Help, please?

Hello!

So I've read through this thread quite a bit, however, my situation is slightly unique because I live over 1000 miles away from my parents.

Here is how it is:

Me- iPhone 4S - Unlimited Data
Dad- iPhone 4S - 2GB data
Brother- iPhone 4S - 2GB data
Mom- Dumbphone - No data plan

We have an upgrade coming up in October and the plan is to switch the upgrade to my Mom's line, buy the iPhone 5 using her number, sign her up for the 2GB data plan, get the phone, leave it turned off, enter the IMEI/MEID online under activate/ switch phones on my line... and then am I good? Do I need to call Verizon to have them cancel the data plan or will it just stay off since it was never activated on her account? I wasn't sure if not having physical access to her phone would be an issue or not. Also, is there anyway that I could sell my 4S before activating the iPhone 5 and just using an old dumbphone, or will that kick me off my unlimited data?

Hopefully I was clear enough with my explanation! Any help would be appreciated!

Can anyone help me with this?

It may depend on where you order it from. I ordered from Apple from the dumbphone line and added the 2GB data plan. While the order was processing I checked my Verizon account and noticed that dumbphone line's contract had been extended, with no Data Plan. I don't think the phone appears on the line until you activate it.

I just activated the phone online for my Unlimited Data plan line, and didn't have to do anything with the dumbphone at all. During the activation process it'll probably ask you to confirm that the correct number is the dumbphone's number, but you just do it anyways.

I ordered it at VZW online with my dad's upgrade. It shoudnt make a difference right? As long as I activate it on my line first before turning it on. I just wanna make sure that my dad's phone will be the same with no data charge. Thanks for sharing this!

After following this thread from the start, I just want to add details of my own successful experience.

Here is what happened:
I pre-ordered the iphone5 on a dumb phone line with an available upgrade. When the package arrived today I did not activate it on my own, but called the VZW rep. She was able to activate the phone directly to my UDP line and keep my UDP intact. The dumbphone line experienced no interruptions, as there was never a phone swap on that line. My line now has an iPhone5 with UDP.

My experience was nearly identical to this. When I got my package, I didn't even open the iPhone box, I just called Verizon and they activated it for me. :) All in all, a pleasantly easy experience. Thank you everyone for your information and see you all next time at the iPhone 5s/6 launch :D

Verizon is probably allowing this loophole because they realize people don't use all that much data anyways. I use my phone a lot, and usually average 1.5-2.0GB a month.

I heard that they throttle the top 5% of users; I wonder if they'll start monitoring the ULD people more strictly.

They only throttle 3g, and its only when you're on a congested tower. It isnt like AT&T which throttles you until your next bill

Oh I meant about the phone being automatically assigned to a line, or a data plan automatically being added. It's possible that the data plan will be already added since you ordered through Verizon; you can check online. When I ordered through Apple, it lets you choose the plan, but I don't think they're able to change Verizon accounts, so my dumbphone line had nothing added except for a contract extension.

Yeah just activate it on your unlimited plan before turning the phone on (if yours is like mine, both the IMEI and SIM should be printed on the back of the box; you don't even have to open it). It'll probably display your Dad's number when you turn it on, but just hit confirm; if you activated it on your line I think that takes priority.

Awesome; thanks.

Thank you, I actually finally got it to work. Turned it off and on one last time and it went through. Now just have to wait to get home to get on wifi to restore all my maps. Wish I could use the LTE... And the work WIFI is almost non-existant. Ah well at-least I have a phone before I have to leave the office to drive home.

good deal, from one former hokie to another :) though i actually ended up graduating from UVA (runs and hides).

I have a upgrade available on October 7th and I was thinking about transferring my upgrade to my mom's line that was upgraded when they had the double data promotion. Then bring it over to my account after activating on her line. Would I be able to keep my unlimited if I did this?

Which line is eligible for upgrade?

If your line is unlimited, eligible for upgrade, and you transfer that upgrade, I think that's considered a contract renewal by Verizon and they'll probably kick you off unlimited. You shouldn't touch the unlimited line except when you activate the phone.

i already activated my iphone 5 on a number, since then my coworker gave me an unlimited data account. Can i switch it over to that line?? the verizon rep said i have to deactivate it for 24 hours? but from what i read on here you can just do it by typing in the sim # and IMEI #?

just wonder if that will work after my iphone has been activated..

any help would be great. thanks guys

I really want to know this too. I need to activate it on my line after it was activated on another line.

