The online website. Clicked upgrade than it said which line and under each phone had the option to transfer it or not.

Earlier a lot of reps were saying that, if you did you would lose your unlimited. Reps gave out a lot of misinformation before the iPhone release which confused everyone so now we were just clearing up all the false information passed on from reps.

well my concern is how you shift it over could be the issue? what about apples website on the personal pickup? has anyone tried any methods other then through verizon website?

You can only do the transfer of the upgrade and purchase at the same time, therefore it needs to be online or with a rep who can do it for you in store. Cannot transfer upgrades online at Apple.

but is the transfer upgrade the same as the "alternate upgrade" that you can do anywhere that sells verizon phones?

I'm on a family plan. If I transfer my upgrade to another line on my family account whether it be a line that currently has a smartphone with 2gb data or a dummyphone and then the family member on that line uses that upgrade for an IPhone 5 and give it to me does the upgrade transfer take away my unlimited data in this situation? Thanks.

I just got off the phone with Verizon and found some interesting information with regards to keeping my unlimited data package WITHOUT adding a dumb phone line.

My wife and I have two lines. One with an upgrade that is due now, and the other that will be available in Dec. Basically the guy told me that if I use my upgrade and buy the iP5 subsidized for $199, I can activate it on my line for 24 hours. After that, I can activate it on my wife's line, and I'd activate my OLD iPhone on my line. So, she would have kept the unlimited data for her line. If I activate my OLD phone on my line within 14 days, I can call and say that I swapped phones with the wife, and I;m back with my OLD phone, and I want my unlimited data back, they'll give it to me. WHAMO! Both lines still have unlimited data.

When HER activation comes around in Dec, we can do the same thing, use her upgrade to get a subsidized iP5, use it on her line for 24 hours, then swap it to mine, call within 14 days and BAM. Two new iP5's, subsidized with unlimited data.

This whole scenario came directly from Verizon's 800 number. The guy's name was Ray. He told me he did it all the time for customers to buck the system.

Has anybody done this? Is this too good to be true???

I would ask one more wrinkle on this, can you transfer your upgrade to someone not on your account. My wife and i both have Verizon, but separate accounts.

PhoenixMac - was your dummy line eligible for upgrade?

My current situation is (I am the authorized owner for all these 5 lines):
Line 1 - smart phone with unlimited data -> eligible for upgrade
Line 2 - smart phone with unlimited data -> eligible for upgrade
Line 3 - dumb phones -> not eligible for upgrade (out-of-state with relatives)
Line 4 - dumb phones -> not eligible for upgrade (out-of-state with relatives)
Line 5 - dumb phones -> not eligible for upgrade (out-of-state with relatives)

I was wondering if the following scenario is possible:
1. Transfer Line 1 upgrade to Line 3
2. Order iPhone 5 with Line 3 by adding 2GB data
3. Activate the iPhone 5 upon arrival on Line 1 via online VZ account or phone with CSR (since I don't have access to Line 3 physically)
4. Remove 2GB data from line 3 (is this even needed since I am not activating iPhone 5 on Line 3. Theoretically, data should not be added to Line 3 as it's still a dumb phone)
5. Contract is renewed on Line 3 for 2 yrs
6. I keep my unlimited data on Line 1

Anyone had success with this scenario? If it's possible then I can repeat it with Line 2 and Line 5.

I got conflicting responses. Some folks are saying the dumb phone also needs to have an upgrade available.

That will work, my dumbline did not have an upgrade available as I opened it to purchase the iPhone 5 on launch day. And from what I was told when you do an upgrade transfer you have to activate it on the dumbline first or else it looks like you upgraded your UDP line if you activate it straight on that one. But you can call verizon when you get your phone and get them to do the whole process on the phone so that way the person with the dumbphone doesnt lose service.

And the contract will be renewed on the line the upgrade transfer is coming from, in your case line 1.

That is exactly how I did my upgrade transfer, and you could do the same thing with Line 2 to Line 3 again it doesnt have to be a different dumbline to repeat it.

No both have to be on the same account to transfer the upgrade.

I personally would not try it. Reason is he could be scamming you to get rid of your unlimited data because as soon as it is off your account no matter what you do, unless it was proven to be a reps fault without your consent you cannot get it back.

Remember Reps are known to tell little white lies in order to make sales or boot people off of unlimited data, my friend who works at a VZW store said they get incentives to get people off their unlimited plans since that is where the company is headed.

OK, this may be a dumb question but here goes. I don't have a family plan, but my mom has a Virgin Mobile dumbphone. If I were to ask Verizon to add my mom and change my individual plan to a family plan, would I be able to use the unlimited data loophole?

Alright, i'm in a similar scenario. I'm in a family plan, 2 smartphone lines and 1 basic line. I have an upgrade (smartphone line), and my sister (with the other smartphone line) has an upgrade. I don't want to use my upgrade because I have unlimited data. My sister on the other hand does not. If I went down to the VZW store, would they be able to do an "alternate upgrade"? Activate the iPhone 5 on my sisters line, and then deactivate, activate her old phone back on her line, and activate the iPhone 5 on mine within 24 hours? So in the end I keep my unlimited data with the i5.

In addition if you did that I want to add to the question could you still put Verizon Asurion insurance on your line with that method?

So I just talked to a representative online dealing with my question (Tried taking a screen shot but failed to take a shot of the answer -_-) Anyways, she said that it should work, or that was what she was told. Waiting for my sister to come home from NY and try this ASAP at the Verizon store.

Hey all,
Im having troubles activating my new phone. I have done what everyone has said but no dice. My line had the upgrade and the UDP and my upgrade was transferred to my mom's line. I activated it on her line, like normal then deactivated it. Waited until today (24 hrs) to activate it on my line. Went through the my verizon page and tried to "add or switch" a device. Went through all the steps and I get to the end where it says the phone has been activated. But, it's not. I cant make calls or anything and my old phone still works. I tried calling vzw and the rep wouldn't help me, told me to call *228 but that was all she'd give me because I was "cheating the system" even though I got the directions originally from an instant chat on vzw.com ... anyways. Do I need to call the 800 number for activating LTE as the final step, or will I lose my UDP this way? Any help would be appreciated.

1. Call back and try to get a different rep, it's not cheating the system. You just agreed to sign another 2 year contract with Verizon. Sounds like the rep you talked to was a bitter rep.

2. If you have a Verizon store close to you, just go down there. I had the same problem with sim card. Went down to Verizon store, out in 10 minutes with a new sim and a working iphone 5.

success

Just activated my iphone, confirmed unlimited data using the "myverizon" app

-ordered iphone through my moms upgrade online (different account than me)
-took it to an apple store, "bought" a second sim card for $0.00
-took unopened phone and extra sim to verizon store. The guy there knew what I wanted to do, activated the phone for my mom, switched the simcard and activated it to my account

Kind of annoying, but it worked for me.

did you just get a new sim card for your number or how does that work? Do I just get a new card then get on my verizon again and activate it the same way I already tried?

Yea, I went down there told them my sim was already registered to a different number(line), but I want it on a different line. They said no problem, went to the back got a new sim, ask me what number I want the iphone 5 to be on. That's pretty much it.

It's took 10 minutes because the rep thought the nano-sim is the micro-sim and it took a few minutes to realize the mistake. If not I could be out of there in 5 minutes.
