I have called Verizon three separate times and all three reps told me the same thing. If you are doing a alternate upgrade (a upgrade from another line already on your account that is eligible) what you need to do is before turning the phone on call them and they will activate it right to your number with no issues on keeping your unlimited data. I asked this question several times about the unlimited data each call they all said no problem this is a question asked 25 times a day.

I'm going to try to verify this as well. The rep I spoke to on the phone told me that I would need to first activate it on the eligible line and then go to the Verizon store so that they could transfer it to my line and give me a new sim card. As such, I've been trying all my local verizon stores to see if they can issue me a new sim card now so that I don't have to go to the Verizon store with my iPhone 5 on launch day morning so that it'll work with my line.

Not saying that you're wrong - I hope you're right. I just hadn't heard of that option. I'll let you know what I find out.

To me (and I think it's mentioned elsewhere in this thread), it makes sense that you would have to activate it on the line it was upgraded from because that's what triggers the contract extension. Unless you activate the phone, that line isn't obligated to remain on contract. To me, that makes sense anyway and I could see why they'd do it.

I just confirmed the "confirmed"

I just talked with a Verizon rep, everything on this thread were right. But you don't have to have a dumb phone after you transfer the iPhone 5 to your UDP. It'll just be a dormant number if you don't have a dumb phone as long as you pay the $9.99 fee every month for 2 years. Hope that helps... :)

I look at it this way ill call them first tell them what I'm doing, and if their wrong ill make the trip to the store can't hurt to try. Like I said can three reps be wrong? I know they can but I'm hoping not

I asked about the contract as well and if you don't call yes activating does extend the contract but if you call them they do that as well. Only Friday will tell trust me I won't be loosing my unlimited! At least not yet

Keep us updated. I don't have an old family plan but I have an old UDP plan I was going to add a line to.

That would be great if it works. My friend will be getting his phone on Friday but wont be able to actually try to activate / swap it for about a week so that should give us plenty of time to see what everyone else is able to do.

Why is Verizon allowing this loophole? They are subsidizing $450 of the cost of a phone and only collecting $240 in return. Hell, even the ETF is less than the amount they are subsidizing. How can they let this continue?

Full Disclosure: I'm adding two lines on to my FamilyShare plan on Friday to keep my UDPs so I hope they don't close this loophole any time soon.

You are now chatting with 'Brittany'
Brittany: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
You: hi i have some question about upgrading the lines on my account
Brittany: Cool! I will be more than happy to help you get upgraded.
You: question one: if i order iPhone 5 on line 1 and 5 (which are non smartphone right now) then once i get the iphones can i change those iphone to other two lines (which has unlimited data rightnow)?
Brittany: Unfortunately, no. When you upgrade a line with unlimited data, you have to change that option. Even though you are upgrading different lines, when you activate it on the line with unlimited data, it is like you upgraded that line and switched the upgrade dates.
You: What if I upgrade it with the 2 gb option? Then when the phones come, switch them to the unlimited lines and cancel the 2gb plan on the other lines?
Brittany: The only way to keep unlimited data is to purchase a phone at full retail price.
You: So lets take this step by step.
You: What happens if I upgrade the non smart phone lines to the iPhone5 with 2gb data option?
You: I pay $199 each right?
Brittany: Yes.
Brittany: You pay $199 if you are upgrading to the Iphone 5-16GB.
You: Ok, so then I call soon after getting them and tell the agent to please switch the iPhone 5's to the current unlimited data plan.
You: You can't do that?
Brittany: Those lines will then have the 2GB options like you picked.
Brittany: I don't know if you received my last message. I do apologize for that. I stated that the only way to keep unlimited data is to get a phone at full retail price.
You: It was my understanding that because I didn't upgrade those lines (technically) I'd be able to keep unlimited data on those lines.
Brittany: No, I do apologize for this misinformation. The only way to keep unlimited data is to pay full retail price for a phone. I can check your data usage if you would like me to.

I was thinking the same. Everyone needs to chill out! Lol. We've verified it works, leave it at that!

And when it doesn't? Seems like a pretty big what if.

It looks like the question is "does the data plan travel with the phone or the line"

Can someone help me? I tried to get an answer out of the thread, but nothing seems to fit my situation:

I have 4 lines, but the only 2 available for upgrade are on unlimited data (mine and my sister's). Is there any way to keep both as unlimited data and upgrade at the subsidized price? My mom has a dumbphone, but she doesn't have an update available.

I am unsure if the upgrade can come from a phone with the unlimited plan.

Can this work with unlimited individual accounts? Verizon's back office allows you to add a line but I'm not sure that makes it into a family account. I haven't seen any feedback from the people that asked earlier.

Nope, sorry. Verizon wants everyone to give up their unlimited data plans, so they will no longer offer subsidized pricing on new phones and allow you to keep your unlimited data plan. If you upgrade, you must get either a tiered data plan or go to the ShareEverything plan.

You could always go onto the Verizon Wireless website and try to add a line. When I try to add a line to my family share plan, it allows me to choose the 2gb tiered data option and the price for minutes only goes up $10. If it does the same for you, then I would say it would work for the individual plan as well.

Guys, I think we need to wait until Friday or Saturday to avoid risking to lose our UDP. Got the exact same answer from a Verizon sales rep last night when I tried to open and upgrade 2 additional lines. Good things come to those who wait...

My family plan has
one smartphone w/ unlimited data(Mine)
one smartphone w/ 2GB Data(Wife)
and one basic feature phone which is upgrade eligible.

I wanna get iphone 5 using this upgrade transfer and keep the unlimited data and not sure which is best way?

I am thinking of transfer upgrade eligible to my wife's line, activate the iphone5 onto this line, then she goes back to her existing iphone 4s and switch my phone with a new iphone 5.

Any recommendations?
