Same here, @ apple store San Francisco, I asked for AT&T 32GB black 4S, MC919LL/A and said I wanted to pay full price. They asked if I was an existing iPhone user and I said yes, passed on the AppleCare+ and paid for phone still shrink wrapped.

Dropped tmobile sim into phone, then synched to iTunes to restore from backup. Received tmobile signal, EDGE, I can use SIRI and picture messaging, it was using the settings from my previous phone.

Sweet. No need to wait until November.

Sweet indeed!! I purchased a sprint, however I'm wondering since 4s has both CDMA & GSM, if it's unlocked to use on Verizon or Sprint. If so, maybe I'll cancel my contract and go the prepaid route.

I just got a phone and it unlocked fine in iTunes.
I did NOT provide ATT info. He asked and I was confused and said I wanted it OFF contract. And he said "ooh, ok, misheard you." Then all I had to do was pay and I was out the door.
Like I said, this is not really on the up and up. I just got back from one of the Chicago Apple stores and got rejected, asking for the exact same thing.

It appears some will do it, but it's luck of the draw depending on your rep/store manager.

You asked for an off contract phone and they said no?
Off contract phones are sold everywhere, Apple/ATT stores, why would one manager decide not to?

well based on a few of the replies in this thread,
to sum things up;

with a little bit of luck, asking for an off-contract iPhone @ apple store will get you an unlocked one with no requirement for pulling up your ATT account

stoked to hopefully get mine soon:)

doesn't make any sense to me either
but there were a few others here who also got rejected for this same request

It's not just me; according to others in this thread, they have attempted the same thing as me and failed.

Full retail price/unlocked iPhone 4Ss aren't technically supposed to be on sale yet.

to really get a FULL priced iPhone 4S

wait till the November

most of the other topics here how to get CDMA iPhone to work with GSM.

I figured this would start happening after Gizmodo posted about the unlocked phone workaround this morning. I'd expect it'd be harder to get these in the next few days until the unlocked officially hit the market.

I did notice some others saying they had problems but I couldn't remember if it was something else.

On the day pre-orders opened up, you could pre-order full price phones for delivery on 10/14. I saw them as I was trying to figure out how to order an unlocked phone, until I saw the notice on Apple's site saying they weren't available yet.

On ATT and Verizon's site (I tried Verizon's site first as ATT was swamped) they both had full priced phones but it also wouldn't let you check out until you answered questions about month to month phone/data plans. I didn't try Apple's site that morning.

EDIT: Though I just checked ATT's site, I can't seem to find full retail iPhone 4S phones. But their site is also confusing as heck.

EDIT AGAIN: See attached file. ATT does sell full price phones, I just had to log in to prompt the offer. I don't know how to look up phones without a contract on ATT's site, it's confusing. But it still doesn't explain why you had problems :(

EDIT: more edits. Verizon's site is easier to find the full price phones. The 10/28 shipping date is due to stock I imagine though odd they are all the same date, hopefully not a restriction on accessibility (as inferred from people buying from Apple and ATT's site saying it's available). Still doesn't solve your problem though... :(

I was at the Apple store today at Dadeland Mall Miami, FL but couldn't make up my mind since I kept reading and came accross the possibility that if anything went wrong and we had to take the unlocked iphone 4s for repair, we would get back a locked (at&t) one back.

This discouraged me, but if I do make up my mind I'll go back tomorrow to the Apple store.

Does anyone know Apple's return policy? If I buy one of these and the unlock doesn't work, I would certainly want to return it, but will they accept a return if it has been opened. Also, is there a limit to how many I could buy? I would love to get one for me, my wife, and our oldest son if possible?

You can always return it whitin the return policy period even if you have already opened the iphone. I returned an iphone 4 once that I bought about five months ago and like 7 daya later I changed my mind.

Just picked one up from the apple store a couple hours ago and I can confirm this is true.

Interesting thread. If things stay as they are, I'll go back and pic up another, full price, and sell this one.

did you simply ask for an off contract iphone?

Yup I went to the manhasset, ny one and they only had 64 gb in stock but they were fine with off contract, then I went to roosevelt field and bought the 32 gb off contract and they were fine with it as well.

These phones are 100% without any warranty , that's how I see it ... If I have a problem in few months and take Ur phone to AT&T or apple u are getting a locked iPhone 4s (as those are returns/ refurb) which got its IMei locked previously ! Who every wants a factory unlocked with true warranty I would suggest to wait for few weeks

I just realized people are making a killing off these phones on eBay. New unlocked 16GB are selling for $1200 (which after the ~12% eBay/PayPal fees + international shipping is still a good $300 profit)

I don't think that's true. When you take your phone in for repair, apple can see if it's an authorized unlock (in this case it is) and replaces it with an unlocked one.

BS. Unlocked iPhones are not available until November. I don't care if you paid full price or not, it's locked to your carrier. Until one of you stick in a Tmobile SIM card and get it working I don't believe this is anything but a bug in iTunes or a misreading on the part of us customers.

I paid full price for my iPhone 4 and it's sure as heck not unlocked.

Im sure it is just that somebody sent the wrong phones out. Just like when somebody posts here that they were sent two phones instead of just one. When millions get sent out, there is sure to be a few lucky people getting something they shouldnt have.

Dont be a hater because you didnt get one.

funny most of the sellers are all based in the UK
