Margins?

I would agree if this was a component increase of $50. Hell, even $5!

But all well know that this free adapter costs below $1 a piece to make over seas

I'm talking total margins. Of course the adapter is almost all profit. However, if they are making $10 less on the iPhone they may want to make it up somewhere else. A logical place is to offer an adapter for sale that a lot of people buying new iPhones would be likely to buy.

Dont have anything to add that hasn't been said already but this really does seem like a terrible move in terms of PR from apple. Disgusted.

Greed, greed, greed.....

I have been an Apple fanboy since 1999 but have recently become disenchanted with the way the company is going, a reflection of the way America itself is going, to hell with the average person....look below, are these people any different from the greedy bankers? Are they really worth this kind of money?
This is why you are paying ridiculous amounts for adapters etc (oh, sorry I forgot, it's called free enterprise!).

And that's why I won't be buying anything Apple again...sad really.....

Recently promoted Apple execs awarded $50M in stock grants

As part of their recent promotions to senior vice president status, Apple executives Craig Federighi and Dan Riccio have each received stock grants currently worth well over $50 million.

According to new filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple's SVP of Mac Software and Engineering Craig Federighi and SVP of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio were awarded 75,000 shares of restricted company stock worth $50.62 million at current prices.

The filing, first reported by CNET, specifies the stocks will vest at three separate intervals over the next four years, the first being a batch of 25,000 on Dec. 23, 2013. The remaining units will vest equally on Apr. 23, 2015 and Aug. 23, 2016.

Federighi and Riccio were promoted to Apple's Executive Team in late August, alongside news that formerly retired hardware chief Bob Mansfield would return to the company in an unspecified leadership role.

Also noted in the SEC filing was the sale of 25,000 Apple shares worth approximately $16.6 million by board member Mickey Drexler, who is also the chairman and CEO of J. Crew.

Apple usually offers restricted stock units to its executives as an incentive to remain with the company and to foster consistent performance. In March, Apple CEO Tim Cook, CFO Peter Oppenheimer, and SVP Phil Schiller netted a total of about $150 million in vested stock granted in 2008.

Jealous, jealous, jealous...

You're perfectly within your rights to not purchase anything Apple, and if you choose to do so merely out of principle, then more power to you. As far as I look at it, they provide a product that I very much enjoy and is worth the $ trade-off. Who cares how much their executives are paid! If you do, it really truly only amounts to petty jealousy.

So pissed my MacBook Air doesn't have a floppy drive. (j/k)

That said, wouldn't it be swell Apple threw a bone to those of us who have been investing in the iPhone ecosystem since 2007. And, maybe be proactive about it instead of having to be dragged into doing an Antenna-gate sort of event.

Closer to abandoning

I've been a loyal Apple user for two decades now. Each move Apple makes to spit in the face of customers in the name of maximizing profits sends me at least looking to see what the competition offers. I will likely buy this phone, but am ever so much closer to taking a loss on all the apps I've purchased, etc. & migrating away from the platform. Not including the adaptor & charging $30 is nothing but pure greed no matter how you slice it.

I disagree. Not everyone needs an adapter since not everyone has accessories that use the old dock. The phone ships with a charging cord compatible with the new connector. My beef with Apple on this is that they are charging $29 for one. The rumor mill had said $10 apiece and $29 for three. Apple could have adjusted pricing once they knew the rumors were out, since they had the effect of setting an expectation. $10 for an adapter would go over more favorably with the average customer.

I thought that it came with it - given what it said, hence I didn't buy one separately or with that order.

I heard a rumor from the rumor mill that the iPhone 5 was supposed to be free. Apple should have adjusted pricing once they knew the rumor mill had set an expectation.

Sorry, but count me as one who feels shafted by this as being greed; as we ALL need at least one of these to conform to our current apple ecosystem.

Nobody who owns a iOS device (i bet), will be able to survive without this adapter that is Overpriced. 9.99, ok- 30- pisses me off.

You know, when I saw that they were changing the point, I thought "awww man, I'm gonna have to replace.... umm... errr... no, I got nothing". Everything I use is bluetooth or connected by the USB cable. I assume the lightning one will work just fine. I am only sad that my cable with the pretty purple moving lights will be a casualty until they start making the new ones.

Boooooo BS. Don't say we get it if we don't. they should honor it with every order before they took it down.

Like it or not, the rumor mill does drive customer behavior. Even Tim Cook said as much on the last earnings call. You can bet marketing pays attention to them. They evidently made a conscious decision to a) not include an adapter when apparently at least at one point they were considering it, and b) to charge $29 for it.

Who cares? There will be a flood of cheap ones soon enough anyway.
Even if Apple doesn’t allow it they will clone it anyway. ;)

Edit:
Lots of people may not have ordered one thinking they were getting one anyway and now have to pay extra shipping if they order one.

Don't need it? Don't buy it.

Can't afford it? Don't buy it.

Morally oppose the price? Don't buy it.

Hate Apple? Don't buy it, but please be sure to tell us all about it!!

Jealous? No, I am reasonably wealthy myself and can buy any number of Apple products without a second thought, in fact I have just about everything that Apple has made in the last dozen or so years including an early computer which cost me 3000 dollars!
What attracted me to Apple was two things. One a hatred of Microsoft software and two the attitude of Steve Jobs, remember his desire to make great products and his utterance "it's not about the money"......

You just have to read the comments in this forum to realise a lot of folk are unhappy, Apple got to the top by constantly pushing the boat in design, quality and invention, not by litigation, trying to stop rivals and banning other products
( which incidentally has led to a huge rise in Samsung Galaxy sales!).

Apple make the best products out there and as long as they do they will keep on expanding, hopefully greed will not become the main focus of the company at the expense of their customers....

Judas what a bunch of freakin cheapskates! I bet this thing costs Apple a penny for 5. I'm getting really sick of Apple nickle and dime'ing us for every little thing.

they are not merely dumb adapters. per this article they do smart routing of data via the pins. it's a device.

Confused But Not Amused

I ordered my iPhone5 around 2:30 a.m. CST. I think I saw the reference to the adapter but was more interested in getting AppleCare+ and the iPhone order in. So I blew by the reference.

Yes, I'm faced with having to replace two docks and three or four USB cables. I need power at home, on the road, and at work. Two at home in fact. I don't like to have to remember to lug the one in box set-up with me. Wear and tear using one system system provided is not worth it IMHO.

What I'm not amused I don't think Apple owes us free anything. I'm not thrilled about the change/ I don't have a third party sound system that requires the iPhone5 to plug in. But I can see how that would bite if you've got an expensive sound system relying on the old port.

i'm just going to suck it up and buy the new cables and adaptors as I can afford them. I hope the new shiny thing is worth it:eek:

I think it's relevant to note that the Lightning to USB cable does come with the purchase of either an iPhone 5 or iPod Touch 5th generation, as it's required by the device to hook up to your computer. The 30-pin connector isn't needed for either of those devices by themselves, so naturally, wouldn't be included.

I pre ordered the iphone 5 at about 3:30 am EST, I got the confirmation page saying my order went through. However i did not get an e-mail from AT&T. My credit card has a $1.00 pending transaction from AT&T so I am kind of sure it did go through, however i am not positive

That's wonderful news.

Now, what does it have to do with the adapter again???
