There is no way this will be priced at $249...if the new iPod touch, apples flagship iPod is $299 why would they make a BIGGER screened product for less? It's going to be priced $399. Think about it: iPod touch, 4in screen at $299, 7.85 iPad mini for $399 and the even larger iPad regular for $499...not to mention there is still at 3.5 in iPod touch for $199...

$399 is way to much for a 7.85 in product. If you can get a better resolution kindle for half the price then why get the iPad mini? Unlike a few years ago when the iPad came out, there are many lower priced yet equally spec'd competitors in the market now...apple should spend more $$$ on dealin with the iPhone 5 shortage and fixing qc issues before this stuff

Betcha it has the new connector.

I also wonder if the include phone call capability with it. Probably not as it might bud into iPhone sales, but you never know. I think they should have done this as cannibalization logic doesn't always pan out, and when the carriers get into the fray, it would muddy things I would imagine

I just got paid $6784 working off my laptop this month. And if you think that's cool, my divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over $9k her first month. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less. This is what I do, http://bit.ly/UtaIt9

Get lost

Not nessecaraly. Those who cannot afford the New iPad aren't buying the iPad, simply because they cannot afford it. Instead they are resorting to Kindles and the Nexus, cause the price is right, even though they might prefer the iPad.

A modestly priced iPad mini around $249 is geared to capture a market that Apple is losing, even though they have the iPad 2 at $399.

The fact is those who cannot afford a 399 iPad 2 but can afford a 199 Nexus, will find a way to afford a 249 iPad mini, because it is within reach and worth the ecosystem.

Apple knows now more than ever that they have to do this. This is the same with having to get the iPhone on as many carriers as possible, since they were losing tons of sales to loyalty or company discounts with carriers (me for example with Verizon). I wanted an iphone for four generations but I simply would not switch to ATT. When it came to VW, I was up at 2am preording one.

Agree. Apple can get away with a $50 - $75 premium over the Nexus 7, but I can't see much more than that if they want to sell them as aggressively as they've ordered (10 million is an insane #)

This is my opinion, not necessarily fact.

Very elitist. And I would argue that of all the Kindle Fire, Nook, and other tablet purchasers that don't have an iPad could EASILY afford an iPad but chose to either a) not spend that much b) the iPad didn't solve any MORE "problems" than they needed. IE - they bought the right product for their use case.

Another common example is that I know several parents who have iPads - but bought Kindle Fires/etc for their kids NOT because they couldn't afford them but because a smaller screen and having something they were less concerned with having to replace if it broke was more attractive.

Price is important. But it's not only because of affordability. And those that really thinks that their iPhone or iPad is beyond the means of those that buy other phones or tablets are, in my opinion, deluding themselves.

My comment wasn't in regards to "elitism" at all. I was just making the point that Apple knows they can get away with a "premium" over what the Nexus is selling for. That's not "elitism" it's business.

The ecosystem is worth the extra $$ to me, and I'm not alone in that

omg apple have you really forgotten about the 13 in rMBP and iMac??? :( please release them first! :(

Allenbf - sorry - my response was more directed to the first poster I quotes. In regards to your post - I agree that they might be able to get away with more - but I don't see that as them doing themselves a service if they want to dominate this sized tablet. The goal is to take/retain as many people into the Apple ecosystem instead of letting them go elsewhere. Hardware is just the entree into that. Apple knows this.

No no no

This will be the remote for the AppleTV (40" screen including Apple iOS)

- Browse content while watching TV
- type on fullsize keyboard instead of crappy remote
- SecondScreen for TV program makers
- Browse content on you mac and play on TV
- Live debate and chat about current TV content
- Itunes DJ type of content playlist

This would be THE solution for browsing content and inserting TEXT and so on...

PLEAS MAKE THIS!!!!!

I think you're confusing apps with devices.
You seem to want an app that does all that -- you could run it on the current iPad.

I've a sneaking feeling that this iPad mini will be more aggressively priced than people expect. Remember how much cheaper than iPad was at launch compared to expectations?

Apple has such strong supply chain control and such high volumes that they have probably been able to produce these devices for far less than their competitors could manage. We could be about to see a very aggressive move here.

I would agree with you if you we're right. The cheapest iPod Touch is $199 and the cheapest iPad is $399.

Nope...I've had this argument before...the cheapest, LATEST iPod Touch is $299. Go to apple.com and look. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch

If you (or others) feel like buying last year's model or 3 generation ago's model (in limited configurations due to what's left hanging around the warehouse of a retailer)that's your prerogative.

You must be rich then. I have come to the conclusion in the past months that I simply cannot afford a $500 iPad, as much as I need and like having it. So currently, I don't have one and I won't buy one unless the price is right for my budget. Hence my excitement for the mini. I also want something a bit lighter as well, since I have found my most favorite two things is to read and surf the net, both one handed tasks.

And I find it hard to believe that the iPad can't fit the case scenario yet a Nexus or Kindle can. The iPad has the largest and best app library available, meaning it fits any tablet need seamlessly.

And all the parents that bought their kids Nexus or Kindles, if they had the option to, would have bought them an iPad mini. Most parents with kids have iPhones, meaning they already bought apps. They could use those apps on their kid's iPad, they couldn't with the Nexus or Kindle.

Mainly it'll have less storage than the $299 iPod.

$249 tablet with 8GB
$299 iPod Touch with 32GB

But the iPod touch is $299 at 32GB. So, maybe not $249, but certainly $299 would be in reach at 16GB.

That's probably my upper threshold for buying one.

Agreed.

You originally wrote "Those who cannot afford the New iPad aren't buying the iPad, simply because they cannot afford it. Instead they are resorting to Kindles and the Nexus, cause the price is right, even though they might prefer the iPad. "

Maybe you worded that wrong. Maybe you meant to say they bought Kindles, etc because there was no other option.

Again - it's not JUST or ONLY because someone can't afford an iPad.

Because if that's what you believe - you are saying everyone would choose an iPad if they had all the money in the world and NO one would choose anything different. Do you really believe that? Because there's no way I would ever believe a statement like that.

Not to mention the broader appeal that simplicity attracts. Millions of seniors, otherwise afraid of computers & smartphones will buy an iPhone to make them feel "young & hip". Their vanity rules.

iPhones tap into seniors desire to be cool like their kids, even though most don't have a clue how to use many of the basic features that make up the phone.

I know this view is a popular one but, for me, it's irrational.

They aren't competing products. One is a tablet, the other is a Personal Media Player. There is no reason why the price of the iPod touch should have any baring on the price of any of the iPad line.

True....But they will probably aim it different in the market. It's an "always in couch device" where the iPad needs to go with you around the house.

Indeed it could be done with a simple app.. But normal customers won't see it that way, and would buy it thinking its just a remote.

When 1 in the family is using the iPad, you wouldn't be able to use it for TV.

Maybe the app will also be released on other iOS devices.. but if this thing gets sold next to a TV set, I think people will be in the market for it.

I cant imagen there is a 10 milion market out there for a mini iPad, I do think there are 10 milion potential AppleTV buyers.

I 100% agree with you. Plus, they could easily offer an 8 GB model to allow them to say "Starting at $249"
