Well, they did just bring out new hardware ;)

Wait until you see the two notches, one for portrait and one for horizontal ;)
oh man. I hope nobody buys them if thats the case. Apple needs design help if the notch continues passed the point that technology can eliminate it.
Its not a design feature. Its a limitation in technology at this time. It will be gone when it can be. Hopefully

No notches, but a notch-sized 9mm bezel all the way around to camouflage the TrueDepth camera.

It’s possible there will only be one TrueDepth camera system which would be on the long edge, so FaceID would be landscape only. But ideally they’ll use two, so FaceID could work in portrait as well as landscape. It would add maybe $30-40 to the selling price.

Unfortunately not all iPad apps surport landscape for some dumb reason.

Really? Thank goodness I haven't seen any of those for a *long* time. I'd say any iPad app (other than a game) that can't work in both orientations is fundamentally broken and shouldn't be allowed on the app store ;)

I am also suspicious about the USB C; why would Apple want to use only USB C outright for iPads despite the newer phones having Lightning? Will we see another dongle situation again?

USB-C makes much more sense, as a start, for the iPad Pro. The phones are completely well served by Lightning, going to USB-C would anger most Apple customers for Apple doing a "money grab" by "changing the ports again" (though I would welcome it just for universal compatibility). But functionally, USB-C doesn't offer too much of a benefit for phones.

For the iPad Pro though, it makes sense- people buying the "pro" device are probably more likely to view it as an upgrade. And it would allow much better use of peripherals. With lightning, if you use HDMI out, you lose all other functionality of the port except for charging. With USB-C, you could have video out, ethernet, audio, and even usb keyboard support with just one plug. And it seems fitting the iPad Pro would be able to share many dongles and peripherals with Macbooks.

I hope we do see these in October. My Air 2 is proving inadequate for Uni work so I'm ready and waiting for this.

In landscape:
9mm bezel all round
Keyboard at the bottom as usual
Sensors/selfie camera hidden in the bezel at the top*
One of the side bezels can charge Pencil 2
The Face ID system scans for a face like Aqua-Scum in Finding Nemo.
Two Notch stickers included instead of  ones, for those that want them.
My talents are wasted here.

*When taking a selfie it offers the choice of a portrait picture in the centre of the display.

If Face ID works in landscape what is that new connector on the back? maybe a new accessory? looking forward to the October event, new iPad Pro's and hopefully new Mac's :)

Animoji reportedly uses that same infrared dot projector, in order to track your face more accurately. So here's my entirely unscientific proposed Animoji test: Attempt to turn your iPhone X to landscape while using Animoji; you will probably find (as I just did) that the Animoji will continue to copy your face pretty much perfectly -- right up until you're almost to landscape, at which point it freezes the animation and asks you to stop doing that.

I'm admittedly "just" a software engineer, and not a hardware engineer... but nonetheless, I personally think it's an intentional software limitation, based upon the observable behavior.

Right....and apologists used the " 'cause supply constraints" excuse last year for the $1000 X. According to you, that landscape is so different now, yet the price has stayed the same.

Hell will freeze over first. Apple expects you to buy an iOS device for every user. They have very intentionally avoided supporting multiple accounts. They would tell you that iPads start at $329 and they consider that affordable. $329 is a lot better than the $500 minimum they used to be.
Yeah, there are more parts and fewer constraints in the supply chain because of multiple suppliers and a year of experience.

Apple sets their own prices. They probably have better margins too. What, you want them to charge less than what they can get? Who does that?

I hope their costs have gone down and if they still get $999 for the Xs, good. It’s called business.

It doesn't actually support two faces, just two "appearances." It's supposed to be used for a single person who changes their appearance significantly, i.e. makeup, hats/masks, wigs, etc. Nobody can be sure what 2 completely different faces would do to the algorithm.

Lol “nobody can say?” I set up my boyfriends face on day 1 of the alternate alearance feature being added and my algorithm is just fine. What a weird comment to make. So weird I made an account just to reply to you.

