Probably a dying Nvidia GT120 GPU, borrow one and confirm it.

When you gonna buy a new one, get a RX 560 or RX580, so you have a METAL one and will be possible to upgrade to Mojave.

i have no way of borrowing a Nvidia GT120 GPU?

Can you send me a link to a RX 560 or RX580 so i can see that this is and the cost. I have no idea exactly what it is, cheers

hi please see the attached list below, i have high lighted in red possible GPU are these best ones on the list for me?

Question
1) the gpu wants to have the largest GB as possible?
2) Changing the GPU will not effect files stored on my mac and software installed?
3) Will upgrading to Mojave effect any of the above?

I have also place a link to a ebay listing of gpu's any of these look good?

Can you send me a link to a RX 560 or RX580 so i can see that this is and the cost. I have no idea exactly what it is, cheers

I don't know where you are located, I doubt that sending any of my local links will help you - this is something that you need to research locally, since you'll need to get a 2nd hand GPU to have it work with Sierra/High Sierra.

1) the gpu wants to have the largest GB as possible?

Yes, but VRAM is just one of the things that makes a GPU powerful. There are weak GPUs with loads of VRAM.

This is complex since involves several metrica, but with one example that applies to you, there are RX 560 and RX 580 with 4GB of VRAM, the RX 580 is at least 2,25x more powerful than the RX 560.

2) Changing the GPU will not effect files stored on my mac and software installed?

If you get a GPU that is supported by Sierra, yes.

The AMD Polaris family of GPUs is supported since 10.12.6, so if you get a RX 460/560/470/570/480/580 it will work with Sierra, just need the power cable to replace the GT120.

Do not forget to get the mini-PCIe 6-pin (RX 460/560, some Rx 470/480) or dual mini-PCIe 6-pin to 8-pin power cable (RX 570/580/590), since a Mac Pro with GT 120 from factory does not need the mini-PCIe power cable. All mid-2010 have it from factory, but since someone installed an early-2009 GPU to your mid-2010, maybe the cable is not present.

Also there is the issue of width of the GPU, a lot of GPUs that are supported will block the usage of PCIe slot-2, so, be aware that not all GPUs that you can buy, you can fit inside of the Mac Pro if you have any PCIe card installed to PCIe slot-2. Even if you do not use it right now, maybe you'll need it in the future, so avoid any oversize GPUs.

Lot's of the GPUs on the list require macOS releases newer than Sierra. Do not buy a GPU older than RX 460 or even look at one made by NVIDIA. While the Radeon HD 7950 is supported, is too old (2012 released GPU), are dying like flies now and several models are oversize, do not buy one.

I don't think that the RX 590 is supported by Sierra, if remeber correctly the RX 590 support starts with 10.14.2, it was a late to the game GPU, even being just a more powerful RX 580 the RX 590 have a different PCIe ID that is not supported by Sierra AMD drivers.

3) Will upgrading to Mojave effect any of the above?

Depends.

To keep your files and apps, you'll need to first upgrade from Sierra to High Sierra, then you can upgrade High Sierra to Mojave.

Mojave require a METAL supported GPU.

would this do the job?

would this do the job?

PowerColor Red Devil Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5

Yes, but why buy an oxidated card? It will die soon. Btw, never buy any 2nd hand electronics used near the sea.

Also, there are Power Color RX 580 (also Sapphire Pulse/Nitro/Nitro+ and XFX 580, just to name a few) made for the East Asian market that are not supported by Apple.

Chinese GPU makers renamed the weaker RX 570 chips as RX 580 2048SPs, SP = Streaming Processor/Computing Processing Unit. These are fake RX 580s and not supported by Apple AMD GPU drivers.

The easiest way to identify these fakes are by the number of SP units:

  • Real AMD RX 580 have 2304 SPs
  • AMD RX 570 have 2048SPs
  • Fake RX 580 (RX 580 2048SPs) have 2048SPs

Ebay and AliExpress now sell these fake RX 580 with 2048SPs GPUs everywhere.

Yes, buying a GPU without knowledge is difficult…
