I have some quick questions.

After seeing this thread it had me thinking whether or not to exchange my 64gb AT&T iPhone 4s for the off contract AT&T iPhone 4s. I renewed my contract and had to pay the increased price of $650. I decided not to go with the off contract one because it wasn't unlocked. Now that I see it is unlocked I feel $200 extra won't hurt so much.

Ok, now that I have the background stuff out of the way, I'll move on to my questions.

1. This one I might as well ask first since it would pretty much be the roadblock. If the answer to this is no, there is no need to bother looking at the other questions.

Can I exchange my iPhone that I ordered online at an actual retail Apple store? I did some brief research and it seems like no is generally the answer with some exceptions where they give you store credit. I already gave my iPhone 4 to a friend so I don't want to be without a phone while it's in transit.

2. If I do exchange it and pay for the off contract phone will my AT&T contract revert back to my previous one? Can this even be done all at the Apple store or do I have to involve AT&T as well? I would prefer not to deal with AT&T if at all possible.

3. Would the microsim that comes with the off contract phone work right off the bat or would I have to swap the chips?

I know my logic may be confusing to some but if you can, just go with it :) Bottom line is that I'm a little sick of contracts and the sooner I can get out of them the better.

Thanks for the help.

-----------------------------------------------

On a [long] off topic side note about AT&T; I gave my old iPhone 4 to my friend and I merely needed to switch my individual account to a family account and add a line. Just add a line without purchasing any equipment as he already has the iPhone. All we needed was a microsim and a number with the appropriate data plan. The reps agreed that no contract would be required as we were not purchasing any equipment. I am saying 'I' a lot because it's my account, and I'm paying for his service.

Anyways, I'll get to the point. They showed me a two year contract I had to sign. I was flabbergasted. They said no contract required. I asked why am I signing this and he said that they cannot activate iPhones and provide microsims for them without a contract. He then went on to say that it will be immediately nullified in the system so it basically turns that line into a month to month deal. He said that i should get an email within 5 hours (last Friday). I never did, so I called back right before close and asked again why I have no contract related email. He said he submitted the paperwork and AT&T is probably back logged and could take a couple days. I plan to call once a day till this gets resolved. I got the reps business card and had two witnesses (not that it matters) hear him explain the situation and also the fact my receipt says $0.00 and no phone purchased. Hopefully I have some sort of leg to stand on. Either way, if it's at 20 days in and it still is not nullified then I will just cancel the line. I believe it says no ETF within first 30 days. Obviously I could have just walked away and not signed but the 30 "trial" made it acceptable to me. Anyone else think that signing a contract for a phone you provided is a little...odd?

AT&T can be quite irritating. All depends on the rep I guess.

Wao, I just sold my Galaxy SII on eBay for $506 so I feel more confident now to pay $801 full price for the iphone 4S 32GB. My offset will be $300 instead of the full amount.

Need to get those paypal fund transferred to my account first :)

Siri, here I come LOL

Here's the article I was looking for from when Apple began unlocking the iPhone 4: https://www.macrumors.com/2011/06/27/all-no-commitment-att-iphone-4-purchases-coming-unlocked/

If you read that article you will realize this is not a glitch with the at&t 4S being automatically unlocked if you buy it off contract. It clearly says in that article you either have the option of buying a factory unlocked model or buy the at&t iPhone at full price and it will be unlocked automatically. They set that system up a few months ago for the iPhone 4 and it looks like they kept it in place for the 4S which makes sense.

Well I know about that article, but it is possible Apple forgot to "disable" that for the iPhone 4S launch which is what most people are concerned about.

i seriously doubt that. apple isn't going to set up that kind of system for less than 3 months just to get rid of it when new hardware (the 4S) came out. it's more likely they just aren't advertising it to help keep away the scalpers for the launch.

thanks for the article, it has to be official and in the next couple of days we'll find out furthermore. I'll probably be getting my 32GB iphone 4S today :)

Here might be the answer...

This is great information JonaYO, it all seems to point out in support that if we buy our iphone 4S at full retail price we should get them unlocked by default.

Yeah and we don't have to wait for November to come! Christmas comes early you betcha =P

i think you can only purchase it through the Apple online store as mentioned from my screenshot...i don't know if they will sell at it retail outlets like that but online store does because from what i read most people that bought it online managed to get it unlock

I'm sure you can buy full priced phones at retail outlets. However, I'm not sure they come unlocked...

I read it differently, I read it as either you can buy at full cost without extending contract OR you can buy the unlocked version from Apple store. The second reference I take as the one coming in November.

Come to think of it, it makes sense that these phones are unlocked. If they were locked, Apple would just have an influx of people showing up in a month to get the unlocked one since they're essentially paying the same price. It makes sense to get unlocked phones if you're paying full (i.e. no-commitment) price.

I'm looking to get this as a gift for someone in asia. is it too risky to go this route? or just wait a few weeks.

Yes if that is the case then Apple would just spend resources on having us all come back for exchanges on unlocked units.

It is more feasible to just sell them unlocked at full retail price, after all they are the same exact units, they just have to update the ir database to reflect unlocked period.

I'm headed to the Dadeland Apple store today after my hard day at work to get my 32GB since I also was able to sell my Galaxy SII GT-9100 on eBay for $506 and just have to come out with the difference of lik $300 :)

Risky how? The only issue is whether you'll be able to get one at the Apple store if you're not an AT&T customer. Some have been successful, others have not.

I might actually get an unlocked iPhone 4S 16GB. Ill be heading to the Apple store in Charlotte, NC at lunch and ill report back.

Let me know how it went and gl
considering picking one up there as well

a lot of people are buying them in-store and find them to be unlocked
whereas online they are not yet available

Yeah I'll let you know. I'm planning to go during my lunch hour. I work in the Sweetwater area, so just need to take the 826 off 107th ave to the Palmetto expressway and get off on Kendall Drive (should take me 12mts. Drive no traffic) and another 12mts back :)

I know the OP is talking about buying an AT&T phone off-contract. I'm looking into buying a Verizon iPhone off contract. Would the phone be GSM unlocked? I wouldn't be leaving Verizon, but would just be interested in using the phone internationally using GSM SIM.
