Those are poor numbers, id be concerned if I got such unsatisfactory performance.

What are you doing that would require over 1 megabyte per second for a mobile connection? You enter every one of these threads and call performance "poor."

I'm sure 1mbps for most folks will be more than adequate.

Verizon won't go much over 1.5 on a good day in my experience. At&t you can double that. I live in an area where At&t is edge . If At&t was 3g in my area, i would be using there service.

I hope At&t people are reading these posts before switching to Verizon! Both carriers have there strengths and weaknesses.

Not sure why At&t 3g area is so SMALL. Oh well For now Verizon is the only choice.

On an EVDO network? Not really. Comparing it to HSPA, then yes. But that said, I rarely see anything close to the peak HSPA performance out of AT&T. AT&T claims up to 7.2Mbps for downstream data, but they simply haven't rolled out the capacity for many people to actually see that speed.

As fun as your attacks on Verizon's 3G network are... it's becoming a broken record. New bag of tricks, please.

I'm in northern Michigan and I'm getting 1.49 Mbps down and .65 Mbps up. Still WAY faster than Edge, which is all AT&T has in my area.

Not sure about all the Verizon/AT&T bashing. Pick the carrier you like, what does it matter what everyone else has? Geez. Worry about something that's important.

I'm getting around .8Kbps-1.4Mbps regularly. Very pleased. Why do so many people forget that the important thing is how speeds translate to actual performance? For example, I get around 6Mbps for home Internet but when I download a file, it's never goes up to 6Mbps. I wonder how web pages load side by side.

ATT (Charlotte, NC)

3 bars
Ping: 204
DL: 3.23
Up: 1.14

I just did the test from inside of my house with 3 bars of service. I've always experienced great data speeds from ATT, but I had issues with dropped calls. In the past 6-8 months I have noticed way fewer dropped calls. I am keeping ATT for now until everyone rolls "4g" out and go from there. I'm very happy with my roll over/A-list/unlimited data plan.

I'm glad that Verizon got the iPhone though, I think it'll end up helping ATT iPhone costumers in the long run.

Guys: how is everybody repeatedly overlooking the part where the OP mentions that he has a netbook with a built-in Verizon 3G modem that is smoking his iPhone in terms of performance, when he tests the iPhone and his netbook back-to-back in the exact same areas? (By his stated measurements, his netbook is seeing 4x the download performance of his iPhone, on the same cellular network and in the same physical area.)

To me, that tells me there is something wrong with the phone, not the network. Take it to Apple and have them check it out.

See if AT&T is faster in your area.
Results will vary per location.

I get 3mbps in major city areas. On wifi, I got 11 mbps and I do get that, too. So, it is not the phone but the network. Get the 4g mifi when it comes out, if you got 4g in your area. Me too, I get wifi at work and home!!

There's a difference between 1Mbps (megabit/sec) and 1MBps (megabyte/sec). In this case it's Mbps (megabit/sec).

as of this a.m. wifi network at house 13.37 down, 16.01 up
3g = 1.o dowload, .64 up/ seems like its pretty consistent with 3g at my house but its quick on internet sites on phone..

I have never had an issue with ATT when it comes to calls or data. I was curious what kind of speed i was getting while i was reading this thread. So i ran a speed test and the numbers speak for themselves. Im located in buffalo, ny.

I know people who don't even now how to work their phone's WiFi. They're always on data. Even streaming Pandora all day... Crazy.

I've found that there's WiFi damn near every place I park my butt, so I have very little need for data except for when I'm on the road.

Unfortunately, any helpful posts on the actual topic are drowned out by posts from people talking about AT&T.

It's probably VZW's network being congested right now with all the activation and usage from the new iphones . Whoever said they would not be affected by the iphone's heavy usage should eat their socks now

Please read the thread before posting. Again, for anyone who wants to jump in without reading the original post:

The OP says his laptop gets good speeds in the same location that his new iPhone does not.

So it's not likely to be congestion.

Told you so.

Thanks for being an contributing member to the site, and likely society.

OP, the phone appears faulty. Obviously this is all based on the fact that your laptop is doing fine.

Verizon iPhone4 from my house in S. Charlotte (varies from 1 to 3 bars)
Ping 300-400ms
DL: 0.74
UL: 0.59

Makes a big difference if I place phone down or hold (without case) I get almost no DL/UL speed 0.09 and 0.00. SpeedTest dot net

Luckly WiFi gets 11.5 DL and 0.9 UL in house....

for what its worth... when I got my iphone 4 on ATT at launch... I had next to no data service. webpages would literally just sit there loading, while my friends with 3gs (also att) in the exact same location (ie sitting right next to each other on a desk) would have working much faster service. This lasted for me about a week and in that time I visted ATT and apple stores thinking something was wrong with my iphone. they told me it was the network being overloaded which never made any sense why an iphone4 wouldn't work but all other phones did... regardless, after about a week or so the problem went away and my phone has been working great ever since, now rightly faster than the older models.
