Can't argue with that, and I believe you when you say your opinion has been consistent. It's the love him one day, hate him the next stuff that the media (mainly ESPN) pulls that bothers me. His play on the field is electric but the media doting media coverage since last November is what made him (arguably) the biggest star in sports.

Build up. Tear down. Rinse. Repeat.

Ditto.

Absolutely. This is where I sit every game.ˇˇ

I have 2 tickets to the game. I'm going to be in section 146. Next week I have Thursday-Sunday off from work so right now just trying to plan out everything we want to do. You recommend anything?

Exactly

Saw this over at Deadspin... thought you might enjoy it :)

Outstanding. For little bits like that, at least, Leno's still got some game.

Should have a good view from that section, especially if you're halfway up the deck (or higher). You'll have the sun in your face, though, so lather up beforehand.

Glad you're coming. Hope you have a great time for all but a few hours on Saturday afternoon ;). Here are some thoughts…

  • Friday night: The bars on Northgate (across the street from campus on University Dr.) should be hopping if you want to soak up the college bar scene. The Dixie Chicken is the most famous A&M bar and also has great hamburgers. The original Freebirds (burrito/taco joint) is a couple of doors down from the Chicken. There's a great taco truck that parks on the promenade in the back.
  • Friday night: If you want some "unique A&M traditions" stuff you can check out Midnight Yell practice at Kyle Field. There's also a concert before it that starts at 8 or 9 with Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell (REK and Lovett were roommates at A&M back in the 70s).
  • Saturday: The bars on Northgate will be slammed before and after our game. Lots of good places to sit and watch the other games that are going on.
  • Saturday: Tailgating at A&M has gotten really huge the last 5-6 years. The best spot to walk around and people watch is in Spence Park across Houston St. from the stadium. The team and band also walk down that street about 2.5 hours before the game.
  • Saturday: Don't know if you've got kids, but if so might head to the "fan zone" outside the north endzone (aka "The Zone") at Kyle Field. Here they have all sorts of tents, games, food, bounce houses, etc. set up for pregame entertainment. The Corps of Cadets and the band will march by a little while before the game, as well.
  • General culture: If you want spend some time doing stuff that isn't strictly game day-related, check out the George Bush Library on West Campus. Pretty cool museum of his time in office, as head of the CIA and during WWII.
  • General culture: Corps of Cadets museum if you like military history
  • General culture: Memorial Student Center is pretty cool, too (they recently finished a huge renovation of it so it's pretty slick). Don't walk on the grass and be prepared to remove your hat when you go inside (it's a memorial and current students love to point that out to strangers).
  • General culture: Bonfire Memorial in the northeast corner of campus. They did a really nice job memorializing the 12 people who died when Bonfire collapsed in 1999. Also gives some history of the tradition.

A few of my favorite food spots (other than the three I listed above):

  • Fargo's BBQ: Hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint. Considered one of the very best in the state (and therefore the world, since Texas BBQ is by far the best there is ;)).
  • C&J BBQ: Also very good barbecue, though it's been a little up-and-down lately.
  • Chicken Oil Company: Sister joint to the Dixie Chicken. Basically the same menu but a little away from campus so usually not as crowded.
  • Lupe Tortilla: Houston Mexican food chain. Great fajitas.
  • Blue Baker: Great sandwiches on bread baked in-house.
  • Wings N More: Sports bar-ish place for good buffalo wings and other fried chickeny things.
  • Christopher's World Grill: Fancy/expensive. If you're in the mood for something nice, this is the best place in town. Get a reservation (if you can).
  • Republic Steakhouse: Fancy/expensive. Best steaks in town. Get a reservation (if you can).

That's the basic gist of it. If I didn't hit on anything in particular you're thinking of, let me know and I can add more. :D

I am biased but I'm pretty sure USC will go undefeated till October. The only teams that are quite good in my book for our schedule is Stanford, Notre Dame and UCLA with a maybe from Arizona and Oregon State. Tomorrow I'm quite excited that I'll be marching with the spirit of troy for the first time and playing in the coliseum infront of 90,000 people. Well yeah fight on! haha

Yeah it's not that I think WSU is better than USC, it's just that I think Leach is usually good for an upset or two each year.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Just printed them out and look forward to being at College Station. I've heard a lot of good things about the people (fans). Before the games I've also been told that people will invite you to eat or drink with them at their tailgate. The best example I can give ABOUT FANS JUST BEING NICE HAS TO BE during the 2010-2011 Alabama/Penn St games. The people at Penn St were so nice.So i hope my experience is as great as I've been told it will be.

I'm only 27 so no kids yet:)

Oh, and i hope i have a GREAT time from around 2:30 to about 6 or so... I hope thats the best part of my trip.. Again thanks for suggestions

Boy UTex, USC Florida and ND sure looked bad yesterday. I thought Washington St would pull the upset, but 10-7? I'm surprised Lane Kiffin made it out of the stadium with his job.

4-2 straight up, 4-2 against the spread. Not bad.

