For those of you with the unlocked 4s using tmobile how is the internet speed ?? I understand its only using edge but does it seem fast enough to you or is this a deal breaker ???
Just got back from the Palo Alto downtown Apple Store, stock was low so I had to settle for a 32 GB Black. The door lady insisted that the phone would be locked, but I knew better. Just connected to iTunes and BOOM, got the message.
Thanks OP!!
BTW - after this message, I can restore from iCloud and keep my lock, right? Should be unlocked forever and ever and ever?
I can happily report that I am home from the Apple store and after tracking down T-Mobile micro sims I am now setting up my new UNLOCKED 32gb white iPhone 4s.
I'm so grateful for this thread and not having to wait weeks to buy my phone.
Thank you to the OP and others that posted about this!
Full retail for 32GB phone -- $749 + tax = around $808 in Santa Clara County, CA.
blackhk, just walk in and buy it. Tell them you want an AT&T iPhone 4S, but you don't want to sign or renew a contract. Someone may insist that the phone will be locked to AT&T, just nod and agree and say OK (it's a lie!).
If you pay cash, no ID required. If you pay credit card, just show your driver's license or passport. They will give you a sealed 4S box, and you're done. That's all, I was in and out in 2 minutes at the Apple Store.
Where could you buy it online without sales tax? Those of you who've bought the phone at full retail from an Apple Store...you had to pay sales tax, right?
That's the only reason I want to wait till next month to buy unlocked online. Sales tax where I live is almost 10% so I'd like to save the $60 bucks in taxes.

Amazon and NewEgg (both no tax in my state) don't carry it.
Yup, it works.
I didn't even put a SIM in it, it just said BAM... unlocked.
Because the model number corresponds with a locked AT&T iPhone 4s, if--for whatever reason--you need to exchange it, it'll be replaced with a locked phone AT&T phone. With replacements, Apple doesn't distinguish between those who paid full price or not.
Is this not a concern for anyone? Thoughts?
guys I can confirm that this work.

I bought one of these today based on the postings here on macrumors.
But isn't it possible for AT&T to remotely lock these at a future date? They have all the IMEI numbers, do they not? Just as Sprint is promising to.
I am worried about losing my unlock down the road....