Touch ID on the back of the phone doesn't solve a lot of the issues people have with Face ID. Namely, you still have to pick up the phone to unlock it. Many people dislike it when the phone is lying on a desk at work and you have to physically pick it up or move your head above it to unlock and check notifications. The biggest benefit of Touch ID was how fast generation 2 was, but that came 2 years after it was launched on the 5S. So if Apple sticks to the same cycle, Face ID should likely have a huge upgrade next year.

Touch ID on the back of the phone is a clumsy solution, both practically and aesthetically. We should be able to tap the phone and hold to unlock, but we simply aren't there yet.

Fair points, and I agree. If I were given a choice between physical Touch ID on the back and Face ID I'd choose Touch ID. However if Touch ID were on the front screen I would definitely choose that.

Can FaceID work from one camera both sideways and vertically?

I'm guessing one TrueDepth system but inside a 9mm bezel that would be on the right side if holding the iPad in portrait mode, with a similar but TrueDepth-less bezel on the left side, as well. None top or bottom. It would look almost like letterboxing if watching a video in landscape mode, and it would put the TrueDepth along the top edge in landscape given the way most people hold it in landscape (with TouchID/home button on the right side).

I think bezels on the left and right side would help with accidental touch when holding in portrait, which is how many use it to surf the web or read.

It will take a lot of courage for Apple to put a USB-C port on it.

Why?

Majority of the MacBook owners now own USB-C dongles and cables. Additionally, with a new product launch like this would mean new, better Apple Pencil, possibly even more significant iPad centric updates to iOS to help make it even more of a laptop replacement and would set up a universal port for all devices next year with the new iPhone.

I am not saying it will happen. However, I would like to see it personally.

If they put C on this they should have just put it on the iPhone as well.

Doesn't make sense to have two sets of cables. I like just carrying one cable to sync/charge my iPad and iPhone.

I agree, it is more convenient to only have one cable. I believe next year we will see the change to USB-C for iPhone's. My question really is if it will be a thunderbolt 3/USB-C device not sure there is a need for such technology in iOS at the moment but could mark the future vision of Apple if it is included.

I personally expect to see a $100 entry prices increase to the iPad Pro lineup. We saw the increase of price in the Apple Watch this year, the iPhone last year, I think the iPad Pro is also going to see the price increase.

As an iPad Pro 2 user, I will be mildly salty if the new ones come out this year instead of the next since I am under the impression that iPad Pros are on a 1.5 year lifecycle rather than 1 year but then again, the lack of Touch ID does not sit well with me. Maybe I just need more time to get used to it?

Why salty? It's not like your iPad Pro suddenly got slower and you have to toss it. And it's not like you have to buy a new one (assuming one is announced in Oct and available this year). On the other hand, as someone who doesn't own an iPad Pro and thinking about buying one, I'm definitely looking forward to an Oct event. And no, I won't be upset if Apple updates it again next Oct.

I am totally excited for this. I hope they open up iOS up for all controllers but I suspect that's a little too optimistic.

Ok, I'll bite. What's the use case for these? Are they similar to the old knobby thing on Thinkpad keyboards? But clickable? If I seem ignorant, it's because if the use case is gaming, I'm not a gamer.

Oh, do you speak to the algorithm? Did it tell you it’s fine? Talk about a weird comment...

Nobody can say if Face ID is as fast or as accurate or most importantly as secure with 2 different faces, which is counter to how Apple designed it. Didn’t think that simple and obvious statement needed explanation.

Apple’s not going to change from Lightning to USB-C for 150+ million customers (who already have lots of USB-A chargers and cables) just so those with a MBP don’t have to carry a Lightning cable for their iPhone. If they change to USB-C, it’ll likely be to support USB 3.1 (possibly for docks) and video alt-modes for HDMI/DisplayPort/VGA. Lightning already supports USB 3 and also USB-PD, allowing 30W charging for iPad Pro.

I personally expect to see a $100 entry prices increase to the iPad Pro lineup. We saw the increase of price in the Apple Watch this year, the iPhone last year, I think the iPad Pro is also going to see the price increase.
Just due to FaceID I’d expect maybe a $50 bump, if they use two TrueDepth systems to cover both portrait and landscape unlocking, it could be $100.
