i can not belive i am going to post on this. But here we go. Results of carriers vary not just by location by time period. No carrier has a network that is 100%. If you think 300kbps is too slow and another carrier that offers the same device you want then go with them. The two major power house carriers now have the device. That said i am actually getting better performance than i did with my orignal droid on my vzw iphone. Never dropped a call before never since the upgrade. I get slightly better speeds on the device. The fact that it has A4 for me has made a huge change even though the data is slower than maybe ATT in my area i get the page displayed faster. That said your millage may vary and test your area. For me all areas i frequent do not have ATT signal let alone data connection. This left me with a useless brick on ATT now i am no longer left with a brick in those areas may not burn my pants off with speed but when i need to know if i got mail it works.

the only criteria missing in this thesis is time. did we ever give the network time to sort itself out after a major product launch with many folks activating and testing all at once?

I am already seeing posts about how the speeds have improved in the last 12 hours. The early adopters are probably getting poor speeds, then seeing some improvement.

VZW will probably never reach AT&T network speeds. As long as I can hit around 1.5-2.0 mbps, I can live with that.

I think making final judgment now is a little premature. Now the AT&T fanboys love this VZW network being slow business.

Let's see what happens. If no improvement across the board at all in 3 weeks, well I'll be singing a different tune.
We shall see.

I think 1.25-1.5mbps is liveable where you can use the iPhone with no glitches.

for what its worth... when I got my iphone 4 on ATT at launch... I had next to no data service. webpages would literally just sit there loading, while my friends with 3gs (also att) in the exact same location (ie sitting right next to each other on a desk) would have working much faster service. This lasted for me about a week and in that time I visted ATT and apple stores thinking something was wrong with my iphone. they told me it was the network being overloaded which never made any sense why an iphone4 wouldn't work but all other phones did... regardless, after about a week or so the problem went away and my phone has been working great ever since, now rightly faster than the older models.

Exactly. Same thing happened to me. That's why I said it was network congestion.

Hmmm.

Makes me think that the phone's PRL (preferred roaming list) is out of date. That could cause it to prefer connecting to a more distant or less equipped cell.

Isn't there a *2xx number to update that on Verizon?

I suppose it's also possible that the OP is pretty far from a cell, and the netbook's modem can transmit/receive with fewer errors. (Actually, the netbook's speeds aren't that great, either.)

OP, have you tried different locations by now? I mean miles apart.

I tried doing the PRL update and did not have any increase in speed. Also when performing the speed tests, I always have 4 or 5 bars.

I have tried the test about 10 miles apart and the results are the same

I thought this also, but then how do we explain the datacards getting normal results? Maybe VZ has segmented iPhones apart from all other data and its iPhone network congestion?

Also someone mentioned finding another iPhone in the area to see if it is a hardware issue. My roommate also just received his VZ iPhone and when running speed tests at the same time, he experiences the same poor results

we can hypothesize all we want. Bottom line is we have to wait and see.

if you give up now, you're giving up without exploring all the options (the last one being network congestion/new iphones all being activated at once.)

same thing happened to AT&T when the IP4 came out.

stop the hysteria. everyone just chill. go outside, go for a walk. Play with your children. Go live life. It's just a phone. a real cool phone.

If the OP has tested the phone and netbook, side by side, in different locations and at different times of day with the same result, then the most logical conclusions are that either something is wrong with the phone or Verizon is throttling 3g speeds on the iPhone.

if it makes ya feel better my speed is:

3 bars in home 3G
0.20 Mbps - D'Load
0.08 Mbps - U'Load

Your Verizon iPhone has deemed you unworthy. Take it back for the next contestant.

Just joking do what works best for you. Mine is great.:D

I would suggest doing the *228 option 2 PRL update, I went from 3-4 bars here in Wichita to 4-5 bars after updating the PRL. It couldn't hurt.

