I also have a box of IPhone 5 still sealed. I have to bring it to Apple and do a return and buy it back to full retail no contract. I pre-ordered it at apple.com but instead of letting me get a non contract phone at the time it processed a new contract phone line. So now I have to go to Apple Store tomorrow to get this straight. I want to open it badly.. But I don't wanna risk my UDP.

You can open it up activate on dumb line then go grab any 4G sim, cut it down throw it in your Iphone 5 (write down the sim number first) Call VZW and bam UDP on your i5

Sorry, yes, my bad. I'd forgotten that single plans can't add a line now without moving to share everything. This whole thread only works if you already have an old Family Share plan. Sorry bud :(

Ok, so now I'm even more confused, heh.

The other poster indicated he was able to get a new line (initially it was individual), then called and asked to be put onto a family plan, which somehow allowed him to then purchase the i5 with unlimited?

I think as you said, this thread seems to only work if you have an old family share plan; not much info for people like me who only have an individual plan. I have no issue going to a family plan, as my mom would like to join my account anyways with an iPhone (probably a 3gs or 4), but I want to keep the unlimited when I go from my 4 to a 5...

WOW. Just my luck. So i spoke to the rep, and he switched everything to my UDP Line, the number and the sim. I did not turn the phone on, until he said everything is switched over, and I asked him like 3 times if he is sure.

So I turned the phone on, and it says invalid sim on top left corner, and unable to activate because the connection server is temporarily unavailable. The rep went over to tech guys and they said that too many people are activating their phones, so it is very slow. He said you should wait till morning and than it will activate good.

Till Morning? I been waiting a week and a half. Wasnt that enough? I mean I really like the black phone and that its really light. But besides the dark grey screen I cant even play around with the apps. This is BS. I dont even care about the phone being active. Let me be able to join the app store, thats all I need.

EH, guess I gotta wait till morning. Weird that it is only happening to me. The rep did say that my unlimited plan stayed, so I guess he didnt want to lose me to Sprint.

Ok, I see.

So for my situation, I would just skip the last step of putting a dumb phone on the new line for $9.99, and keep the new iPhone 4 (or 3gs, whatever it may be) with the 2 gb, right?

And when you said you picked the individual plan of 900 mins / unlimited text, do you think I could pick a plan with less mins instead? My mom isn't a big talker on the cell phone, so it's not necessary really. Although if this is going to be switched over to the family plan, maybe it's not a big difference either way.

well its your choice if you keep it as two plans i think you can drop the minutes down to 450 for 40 bucks if its family then you share minutes. but when you order the plan can be changed after the fact as long as you dont go to the new share plans.

I am totally confuse what to do.. some people say the UDP changed when they made a switch..
Apple told me that I can return the phone & cancel the line within 30days without paying ETF with Verizon but just what I've used. But then I will still have to get an I5.
The line that my I5 is a new line not even link to my UDP. And I don't need an extra line to cause I have a business phone as well.
I don't have any 4G sim too to use. I have one on my iPad 3 but i don't know if I can use that.

UPDATE

NO NANOSIM NEEDED!

For a few of my friends I just grabbed microsims from VZW and cut them using the sim that came with the iPhone 5 as a guide and they work perfect for switching the phone to your UDP line.

You area a life saver! I will be doing tomorrow

Oh I meant about the phone being automatically assigned to a line, or a data plan automatically being added. It's possible that the data plan will be already added since you ordered through Verizon; you can check online. When I ordered through Apple, it lets you choose the plan, but I don't think they're able to change Verizon accounts, so my dumbphone line had nothing added except for a contract extension.

Yeah just activate it on your unlimited plan before turning the phone on (if yours is like mine, both the IMEI and SIM should be printed on the back of the box; you don't even have to open it). It'll probably display your Dad's number when you turn it on, but just hit confirm; if you activated it on your line I think that takes priority.

I'll do that. Thank you so much!

I really wish I would have read this thread before I pre-ordered my phone last friday. I don't like checking my data so often...

If anyone is still struggling with this (OR if adding a new line and you cannot activate it directly on your ULD line), I suggest going to the Apple store. They handed me 2 VZW nano sims like it was nothing an I was all set.

2 new dummy lines with dumbphones (no data) and 2 iPhone 5s with ULD!

Just an update, I did the update and had the Iphone 5 working fine on my unlimited data with nationwide 1400. Initial checks of both My Verizon on the iPhone and the the Verizon webpage showed I had my same old plan and my unlimited data. A later check at night absolutely baffled me to see my plan switched to a Share Everything plan with 4 gigs of data. I plan to go to the Verizon store tomorrow and bust some heads, I will post an update later.

How did you get that iPhone? Off an upgrade? If so was it a basic line or ULD line?

Have a plan with 3 phones, nationwide 1400, 1 droid x (my phone with unlimited data) and 2 dumb phones one with an upgrade. Bought the phone at apple.com theres the exact rate plan.
iPhone 5 32GB White & Silver (CDMA)
Hide Rate Plan
Rate Plan

Voice Plan ................................................................ $110.00
Nationwide Talk & Text Family Share 1400
Data Plan ................................................................. $30.00
2GB

So as you can see i added 2gb of data to that line in order to use the phone.
When i got the phone i activated it on my line, and everything still showed the same plan up to 4 hours later. Then all of the sudden its all switched...

Which line did you first activate it on? The one with your ULD? If so then that's why it was switched. Needed to be activated on the line it was ordered on.

I was wondering if this would happen to those who didn't activate first on the original line..

It let me pick my current plan when activating and was working fine. Then it magically switched, others activated it on their Unlimited Plan first and claimed it was working fine, however i fear they might wake up tomorrow to the same situation i am in. Not once did it ever ask me to change my plan.

I've been wondering if somehow the phone is initially somehow tied to the Data Plan you have to choose during the preorder. I don't know how or why it would be that way, but it also sort of makes sense. I'm interested in seeing what happens to everyone else as well.

The initial plan i picked when preorder was 2 gigs, and it now shows my having a 4 gig. All i can do is wait and either call or go to a store and hope for the best. I have my last statement showing my old plan for all the phones and the apple printout saying i would still be on the Nationwide 1400. I knew i should have taken screenshots while doing it ><.

----------

Digging through the Verizon website they have a document saying at 9:23 pm eastern i somehow agreed to terms of a new contract. I activated the phone no later then 4pm eastern.

Also says my Contract End Date is Monthly and the early Termination fee is $0.

Makes me wonder if paying full retail price would of been worth it considering all that's going on here.

If I dont get the result i want tomorrow from the store and i have a contract from verizon saying all my phones are on a monthly plan with a $0 ETF I will most like cancel all my plans with them.

Or just read through the thread properly...all week people had been saying make sure to activate on the dumbphone line first and then deactivate and transfer, that's the way to ensure that it works.

We had one person come in here and say the online tool let him keep unlimited when he activated straight to the unlimited line, and people took his word for it and it looks like it's not the best way to go about it.

Don't trust the online tool. CALL Verizon activation support, tell them that you want to process the contract renewal / extension on the dumbphone line and then transfer the iphone to the UDP line afterwards, and they will be able to do it for you. You might have to wait 24 hours for the SIM to reset, or get a new SIM from Apple or Verizon retail, but that's not the end of the world. Relax a little bit, you still have your old phone, if you are patient you WILL be able to use your IP5 with unlimited.
