Nope...I've had this argument before...the cheapest, LATEST iPod Touch is $299. Go to apple.com and look. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_touch

If you (or others) feel like buying last year's model or 3 generation ago's model (in limited configurations due to what's left hanging around the warehouse of a retailer)that's your prerogative.

If that's what you meant, then that's what you should have said. Did I touch (iTouch :p) a nerve? You seem very defensive and angry.

Considering people want retina on the iPad mini, and mock ups show it being thinner, will it have a very weak battery then? As the new iPad needed a bigger battery to power the retina screen, remember this is only around 1" smaller supposedly.

I 100% agree with you. Plus, they could easily offer an 8 GB model to allow them to say "Starting at $249"

They could. I imagine whatever capacity they go for they'll start at a competitive price as compared to other tablets on the market. I doubt they'll go as low as £199 - remember this devices will be an iPad which carries a certain badge value which they won't want to undermine. I could see them starting at £249.

Coming from someone who owns an iPhone 5 and an iPad 3rd gen, I like the difference between the two. I love playing games on my iPad compared to the iPhone (especially Angry Birds). Having another model of the iPad, well it needs to impress me. I like the size of the iPad, I think it's great. If another one comes out, it needs to wow me.

Not to mention the broader appeal that simplicity attracts. Millions of seniors, otherwise afraid of computers & smartphones will buy an iPhone to make them feel "young & hip". Their vanity rules.

iPhones tap into seniors desire to be cool like their kids, even though most don't have a clue how to use many of the basic features that make up the phone.

Plus, there are so many people like my parents... where they buy an iPad or iPhone for web browsing, apps, and reading... They never bother with adding music or video because they aren't willing to learn how, especially now that iCloud permits them to skip on using iTunes to set up/back up the iPhone or iPad.

So they could easily get by with an 8 GB version. And then the ads will say:

" iPad Mini - Starting at $249* " (or lower, but doubtful)

Very elitist. And I would argue that of all the Kindle Fire, Nook, and other tablet purchasers that don't have an iPad could EASILY afford an iPad but chose to either a) not spend that much b) the iPad didn't solve any MORE "problems" than they needed. IE - they bought the right product for their use case.

Another common example is that I know several parents who have iPads - but bought Kindle Fires/etc for their kids NOT because they couldn't afford them but because a smaller screen and having something they were less concerned with having to replace if it broke was more attractive.

Price is important. But it's not only because of affordability. And those that really thinks that their iPhone or iPad is beyond the means of those that buy other phones or tablets are, in my opinion, deluding themselves.

Basically. I don't own an iPad because I still don't see the point in having one. I absolutely loathe typing on a touch screen, and would much rather have a light laptop with a ten inch screen than buy an iPad and carry around a keyboard attachment. It completely defeats the purpose.

That being said, I and my family like to read books, play Words With Friends, etc., and participate in a lot of church functions, but using just a phone is uncomfortable after awhile. So I bought three Nexus 7 tablets and everyone is incredibly pleased with the results. Not as bulky as an iPad, absolutely fantastic piece of equipment that does e-reading and everything else it's asked to do.

And yes, I can afford an iPad, but for checking people in at church functions? I much prefer the portability of the 7 and reading things on it feels better all around. I've used plenty of iPads, but I still fail to see the point. If I have to have three devices it'll be a phone, a 7 inch tablet, and a laptop (because of the keyboard). Price is never an issue, it's just a matter of needs. The iPad would create more problems than solve it.

For sure, and they know people are willing to pay more for the iPad considering how many lowered priced options at the full size there already are... Yet the iPad has like 63% of the market or something (going off of memory).

It wont have a Retina display. This will be an entry level device but the display will still be a high resolution IPS display with the same excellent calibration as the iPhone and iPad have. It'll be on a par, overall quality wise, with the displays on other small tablets.

