What problem did it solve that couldn't have been solve by other means?
[doublepost=1537309930][/doublepost]

Agreed, I hate bezels too. But I love Touch ID. Would have been nice to see it on the back of the phone.
I missed the me in there, it solved a lot of problems for me
I live in Canada so it’s great now that I can use touch gloves and unlock my phone in the winter without taking a glove off and freezing them.

I also work in construction and my hands get very dusty or wet. When I’m at work I can never usually use Touch ID but since getting an iPhone X I’ve basically never had to put in a password while at work.

All in all in my day to day use I’ve also found Face ID more reliable and less likely to fail than Touch ID, and the hidden notifications till I look at the phone is amazing.

That’s just my experience but I wouldn’t want to go back to Touch ID now.

It will take a lot of courage for Apple to put a USB-C port on it.

Could someone please explain to me what the heck is all this fascination with USB-c? Ok, transfers data faster in mobile devices (which I personally never connect them to a computer) and it charges quicker (which I never been on a rush to charge) but then this is just me.
Is there anything else so beneficial on this USB-C for which everyone seem to be going banana nowadays?
Regardless, If Apple did that I am almost certain lot of people (including some of them who want USB-C) would complain for how many useless lighting cables they have around and can not use anymore. Just the nature of human being.

But to answer your question above, it may take a lot of courage for Apple to remove the port altogether and I seriously hope they do when they are ready. I will miss it just as much as I miss the 3.5mm headphone thingy. The one that when it was removed, it was said by "experts" around here that no one is going to buy it.

Now that would be epic! That would give a lot of guys here something to ........"talk" about :)

<rant incoming> ...
The hardware of FaceID is a 3d mapping sensor. That's it. Everything else is software. The sensor is not going to be affected by a rotated face. Software is needed to detect the orientation of the face, not hardware, and then software is needed to rotate the 3D face map before it is analysed, regressed and matched.
...
Oh, and FWIW before someone asks, I am an Engineer, with a background in 3d mapping and pattern matching.

wouldn't there be an angle/aim issue?

if the TrueDepth camera is off to one side by 15 degrees, is that enough to throw it off?

Touch ID on the back of the phone doesn't solve a lot of the issues people have with Face ID. Namely, you still have to pick up the phone to unlock it. Many people dislike it when the phone is lying on a desk at work and you have to physically pick it up or move your head above it to unlock and check notifications. The biggest benefit of Touch ID was how fast generation 2 was, but that came 2 years after it was launched on the 5S. So if Apple sticks to the same cycle, Face ID should likely have a huge upgrade next year.

Touch ID on the back of the phone is a clumsy solution, both practically and aesthetically. We should be able to tap the phone and hold to unlock, but we simply aren't there yet.

Am I the minority that thinks that USB C is far inferior as compare to lightning? Somehow I wish Apple stayed with lightning on iPhone and iPad. Im OK with MBP although I find USB extremely wobbly and easy to disconnect.
But truth to be told the actually situation on Apple devices is complete mess. And I find USBA cable with 5W charger in new iPhones insulting :)

If Lightning is so much better than USB-C, and if USB-C is so inferior and has so many issues, why would USB-C haters even consider having it on any Mac, let alone iPhone or iPad? I thought Mac users had discriminating tastes and expect only the best. Therefore, shouldn't Mac users be demanding Lighting ports on Macs instead of USB-C? After all, it's just another dongle, such is the price of progress, never stopped Apple before, Courage...

By the way, is it true that Apple helped design the USB-C connector? So if USB-C is so inferior and has so many issues, wouldn't Apple share in the blame?

definetly - but apples tim never lacks of courage - he is full of it.
anyway am very looking forward to those new ipads - the look beautifully and face id makes for me much more sense on an ipad

I think if these are the real CAD photos then it makes sense that Apple is making the switch to USB-C. Think about it, they're going to use a new body, might as well put in USB-C because they've already changed the body. As far as iPhone XS and XS Max not having USB-C, take a look at how they dropped the X. Now, they have a butt load of iPhone X bodies to update to XS using the same bodies (as typically they do with S versions of iPhones). They're not going to spend the extra R&D to add USB-C and completely dissolve of the leftover X bodies. Plus, if they add USB-C to the next generation of iPhones, the body would be completely redesigned, thus allowing Apple to kill two birds with one stone and make it a marketable selling point. That's just my theory.

