware level. There's a lot of driver/device use cases that Apple would have to work out.

I think external monitor support is much bigger than people here are caring for. Maybe added mouse and keyboard support can make this a better desktop alternative? I’m truly excited if it could support a ultrafine monitor
Aside from ideology (touch-first devices shouldn't use pointers) couldn't rudimentary mouse/pointer support work just like it does in the iPad emulator mode of Xcode?

This!!
My iPad will always be a family device, and I’ll only upgrade my Air 2 when they add support for multiple accounts / users!
Hadn’t even thought of FaceID launching the correct account automatically, that would be amazing!!

It doesn't work very well for multitouch, and would encourage apps that don't take full advantage of multitouch.

The iPad will likely have two sets of FaceID parts. "Largest notch we have ever made." But the Smart keyboard will only work in portrait. Courage.