Remember, Apple doesn't have to outcompete their competition on hardware specs alone. The added value is all about the ecosystem. Assuming this new iPad mini will run all current iPad apps then right from day one this device will have vastly more functionality than any competing tablet. Add in iTunes and iCloud support and, I hope, Siri, and you've got a very compelling device, well worth a few quid more than a similar spec'd android tablet.

I hear where you're coming from, but you're not the target audience for an iPad Mini. They're going after people that haven't bought the full-size version for whatever reason, i.e. thought it was too big, too expensive... If people that have the full-size version also want to get a mini of course Apple would be thrilled, but that's certainly not what they're expecting.

Yep. I'd argue that just the iPad brand adds a solid 20% to the percieved value of a tablet. Just the name. If you add in all the apps, customer service, iTunes, iCloud, etc, there're plenty of reasons to pay extra for an iPad. They could probably add a 40% premium over any other tablet without putting anyone off. So, if an Android tablet is £159 the iPad could be £229. I expect it'll be slightly more than that though.

Remember the iPod?

Steve always went on in keynotes about entering new parts of the MP3 market and crushing them (iPod, iPod Mini/Nano, iPod Shuffle), which, of course, they did. I could see them doing the same here. As many have said, the price is what's going to be interesting, considering the new iPod Touch starts at $299.

You aren't the target market for this. You have an iPhone and an iPad. This is for those that want the more portable iPad or those that want one for their kids or an entry level tablet.

There is no way this will be priced at $249...if the new iPod touch, apples flagship iPod is $299 why would they make a BIGGER screened product for less? It's going to be priced $399. Think about it: iPod touch, 4in screen at $299, 7.85 iPad mini for $399 and the even larger iPad regular for $499...not to mention there is still at 3.5 in iPod touch for $199...

$399 is way to much for a 7.85 in product. If you can get a better resolution kindle for half the price then why get the iPad mini? Unlike a few years ago when the iPad came out, there are many lower priced yet equally spec'd competitors in the market now...apple should spend more $$$ on dealin with the iPhone 5 shortage and fixing qc issues before this stuff

Not if it's an Apple product...and it's a good price if we get retina + A6

I think he meant the cheapest 5th generation iPod Touch is $299 which is ridiculous. I cant imagine the market for a $299-$399 iPod Touch being that significant. The $199 iPod Touch is the 4th generation which is ridiculous as well.

I think Apple better price the mini competitively or else they wont sell as many as they think.

Ummm. The 4th generation $199 iPod is now 32GB. The new 5th gen is $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB which were the exact prices of the 4th gen 32 and 64GB versions, so yes, people bought them.

No, the name will be MaxiPad.

Last time I laughed that hard I fell of my dinosaur

I doubt on the 249 price:(
16gb $249
then 32gb $349

then the 32gb is only 50bucks more than the New 5th gen ipod touch

I believe it will be 279-16gb or 299-16gb then 379-32gb or 399-32gb

It's all about the storage. The devices you are mentioning are 32-64GB. iPad Mini will start at 8GB for $249 or $299. It will be 8/16/32 or 8/32/64, price will be $100 more per storage upgrade. $399 is far too expensive, that is only $100 less than the iPad with retina display.

Never get the first model.

Usually quite true, however this isn't exactly Apples first model in a tablet line. Between the iPhone and iPad, Apple has now had 3 solid iterations to work out various problems. The parts are going to be nearly identical to existing iOS hardware, and even the screen (assuming non-retina) wouldn't be a new trick.

From a stability stand it should likely be at least as good a the iPad 2 at this point. Although it seems like the chances are good that it will be an iPad 2s guts in a smaller frame. A5 (not X), non-retina, sub-mega pixel cameras, etc. So if one doesn't like the hardware specs of the iPad 2, ya... skip the first gen.

Personally the product lineup is still looking a bit cramped for a Mini. As most of us are saying, pricing is the issue. At 249 it'd be an iPad 2. At 399+ it'd need to be much closer to the iPad 3.