Well that was easy. I was on hold for about 15 minutes with Verizon. Told them I would like to activate my iPhone 5 this evening. I currently have a Droid X with the Unlimited Data Plan and Two Dumb Phones on the account. All lines were eligible for upgrade and I preordered the iPhone 5 and used one of the dumb phone lines as the line I wanted to upgrade. My two dumb phone users have phones in great condition and they have no interest in upgrading at all. They both only make about 3-4 calls a month and having a smart phone is a waste of money for them.

The Verizon representative said it was no problem keeping my Unlimited Data Plan. I asked why I was able to do that. He said since I was using an alternate line for the upgrade I was able to do that. In turn, it extends the contract of that dumb phone's line by two years versus the Droid X's line. So I cannot cancel the dumb phone line for 2-years which I wasn't planning on doing anyway.

This is horrible. I have a sealed Iphone 5 box in front of me and I am scared to open it. I just tried connecting the phone to an unlimited data line, but it keeps saying we cannot process your request at this time, please try again later. I tried 4 times. Any one else has this problem?

I have a friend who got screwed!!! She upgraded a dumb phone line with iPhone 5 and transferred it to her unlimited dp line. They told her that she'll lose her UDP if she do that and she agreed. Is there anything else she can do to reverse it since she didn't upgrade the UDP line and she doesn't know that it was possible to do whatevers in this thread???

Sounds like her dumb phone wasn't ready for an upgrade - meaning the contract wasn't up.

are you doing this online? i guess you should call. seems like everyone has had a pleasant experience.

She got it for $199, and she was told that that's the line that was upgrade able. No question about it. Is there any way it can be reverse? Can she return the phone and get her UDP back?

Yea im on the phone with the guy now, after 30 min hold. He is telling me that there is a chance that I might lose my unlimited data. I told him I will go to Sprint. He said he will try and make sure that I do not lose the unlimited data. Im waiting for him to activate the phone now. We will see what happens.

She's going to have to go into a store and speak with a representative. Something is missing from the story.

help

Ok having a hard time understanding if I can fix this. I upgraded on my family plan using the eligible upgrade which I believe was on the dumb line. Now I have lost my unlimited and have 2gb. What do I need to do to get it back?

okay so pretty much what i did is when i went to preorder the iphone 5 i chose to add a new line. then as i ordered i just set everything to an individual plan. same as my plan 900minutes/unlimted text and then selected 2GB/$30. then a couple days ago i called verizon and ask them if i could switch my plan to the nationwide family share plan without changing my data he said yes and did that. so now im on the 700 minutes family share plan with unlimited data on my main line and 2gb on the second line. ($40) a month. but what i will do once i get my iphone 5 (stupid fedex running behind) i will activate my iphone 5 on my main line and place a dumb phone on the new line ($9.99).

Ok, I see.

So for my situation, I would just skip the last step of putting a dumb phone on the new line for $9.99, and keep the new iPhone 4 (or 3gs, whatever it may be) with the 2 gb, right?

And when you said you picked the individual plan of 900 mins / unlimited text, do you think I could pick a plan with less mins instead? My mom isn't a big talker on the cell phone, so it's not necessary really. Although if this is going to be switched over to the family plan, maybe it's not a big difference either way.

UPDATE

NO NANOSIM NEEDED!

For a few of my friends I just grabbed microsims from VZW and cut them using the sim that came with the iPhone 5 as a guide and they work perfect for switching the phone to your UDP line.

She's gonna do that tomorrow. Hopefully it can be reverse because keeping the UDP is the priority. Can it be reverse, anyone?

I also have a box of IPhone 5 still sealed. I have to bring it to Apple and do a return and buy it back to full retail no contract. I pre-ordered it at apple.com but instead of letting me get a non contract phone at the time it processed a new contract phone line. So now I have to go to Apple Store tomorrow to get this straight. I want to open it badly.. But I don't wanna risk my UDP.