Just did a side by side test between My Droid Inc and new iPhone both on Verizon in my house, roughly 3 bars on the iPhone and 1 on the Inc

3G - iPhone
0.36Mbps - D'Load
0.18 Mbps - U'Load

3G - Incredible
0.51 Mbps - D'Load
0.51 Mbps - U'Load

both actually load pages at a decent speed though as much as the numbers look sucky, Neither have WiFi on either

EDIT: After a *228 update the iphone went to .57/.29 I really dont think the update had anything to do with it though, Each time I test, the numbers jump

be interesting to see a daily test results and see if any upward trend in the speeds. I really think the ultra slow speeds some early users are experiencing have to be temporary.

we'll never be AT&T speed. But its got to get better than 0.51 mbps at some point.

thanks for sharing.

Also, try it again tonight after all the carriers pump up the signals. Say 11pm or so.

Your speeds are below what's advertised. Don't return the phone. Call Tech Support. They'll probably open a ticket and get you squared away within a few days.

My speeds on VZW 3G:
1.92Mbps D/L
.75 Mbps U/L

Probably the fastest speeds I've gotten on 3G in my home since I've been a customer.

Slower Verizon speeds

I posted earlier this week....I don't have an iphone yet but where we live I have to use a wireless device due to the fact we don't have cable, phone or any other service coming in. We currently are using a USB device for use on the laptop and the desktop....prior to Monday we never....and I mean never lost internet service here and internet speeds were pretty good (never tested but we were very happy with it) Since Monday we have had intermittent service, very slow download speeds (phone lines are faster now) and it been very frustrating. I even called Verizon on Monday night and had 3 dropped calls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm ready for an upgrade and it will be a iphone but not so sure now its going to be through Verizon, Verizon service has always been amazing but since Monday my opinion sure is changing. I'm going to give it a month and see how Verizons service is but if it continues on the path it is now.....AT&T here we come!

Mine are crazy different from the first 24 hours. Mine were all well below .5Mbps and were closer to .3 on avg and now I'm getting 1Mbps to 1.6Mbps in the same location at the same time of day. I would say don't panic and use your 14 days to test and see if it improves.

I'm absolutely shocked to report that my VZW Iphone has bars where the AT&T one doesn't. I'm also shocked to report that, when both have full bars, the AT&T Iphone is faster. Pick your poison, and quit whining if you make the wrong choice. You were warned.

It's not a matter of being warned. It's a matter of making an educated choice based on which carrier has better service in your area. And everyone's definition of "better" will be different. Individual needs vary, so be aware that what you read here can be quite biased.

Talk to your friends and co-workers. Ask them if they're happy with their wireless carrier. Ask if data speeds and voice reliability are acceptable.

Educate yourself; do your due diligence and make an informed choice. You've got 14 (or is it 30?) days to change your mind.

It's funny you should ask for that.

I've been doing tests for a couple days. Aside from one STRANGE LOW DIP (bad reception ad ODU) I'm seeing nothing but improvement over time. Unfortunately with the mass release of the rest of the phones tomorrow, I'm expecting another dip.

What I would be interested in, is some speed tests from OTHER Verizon phones. Are the Droids running slow on the network right now too?

EDIT: Sorry picture is so large, it was the first screenshot I've taken from my iPhone and it's much larger than I expected. And I don't know how to specify image height using bbcode, does it work like HTML?

Wow seriously getting tired of the AT&T trolls.

The Verizon network is not having problems...the last release was for CUSTOMERS ONLY. 95% of them most likely already had a smart phone and Verizon is not expecting the 4G LTE network to cover there current network coverage until 2013.

And I seriously dont see why you all need 10mbps download speeds on a phone...its a PHONE, not a LAPTOP.

That's the only explanation that makes any sense. When the 4 came out on AT&T, we were experiencing these EXACT same problems. About a week after launch, speeds went back to normal (before plummeting again, but that was an isolated problem in NYC with the radio towers). People on their 3G and 3GS phones were loading data just fine during the hysteria. We all thought it was hardware issue with the phones themselves, but it really wasn't.

You guys will just have to wait it out. I'm sure it'll be fine after a week or two once people get everything activated and the honeymoon phase is over.

What are you doing that would require over 1 megabyte per second for a mobile connection? You enter every one of these threads and call performance "poor."

I'm sure 1mbps for most folks will be more than adequate.

I guess we're just spoiled by 4.8Mbps speeds on AT&T with a really slow day being 2.5

Everything I do needs more speed than 1Mbps. Why specify a "mobile connection?" That's my only connection.
You shouldn't have to compromise from your phone to your computer
