I wonder why so many people, especially non-Verizon customers, come here and will rant and battle everyone in sight about the iPhone going to Verizon. What personal stake do you have in Apple going or not going to another carrier? If they do, it's good for both existing Verizon customers and people who don't get good AT&T coverage in their hometown. If they don't, then nothing changes. I just don't get why people tend to take this issue so personally.

I can understand the people that come here and say they want it, I don't understand the ones that have it, like att and say they hope it never happens. If I had good coverage, I'd have it on att and hope the verizon people would get their wish too.

Question

What is Verizon going to do about iTunes on their version of the iPhone? I know they have their own music application. Visual VM? ATT it comes standard on the iPhone. Verizon is going to have to bend over backwards and give into apples requests!!

The guy in the next cube has a driod on verizon. I don't see any of their stuff on it. Do they still do that with the new phones or are you talking the old phones? Wasn't itunes used for the rokr (or whatever it was called?) that apple tried before?

Well, upon reading the news, one would find that LTE isn't right about the corner. Last I check VZW wasn't putting up test sites until early 2012. The only cell company with working 4G is Sprint, everyone else will be waiting at least 3 more years.

I don't know what new sites you're reading, but I think you might have Verizon and Clear confused. Verizon will have 25-30 markets on LTE by the end of the year. Which would be perfect for an LTE iPhone to launch later this year after a September manufacturing start.

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1220176920100513?type=marketsNews

"Verizon plans to launch LTE services in up to 30 markets with a total population of about 100 million by year-end."

Not saying it will happen, but I wouldn't rule it out either.

Can't we all just get along? ;-)

I'm basically just waiting it out for a bit. I am on month-to-month on Verizon right now (out of contract) and I just need to make a decision by August for a trip I'm going on. I am glad I have some time to see how things shake out. Plus, knowing the next-gen iPhone is coming next month is keeping me from buying the current one now. It wouldn't make any sense for me to do it this close to the launch.

I've been very happy with my Verizon phone service here (New England), which is why I'm reluctant to switch. I haven't been on ATT since it was Cingular (it sucked then), but I've been asking people I know who live all around my region how they like the AT&T service. The vast majority of them say they like it/have no issues with their iPhones/service. Only a couple have said the opposite.

I think if it did come to Verizon, it would be a win/win for everyone who wants an iPhone as far as plan pricing, choice, etc. Monopolies are never good for consumers ;-). Also keep in mind that the whole POINT of sites like this one are to have some spirited conversation about RUMORS...enjoy it! It gives us all something to think about/talk about.

Bottom line for me, is that I just don't want to carry around my iPod and a phone (since I always have both with me)...especially when I can have it all on one device.

Thanks for all the interesting points/counterpoints - its made for some fun reading (and will continue to do so, I am sure)!

What happened to the hybrid GSM/CDMA chip? Wouldn't it make more sense to create one model?

Thats what i said on another thread.

I just don't understand what people keep saying about the 4G stuff. From what i read, and from talking to VZW Tech Support [I have an Alltel/Verizon Tower on my families land] they told me that 4G is backwards compatible with 3G. So, even if it was rolled out fast enough, a 4G phone would still work.

I don't get it. People outside the US have been enjoying unlocked iPhones and tethering, while we in the US are more interested in putting the iPhone on an even locked-down provider that is only usable in 1 country. Really? I rather see Apple made the iPhone with quad-UMTS-band supporting the 1700 band for T-Mobile 3G in addition to AT&T's 850 band, and sell the iPhone unlocked.

Another uneducated post. Seriously, do a little research before posting COMPLETELY INACCURATE DATA.

CDMA is in 118 countries including Canada, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India, Mexico, and Russia just to name a few.

Interesting.

I have read some articles in the past that stated words to the effect that AT&T had not planned on the rapid growth of data requirements from the iPhone and that the other networks would be affected in the same way.

This article seems to be contrary to that.

I guess we'll find out someday if the iPhone comes to Verizon.

This is probably true. But Verizon and Sprint have long been the big data carriers. I worked for companies where the users carried AT&T phones, but all got 3G air cards from Verizon or Sprint (because AT&T hadn't rolled out a decent 3G network yet.) Sprint and Verizon have had 3G data services for much longer than AT&T so their data networks are much more mature. AT&T's 3G network barely got a start before the iPhone was added to it. AT&T didn't have the experience of big data laptop users on their network like Sprint and Verizon.

