So that's 5 million actually devices and parts for all the replacements that will be needed due to poor quality control.

Maybe they are intending to price it aggressively, and that's why they think demand will be strong. However, as well as expanding the iPad market to customers with smaller budgets, it's bound to cannibalise sales of the full size iPad to some extent.

At the end of the day - the hardware is important. But it's also an ecosystem "war."

It's about keeping/getting all possible revenues from the ecosystem.

more color choices would be nice, like on the iPod Touch

tho im happy with my iPad 3 + Kindle combo

Not nessecaraly. Those who cannot afford the New iPad aren't buying the iPad, simply because they cannot afford it. Instead they are resorting to Kindles and the Nexus, cause the price is right, even though they might prefer the iPad.

A modestly priced iPad mini around $249 is geared to capture a market that Apple is losing, even though they have the iPad 2 at $399.

The fact is those who cannot afford a 399 iPad 2 but can afford a 199 Nexus, will find a way to afford a 249 iPad mini, because it is within reach and worth the ecosystem.

Apple knows now more than ever that they have to do this. This is the same with having to get the iPhone on as many carriers as possible, since they were losing tons of sales to loyalty or company discounts with carriers (me for example with Verizon). I wanted an iphone for four generations but I simply would not switch to ATT. When it came to VW, I was up at 2am preording one.

No going to happen, Why would Apple do that and kill off new iPad!! It will be none retina for sure!!

I think it will basically be an iPod Touch in a larger form factor. Same memory, A5X processor, retina display, etc. People who buy an iPad have a different need than those who will purchase an iPad mini. ;)

iwant to know how they are ordering 10 million of these but cant fulfill iPhone 5 demand..:eek:

I agree, if the order fulfillment is gummed up now, imagine how it's going to be with 10 million of these on order???

Guess we'll see how it goes! Tim is the master of the supply chain, time to see how great he is at it ;-)

Agree. Apple can get away with a $50 - $75 premium over the Nexus 7, but I can't see much more than that if they want to sell them as aggressively as they've ordered (10 million is an insane #)

This is my opinion, not necessarily fact.

Would kill for retina res in this form factor, but I'll have to wait till q4 2013 methinks. No way am I buying anything new that's <200 ppi these days.

iPads are usually 'refreshed' once each year. If anything, I think Apple may switch to the Lightening connector on the iPad along with the release of the mini.

i wonder how they can possible innovate with the ipad now aside from faster and higher MP camera???

I would agree with you if you we're right. The cheapest iPod Touch is $199 and the cheapest iPad is $399.

I think he meant the cheapest 5th generation iPod Touch is $299 which is ridiculous. I cant imagine the market for a $299-$399 iPod Touch being that significant. The $199 iPod Touch is the 4th generation which is ridiculous as well.

I think Apple better price the mini competitively or else they wont sell as many as they think.

I imagine a surprisingly low price for being Apple. If there's something Tim Cook knows his **** about, it's this. :p I'd go as far as to say that the low price will be the main attraction of the mini. I think Apple really wants to kill the lower end in the tablet business, and that they'll try to do it with an agressive pricing strategy to the point of being a device selling with their lowest profit margins yet. They'll have one device precision targeted for this, and they'll try to leave absolutely no room to compete. $199-$250 perhaps?

Apple would be fools to sell for that price. It would all but kill their high-end iPad market, unless it was far inferior to the new iPad. I can't see Apple coming out with an inferior product just to sell to the low-end market. It's not in their DNA.

I see them releasing a high-end quality iPad with a small screen, and charging accordingly.

BINGO!!

Apple can afford to price this low- very little margin- in order to reap a ton of iTunes/ibook/app revenue. Ongoing, repeat money flow is far more important then initial sale.

I agree with 16gig wifi $250 version.
If they release the lower screen- that's a bummer- but most will not notice or care.

I agree with this.

Apple has the knack of giving their top new devices at least one generation of precedence of features.

For example, Siri. The 4S was the only device for a year to have it. With iOS 6, they put it on iPads and iPod touches. They give excusivity to a device to help sales, because if they had put it on iPad 2s, people would be less inclined to upgrade to the 4S.

I think it is the same with the Retina display on the New iPad. They wan't people to have a reason to go with the New iPad over the Mini.

The Mini will be 1024x768, simply because they need to price it at as low as they want to capture as much of the market.

People buying cheap tablets are not as super concerned in specs more than price. When you are dropping $500 on a tablet, then specs are important.
