I'm looking into buying a Verizon iPhone off contract. Would the phone be GSM unlocked? I wouldn't be leaving Verizon, but would just be interested in using the phone internationally using GSM SIM.
Well even if it isn't unlocked out of the box, Verizon will unlock it if you call their Global Support Team (see this thread)

Ok guys.

If you watched the Keynote of the 4S announcement, Apple said that it would be unlocked, because they wanted it to be a world phone. It is carrier unlocked so you could ROAM in ANY carrier around the world.
It is no Apple’s mistake, neither AT&T´s.

hi everybody sorry for my english but I'm french

After reading all your messages i decided to buy one this morning at the upper west side apple store

I bought a white 64gb off contract iPhone and it is unlocked as i am using it with Tmobile !

When i paid the seller told me that "Become it comes unlocked you have to agree that your going to use it with at&t"
1 minute earlier she was telling me that the phone was sold locked..

So it does work when you buy it off contract

Damn, I really need an unlocked phone but also need to take advantage of my subsidized pricing. Has the lovely internetz figured out a workaround?

(and no, I don't feel ethically or morally wrong for wanting an unlocked phone despite paying the subsidized price)

I just went to my local Apple store, and I can confirm that I did not get a message, but I never put an AT&T sim in the phone.

I used a Thai sim on the AT&T network to call an AT&T number. I did get a carier selection menu. So I then repeated this process using the T-Mobile network and was able to successfully call the same AT&T number. Then I received a warning SMS from the Thai carrier for potential excessive international data usage.

My concern is that I want AppleCare+.. If Apple doesn't consider this unlocked and I need a replacement, will I get a locked phone instead??

What carrier are you on? Verizon will unlock a subsidized 4S for you if you call their Global Support Team.

i guess news is spreading pretty quickly ?;)
I don't think that's what it is. Yesterday there was a constant 2 hour wait at the first Apple store I went to (I went twice on the way to other places and called twice). The other store close by had 30-45 minute waits all day. And when I finally got mine at the shorter line, the guy was trying to verify with his manager that he got the phone from the right pile. He also initially misheard me asking for an off contract phone. It just didn't seem like many people were asking for off contract. Today could be different but I'm basically referring to how there were a lot of people buying phones yesterday too.

yeah i'm curious to see how the upcoming days will turn out
hopefully it's still easy to get one off contract

Just picked up an off-contract full price version at the SoHo NYC Apple Store. The sales rep did not ask for my account details, but he did tell me it was still going to be "locked". I came home, popped in a OneSimCard travel sim (i.e. a world roaming sim) and everything worked fine.

Do you know what the stock was like in the Soho store?

First time poster here.

I saw the thread and figured I'd give it a shot. I went to the Northlake Apple Store in Charlotte, NC just now (where there is no line and stock of everything because no one still knows the store exists). I told them I wanted to buy the 64GB AT&T iPhone and to ring it up as device only and not give them any of my contact info. The guy asked another girl who said she had just done that same thing and it was ok. I got home and popped in an old UK Three sim and presto everything worked just fine.

Thanks to the OP and everything in this thread for all of the great info!

Edit: For what it's worth. My unlocked iPhone is model MD269LL, which is what it says on the receipt. However, my AT&T iPhone 4S (the one I preordered with a contract) has a model of MD270LL. The box says MD269LL, but the phone is different. I did swap it out in store through service twice due to two lemons, but I don't think that would involve the model number changing. Or would it?

I got a 32GB white AT&T at Charlotte North Lake. Store was empty, but they were out of 16GB white AT&T.

Walked into my Apple Store today and told them I'd like to buy an AT&T phone off-contract. The rep told me it would be locked, but I got back and as you can see in my screenshot, it is indeed unlocked! I just plugged it into iTunes and that message popped up right away.

I picked up a 32gig 4s unsubsidized from the Apple store In Jacksonville today then walked down the mall to the T-Mobile store and bought a prepaid card. Activated with my iPhone 4 sim, got the unlock message and then swapped sims and I gained T-mobile service in about a minute. So I think these phones are unlocked, the question just comes about what happens when an update comes out.

Not that we need any more confirmation, but FWIW I picked up 2 unsubsidized AT&T 4S, just verified they are unlocked as soon as you connect to iTunes.