I think Apple may decide NOT to offer a CDMA-compatible iPhone for two reasons:

1) CDMA does NOT support simultaneous voice and data communication. That right there could "break" parts of the iPhone OS, which was designed for GSM in the first place.

2) Verizon will soon start rolling out nationwide 3GPP LTE, which does support simultaneous voice and data communication. As such, Apple may hold off releasing an iPhone for the Verizon network until LTE is widely available in the major metropolitan areas--hopefully by middle 2011, when the fifth-generation iPhone will be rolled out.

How exactly would not having simultaneous voice and data "break" the iPhone OS? Exactly what part of the OS (that was originally presented to Verizon...but then actually delivered on an Edge network) is "designed for GSM"? How do you design an OS for GSM? These statements make no sense!

I ask myself the same question here daily.

What is Verizon going to do about iTunes on their version of the iPhone? I know they have their own music application.

Like other carriers, Verizon has their own music and app stores, but they're targeted to their dumbphones.

Smartphones have always used whatever they want. Blackberry has their own media manager, for example. Apple would still use iTunes.

VVM is not a big deal, except perhaps for pricing.

Cant wait. Going to be getting the new 15" MBP core i5 in a couple of weeks and to be able to also get the iphone with Verizon will only sweeten the deal. Nice! :)

Verizon is a different company when the Droid came out.

They don't lock down their stuff anymore.

Not Verizon colored/themed menus anymore. You don't have to use anything from them at all on your phone other than the service if you don't want now days.

With the Android stuff at least.

Some people like to feel they're special and they have something that others don't. It's like those people who never owned a PPC Mac who got great joy when Apple dropped OS X on PPC.

Do those Verizon "world phones" do both voice and data, or just voice?

How are power requirements on the "Gobi" chip? Apple is already struggling to get battery life out of their current iPhones (it's one of hardware shortcomings most often mentioned by iPhone owners).

Both voice and data. But while running on CDMA without SVDO, not simultaneously for the technical reasons noted earlier.

Eg. Blackberry Storm 9530. A single handset supports CDMA2000 1x EV-DO while operating domestically in the USA, and GSM/EDGE/HSDPA while roaming internationally. The version sold by Verizon is only licensed by the FCC to use CDMA while within the USA, but it automatically switches to GSM/EDGE/HSDPA when you exit the USA.

..... Did you know AT&T offered 4 billion privately (as in side money not part of the proposal amount) to a couple Exec's that can sway where the iPhone can go and also keeping the iPhone until 2014.

my BS meter is blinking red.

They don't lock down their stuff anymore.

People often confuse dumbphones and smartphones.

They still lock down their dumbphones, just as other carriers do. In fact, a complaint that some people have is that Verizon puts the same UI on every dumbphone (NOT smartphones) so their customers don't have to learn something new every time they get another phone.

However, smartphone owners could always download and use whatever app or theme they wanted on their smartphones, again the same as other carriers do.

You never had to use anything from them before, either. (Exception: GPS apps)

They still do usually add optional red themes and sometimes a link to their navigation app and/or store... which you can change or delete. I have read that they've locked some Blackberries to the Bing search engine lately, which IMO is not nice.

Again, every carrier usually puts their own default theme and startup graphics and sound on their phones.

The iPhone is the major exception, and that actually saves both Apple and the carriers a lot of time and money usually spent for branding.

Well, my corporate dumb/smart phone (blackberry 8830) won't receive MMS, who locked that feature out, sure wasn't me?

Quoted because I think it got lost in this thread. To repeat:

DigiTimes is reporting that Apple has ordered 10 million CDMA phones.

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100513PD205.html

I didn't miss it, in fact I get the daily Digitimes e-mail. However, I kind of blew it off as a rehash of yesterday's news. Not sure if it's a new report or not. Of course this one has a specific qty while the previous one didn't....so maybe this is a new story.

It's a new story. Just don't know how much stock to put into it, of course.

Who knows. I remember back in November 2006, months before Jobs revealed the iPhone, there was a similar report of Apple ordering millions of them. The story even called it the "iPhone". Here's the old link, which also named Foxconn as the factory.
