Just got back from the Palo Alto downtown Apple Store, stock was low so I had to settle for a 32 GB Black. The door lady insisted that the phone would be locked, but I knew better. Just connected to iTunes and BOOM, got the message.

Thanks OP!!

BTW - after this message, I can restore from iCloud and keep my lock, right? Should be unlocked forever and ever and ever?

For those of you with the unlocked 4s using tmobile how is the internet speed ?? I understand its only using edge but does it seem fast enough to you or is this a deal breaker ???

Considering I have used my 3Gs on TMO for 2.5 years I find the speed acceptable if not a bit slow. I am on wi-fi 85% of the time so it's not an issue for me. I also only pay $6 a month for internet so I don't complain too loudly :)

I'm already at the Apple store at Dadeland Mall in Miami, FL. I'm about to walk into the store to inquire about a 32BG black iphone4S. I'll see what happens and will report back to this thread.

No problem! Yes you can restore and everything will be fine. I did it twice because I couldn't believe what I saw the first time lol.

I can happily report that I am home from the Apple store and after tracking down T-Mobile micro sims I am now setting up my new UNLOCKED 32gb white iPhone 4s.

I'm so grateful for this thread and not having to wait weeks to buy my phone.

Thank you to the OP and others that posted about this!

How much did you paid?

Guys pls, help me out! I am traveling around the US and wondering may i buy iphone 4s at full price without the contract? I dont have a SSN and USA passport. Pls describe how did you buy the iphone in app store? Do u need to show any identity cards or a SSN? Many thanks.

blackhk, just walk in and buy it. Tell them you want an AT&T iPhone 4S, but you don't want to sign or renew a contract. Someone may insist that the phone will be locked to AT&T, just nod and agree and say OK (it's a lie!).

If you pay cash, no ID required. If you pay credit card, just show your driver's license or passport. They will give you a sealed 4S box, and you're done. That's all, I was in and out in 2 minutes at the Apple Store.

Full retail for 32GB phone -- $749 + tax = around $808 in Santa Clara County, CA.

Thank you I'm here inside the Apple store at Dadeland Mall in Miami, thinking about pulling the trigger.

It should come out to like $801 on my credit cars if I decide to do buy it.

That is Great! Thanks a lot!!"

Because the model number corresponds with a locked AT&T iPhone 4s, if--for whatever reason--you need to exchange it, it'll be replaced with a locked phone AT&T phone. With replacements, Apple doesn't distinguish between those who paid full price or not.

Is this not a concern for anyone? Thoughts?

Anyone have experience with an ATT store off contract phone?
Apple store here has a 2 hour wait but there's an ATT sore nearby.
Thanks.

Those of you who've bought the phone at full retail from an Apple Store...you had to pay sales tax, right?

That's the only reason I want to wait till next month to buy unlocked online. Sales tax where I live is almost 10% so I'd like to save the $60 bucks in taxes.

EDIT: nevermind, just realized apple.com charges tax also :(

Where could you buy it online without sales tax?
Amazon and NewEgg (both no tax in my state) don't carry it.

Apple.com (in November)

EDIT: nevermind, it showed no tax until I went into checkout...sneaky

so tempting to buy one right now... but u may have a point^

Ok so we know that if you buy a full retail phone from Apple, it will come SIM unlocked.

But what about us Verizon folks?

Unlocked forever?

I bought one of these today based on the postings here on macrumors.

But isn't it possible for AT&T to remotely lock these at a future date? They have all the IMEI numbers, do they not? Just as Sprint is promising to.

I am worried about losing my unlock down the road....

The activation status is supposed to get transferred to the new phone. I've heard of people getting factory unlocked phones serviced in the US and receiving an unlocked phone despite having the new one having an AT&T model number

I believe that carriers can relock the phone if they choose to since that is what Sprint is doing with their GSM portion of the iPhone 4S.
