I was under the impression that when the line that has unlimited comes up for upgrade - you can "transfer upgrade' to the dummy line - activate - leave it on for a bit - then switch devices - hence you are able to upgrade the unlimited line and keep unlimited...

Am I wrong here?

I did exactly this and it worked fine for myself and others in this thread. YOU MUST ACTIVATE ON THE DUMMY LINE FIRST. DO EVERYTHING ONLINE...DO NOT INVOLVE A REP.

Hey guys, I've been skimming through this thread for quite some time because I too have an unlimited line that I do not want to give up. My situation is this:

Line A: Samsung Galaxy S3 *Unlimited Data* (Eligible upgrade 6/17/12)
Line B: Iphone 4 *Unlimited Data* (Eligible upgrade 11/1/12)
Line C: Iphone 5 *2gb Data* (Eligible upgrade 5/12/14)
Line D: Iphone 5 *2gb Data* (Eligible upgrade 5/12/14)

I recently placed an order online for the Iphone 5. I transferred upgrade from Line A to Line C. Of course during the ordering process it shows Line C's number that is being upgraded. But upon receiving confirmation, it shows Line A's number next to the new order. As I recall, I should not worry at all. I then logged into VerizonWireless.com to check on my line status, and then I see a message under Line A that state's. "Our records indicate you recently purchased a device for this line of service but have not activated it yet. You have the option to proceed with your online equipment order after you have activated your new device, or you may contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 for further assistance" - (Device Needs to be Activated, Activate When you Receive your Device).

So even when I did transfer my upgrade from Line A to Line C. The confirmation and my VerizonWireless account only show's Line A as being the one doing the upgrade. So for my situation, would it be safer to just receive the Iphone 5 from Line C and have Line C activate the Iphone 5 that was initially for Line A? Any insights?

Here's my situation:

I have a droid X due for an upgrade on a single individual line. Is there anything I can do besides paying full retail?

Alright so I just tried this last night. Can those who have had this work successfully let me know if this is what is supposed to happen? I transfered the upgrade from my droid with ULD to a dummy line with no data. I then selected and purchased the iphone 5 via that line, choosing a 2 gb data plan. The iphone wont ship till 11/17. however I log out of my Verizon and log back in and it says that my Droid line has an order pending waiting for activation. Should I just sit tight and wait for the phone and activate it on the dummy line. I should then go to the apple store get a new nano sim and switch it over to my line? Or have I lost my ULD by transferring my upgrade?

Just sit tight....Your fine. The email will have the original number in it as well...but it'll be fine.

If for some reason something goes wrong, you can always return the phone and revert to your original plan.

Just make sure you activate the new phone on the dumb phone plan online first!

You can either go get a new sim or wait 24 hours after you put the original dumbphone back on the line and the SIM will open back up for use on another line.

Also my order from Verizon came much quicker than originally quoted...you'll get yours early.

Jtludwig you are awesome!!! Thanks so much for the quick reply! I will just sit tight and hope this works out. Thanks to everyone in this tread for the help!

Im hoping one of you gurus can help me out......

I currently have 2 phones and have added a line to my Family Share plan to get an Iphone 5.

1. 4 Unlimited Data
2. 4s Unlimited Data
3. IP5 - just ordered

I added a line to order an Iphone 5 with 2gb of Data. Both unlimited data phones are still under the 2 year contract, Line 1 is due for an upgrade in Feb. I want to transfer the IP5 to Line 1 and have Line 1 on Line 3. I do not intend to cancel the 2 gb plan(my son is getting this phone).

I have been reading everywhere but most are examples of "dummy lines" that people intend to just pay the $9.99 to keep the line.

When I receive my IP5, how do I go about doing this? Is it the same process: switch numbers on vzw.com?

I know it has probably been posted here before, but I can't tell if I can do this.

I have four dumb phones and no texting or data plans currently and we are one the "family sharing" plan (grandfathered). Can I upgrade to Iphone with data for the $10 a month? This is very confusing. If I can, please describe how it is done. Online, over the phone? I only want ONE Iphone and keep the other dumb phones. I don't really need the data, but I know I have to have it and I want an Iphone for pics and video.

I would be willing to get the Iphone 4 for free, but I know they won't let me without a data plan. I don't want to mess up my account, so I am pretty leery of doing this as I share this account with my in-laws.

TIA

If you are on an individual line plan (i am as well) then we are not able to use this loophole. I am saving up the $ to pay full price. Should be ready to buy around christmas, just hope the supply will start to catch up by then.

Line 1: iPhone 4 with UNLIMITED DATA
Line 2: Blackberry with UNLIMITED DATA
Line 3: Dumb Phone

Upgrade Line 3 with iPhone 5. Use I5 on Line 1 (keeps UNL DATA). Line 3 stays with Dumb Phone.

Question: What to do witn Verizon's Nano Sim? Does Line 1 need to get a Nano Sim? I don't know.

I have a question about this method of upgrading that maybe someone can shed some light on. Here is my situation. I have 3 Lines. Line 1: Droid Incredible 1.0 with ULD(Upgrade Available), Line 2: iPhone 4s with ULD(No Upgrade), Line 3: LG Flip phone for home(No Upgrade). If I am to do what others have done and transfer my upgrade to line 3 to get iphone 5 and follow the posted instructions, please answer the following.

1) Transfer to line 3 will extend or "renew" contract with Vzw for 2 years on line 1?
2) I must activate iP5 on line 3 first without turning it on.( I will be doing this online). How long do i wait to reactivate flip phone to line 3?
3) After flip phone is reactivated on line 3, and i wait 24 hrs for "sim reset" in iP5, I will be without phone on line 1 during "sim reset" period?

AND last but most important and I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one little caveat.
4) If the answer to question 1 is "yes", then doesn't this new contract give VZW the right to terminate ULD at any time since by transfering and renewing my contract for 2 years on line 1, I am agreeing to all new terms and conditions regarding VZW service? This is huge because if this is the case, then this is how they can terminate my grandfathered ULD. The only way i see that they couldn't do this is if line 3 was already eligible for an upgrade which would mean there is no reason for me to transfer from line 1. This is not the case however for me but I just wanted to know since this could effectively end my ULD if i upgrade via this method.

I have 4 lines listed below...

1 - iP4 - unlimited
2 - iP4s - unlimited
3 - basic phone
4 - basic phone

Both iPhones were available for upgrades. I bought the iP5 on phone #2 with discount. When it arrived, I called VZ and told them I would like to activate it on line 1 and keep my unlimited. She said no problem. I said are you sure & she assured me I would not lose the unlimited. I asked for her name & employee number and wrote that down. So far so good & it shows the new phone on my account along with the unlimited. Now time to do the other phone. I think as long as you activate it on a different line there is that loophole. They want to keep their customers happy but you need to do these extra steps to keep your unlimited? They might be banking on the majority being too lazy to go through these extra steps?

Good luck!

Whatever you do......do not turn on the phone after you have received it. I made that mistake and had to request them to put my SIM card into aging so I could change it to my number.

With my phone I *had* to turn the phone on. Leaving it off meant that it never showed up as activated on the online activation system.

Yeah that's what I was told also. It's not a big deal though, if anyone does this just call Verizon and they will put your phone into aging and then you can do the swap.

I turned mine on but it doesn't automatically activate. The rep said to give it 15 minutes and it should activate once she did her thing. I plugged it into my mac & proceeded to restore it from my iP4 backup. 15 minutes later it was good to go.