Why does everyone say that an October event is common? There wasn’t one last year, was there? I do believe there will be one this year, since it’s such a strong rumor, but when was the last October event? A couple years ago?

wouldn't there be an angle/aim issue?

if the TrueDepth camera is off to one side by 15 degrees, is that enough to throw it off?
Sure, but wouldn't that simply be an issue of rotating it 10-15 degrees so your face is in the right spot again?

Does FaceID only work when you don't look at the screen directly on, but instead rock it back by 10-15 degrees?

I’ve been using an iPad Pro 10.5 as my primary computer for over a year, and the only thing I really miss is being able to connect it to a big display, in an easy way without just having a 1:1 representation of the iPad on the screen.

This rumour suggests that Apple really gets it — the iPad is fast becoming the laptop of the future.

Does Face ID now support more than one face?
A typical iPad in a family is used by more than one person...

2 faces, but the really useful feature would be user accounts on the iPad, so it recognises you and log into your account.
Maybe we'll get it in iOS 20, no hurry...

It doesn't work very well for multitouch, and would encourage apps that don't take full advantage of multitouch.

mouse = finger 1. Actual fingers = 2+

If they give me bluetooth mouse support I'll buy an expensive smart keyboard. Right now the keyboard is semi-useless to me as I need a pointing device while typing.

As an iPad Pro 2 user, I will be mildly salty if the new ones come out this year instead of the next since I am under the impression that iPad Pros are on a 1.5 year lifecycle rather than 1 year but then again, the lack of Touch ID does not sit well with me. Maybe I just need more time to get used to it?

Also, I got a feeling that they may use the already thin bezels to hide the cameras etc instead of notches as the notches dont feel intuitive for a tablet. This may pose a problem for people with chubby hands like me :p

I am also suspicious about the USB C; why would Apple want to use only USB C outright for iPads despite the newer phones having Lightning? Will we see another dongle situation again?

So, not an engineer?

I guess you're unaware of the supply constraints for OLED panels in 2017 and how different that landscape is now that LG can produce acceptable panels as well.

Right....and apologists used the " 'cause supply constraints" excuse last year for the $1000 X. According to you, that landscape is so different now, yet the price has stayed the same.

This!!
My iPad will always be a family device, and I’ll only upgrade my Air 2 when they add support for multiple accounts / users!
Hadn’t even thought of FaceID launching the correct account automatically, that would be amazing!!

Hell will freeze over first. Apple expects you to buy an iOS device for every user. They have very intentionally avoided supporting multiple accounts. They would tell you that iPads start at $329 and they consider that affordable. $329 is a lot better than the $500 minimum they used to be.

That’s actually the very definition of NOT personal opinion. As long as you don’t jailbreak, you’re fine.

Until the day you find out that you have never been.

I mean, I am not putting a tin foil hat on, I am just covering the camera that is pointing at my face unless and until I need it.
Something I have been doing on all computers I have owned since they started putting cams on.
History has already tought me that it is a wise thing to do.

If a piece of tape on the Cam is good enough for Mark Zuckerberg, it is good enough for me too.

if an iPad really has a notch im going to be pretty mad and really rethink apple as a design company. Its just not needed

I just hope it’s sooner rather than later, I really need it for school!...
[doublepost=1537348903][/doublepost]Rather amusing. I wonder why!

Cue the complaints that it won't be available on the iPhone, despite as noted, it would require new hardware to do so.

Well, they did just bring out new hardware ;)

Wait until you see the two notches, one for portrait and one for horizontal ;)