Told you guys, Miami is on its way back. They still are young and inexperienced, but there is a lot of talent there. A win against FSU down the road would probably get them to the ACC Championships undefeated. They played a hell of a game defensively against the Gators, and really shut down their running attack. The defense is MUCH improved from a defense that was ranked 116th last year. They might not be title contenders this year, but with a top five recruiting class, and another year of experience, they should be next year.

Yep. Their D looked good. A little hard to tell because UF's offense is so inept, but Musmi clearly has some serious players.

Do they not play Clemson?

After UTexas gave up 550 rushing yards to BYU last night, Mack Brown was asked if DC Manny Diaz would be coaching next week. Mack's response was, "I'll have to look at the film."

Guess that film looked as bad on the plane ride home as it looked live in the stadium. Manny Diaz fired.

Not this year. They would only play Clemson in the ACC Championship game. UF does have a great running attack, and the talk all week was how it was going to give Miami fits. Well, they held the running attack to 123 yard, which is excellent, and made Driskel make some more passing decisions. We will see how good this team is as the season goes on, and we get closer to a probable top ten matchup against FSU.

were coming for ya!

Can't wait to see what Saban has planned on defense and how Sumlin plans to counterpunch. I'm biased, of course, but I just don't see any way Bama stops A&M's offense, so I think they key will be Bama's offense against A&M's defense.

Assuming A&M doesn't jump out to a big lead like last year, it'll be interesting to see if Bama's OL can come together and run the ball/control the clock or if A&M's front seven will be dramatically better with all its starters on the field for the first time. One thing that worries me is safety play. Our starting FS got hurt on the first drive last week and his backup (who also played a lot in the first game due to suspensions) was directly responsible for giving up at least two long TDs and was just out of position all the time.

IT'S FINALLY GAME WEEK!!!! I just hope the game can live up to all the hype. I'm not a trash talker (that much). I'm not going to show you a video about how the Bama D is going to hit Manziel. I'm just looking forward to a great time in College Station and HOPEFULLY A BAMA WIN.

There is NO doubt that A&M can and will move the ball. But this game, in my opinion, is going to come down to who has made the least mistakes. In the game last year A&M JUMPED on Bama early. Bama adjusted and held them to 9 points in the 2nd half.

But Bama made the mistakes. Aj McCarron threw the interception in the end-zone and Bama would of got the ball back with a little over a minute to go in the game but jumped offsides on 4th down and A&M was able to run the clock out.

I see this game being the "game of the year". I also think it is going to be like the BAMA/GEORGIA game from last season. A back and forth game and I just hope A&M makes the mistake(s) this game.... Roll Tide

Sounds about right…except it will be Bama making the mistakes (I hope). Hope you have a great time in College Station.

Pulling for a Tide victory. A little pay back for last year. But we shall see. I think the Auggies will have a good run at it, as they do have an explosive offense with the Mr. Johnny Football.

But, Roll Tide!!!

First the Johnny autograph stuff, then the unfolding Oklahoma State scandal, now Alabama players have been documented taking money.

OSU
Calvin Mickens was elated. The freshman cornerback from Beaumont, Texas, had just appeared in his first college game, Oklahoma State's 2005 season-opening 15-10 home victory over Montana State, and he had performed well, forcing a fumble, breaking up a pass and making two tackles. In the locker room, as Mickens and his teammates shed their gear, a man he had never seen before approached and handed him cash. "I was like, Wow, this is the life!" Mickens says. "I'm 18, playing football, and I just got $200."
Mickens says he received several similar postgame handoffs from other boosters during his first season in Stillwater. After a 62-23 loss at Texas A&M in which he had an interception, Mickens recalls getting $800 in the locker room from a different man. At the time he didn't consider that he was violating NCAA rules. He saw other teammates receiving similar gratuities and assumed they were the perks of playing for a big-time program.
In separate interviews seven other former Cowboys told SI they received cash payments; 29 other OSU players were named by teammates as having also taken money. Those payments, which stretched from 2001 to at least '11, were primarily delivered three ways: a de facto bonus system based on performances on the field, managed by an assistant coach; direct payments to players from boosters and coaches independent of performance; and no-show and sham jobs -- including work related to the renovation of Boone Pickens Stadium -- that involved at least one assistant coach and several boosters. "They figure if a player shines and you pat him on the back in an obtainable way, he's going to do whatever he can to keep getting that paper," says Javius Townsend, a redshirt offensive lineman during the 2010 season, who says he did not take payments but knew of others who did.

Alabama
All told, Yahoo Sports found that three agents (Simms, Schaffer and Phillips) and three financial advisers (Rowan, Jernigan and Hodge Brahmbhatt) moved at least $45,550 to Davis between September 2011 and December 2012. During this period, records authenticated by Yahoo Sports also showed Davis doled out at least $12,700 in benefits to the five players. Text messages and email exchanges turned over to Yahoo Sports also discuss more than $40,000 in additional benefits allegedly tied to some of the players and their family members.

Looks like the NCAA will be busy for a while, then ultimately do nothing and be imploded by the big schools anyway.
