It took them 3 YEARS to realize the Mac Pro was insufficient, and they let it languish while they ponder. They have more money and resources than anyone, yet they can't execute. Sad.

As I mentioned in another post, appropriate CPU and GPU improvements have been pretty darn slim during those 3 years.

I'm really glad Apple is listening to feedback, as I am definitely interested in the redesigned Mac Pro. That being said I do love my 2016 MacBook Pro too. I don't edit 4K video, but for graphic design, coding and audio editing it has been a fantastic machine. I guess I was just lucky that it was compatible with my existing workflow.

Better late than never, Apple. Although I'm frustrated for the wait, I'm glad the ship has FINALLY been redirected!

I was on the verge of jumping ship for my desktop, but now...

Not surprising from what we see in the MBP forum.

This is a interesting point. Many people on here (Apple die hard defenders) have been saying the MBP forum isn't representative of it's customer base. I liked how you pointed out the this has been the general feeling from here. What is scary is how out of Touch TIM and Apple executives are. Never has Apple been so out of touch with it's core user base!

Its been in limbo for 3 years, so its good that Apple laid out a roadmap of what will happen.
Not sure why it took this long but its definitely welcome news

I think this is the scariest part of all. Tim completely missed the mark on touch bar, mac pro, and in my humble opinion Apple Watch (gold watch was most glaring part). The fact that Apple products are playing catch up to Samsung andi is now always in reactive mode shows it can't anticipate what customers want. Seems like the only thing Tim listens to is mass customer outcry or Taylor Swift.

let's be honest what is going on with Apple. Tim inherited the golden hen from Steven Jobs, sold those eggs in China but instead of making more golden eggs, Tim decided to **** the golden hen to death. Thanks TIM!

Why would it take 2 more years to develop a desktop?

Yah, this is bizarre. So they basically admitted to neglecting the Mac Pro? Was it all about chasing the dollars, and consumer products made more sense to focus on? Think about how many dollars that they've lost as a result of their neglect... entire companies would've switched away from Apple due to the uncertainty that they allowed to grow.

They made a big mistake with this. This is the first time that I truly do think Tim doesn't have all of his ducks in a row. But at least they have now corrected course, or at least set the intention to.

The next Mac Pro will likely be very cool and very different from what's available from the competing PC market. But I just hope that they don't have a repeat of the Mac Pro. What a gong show it has been. A "modular" approach is actually very smart. Smaller parts that connect together. It might be easier to design and manufacture those simpler components, rather than a single, complete device. And upgradeability may become a "feature".

I agree. The view that iPads can completely replace Macs is very short sighted. Macs are required by many professionals and developers to create the apps and content sold on iTunes and the App Store. The Mac should be viewed by Apple as an investment in driving services growth, not a dwindling legacy product category.

I use Macs professionally and have for close to 15 years at this point but as a web developer and sysadmin type, it's not like my performance needs are over the top. With all of that said, the Mac Pro's lack of updates was concerning—despite the fact that I would probably never own one myself. I'm glad to see this sudden about-face on the matter. I know it's easy for people to say, "Why should they care? Macs are only a fraction of their sales now." Queue the people saying iPads are going to supplant Macs (hint: they won't and can't—especially for developers).

You want the best content and the development taking place on Macs, period. And a vast majority of companies out there would love to have a small fraction of Apple's pie. It might be a small fraction, but it's still measured in billions. It's not like it's some kind of loss leader or anything.

2019?!
It's a professional workstation-grade desktop and not a highly integrated mobile device where it's a matter of millimeters.
Every retard could put new hardware inside classic Mac Pro's case, call it Mac Pro SE and more shockingly it could actually be a good product.

Even if you want to do a new thing and not a SE, don't tell me this takes 2 years of time.
I personally know someone at Dell and they can create completely redesigned compact workstations with new hardware, including board, cooling, case and everything in 6 months. Sure, their casing is ugly as hell, but other than that they are great machines. I'm pretty sure creating the same thing with a prettier face doesn't take 4 times as long.

2012 Mac Pro case with 2017 xeons and GPUs, as you said call it a Mac Pro SE and will out sell whatever trash can proprietary crap they come with in a few years. The SE could sell in 2017 and be a great machine .....but no they will find a way to glue stuff and force you to buy apple only expansion devices .... too little , too late

"Constant negativity". Really? A purely speculative statement from Them Holwerda of all people is now considered sufficient for an article on Macrumors? LOL this place has gone to the dogs.

I suspect some major surprises over the next couple of years.

- Return of the 17 inch MacBook Pro model in 2012-15 style chassis
- 4k OLED display
- Infinity style display except above web cam bezel
- Return of USB A in addition to two USB C ports
- Return of ports such as HDMI and SD Card reader
- Slightly thicker 2012-15 style chassis to accommodate larger battery, DDR4 RAM
- Back to using the latest nVidia Graphics
- Touch Bar dropped, return of function keys, Touch ID stays
- Butterfly keys dropped in favor of older style keyboard
- Return of smaller track pad
- Return of the back lit Apple logo
- Return of boot chime

"As Apple announced, we'll be getting a new Mac Pro and an iMac Pro as a result. In addition, Apple is said to be exploring additional Retina MacBook Pro models without the Touch Bar, and other pro-oriented features, such as hooking an iPad Pro up to a Mac to use it as a Cintiq-like device.'

This just reeks of not being 100% sure or 100% committed to the decisions they make. If they're hedging their bets for the touch bar abomination then they're clearly not sure. The same goes with the Mac Pro trash can being emptied. One wonders what they'll do to the iMac next which will cause them to seriously backtrack when they panic. I mean, look at Microsoft with their iMac competing machine and you can understand Apple simply doesn't know where to go.

But if you don't know where to go you need to figure it out FAST. The touch bar thing and the Mac Pro sound like token attempts to execute on a vision of incompetence. Really, Cook should resign at this point before it gets any worse.

I think a comeback of a modular PowerMac G5 design would be pretty awesome. An Apple branded "normal" motherboard with their custom efi firmware which allows you to install macOS, and the tower designed by apple itself would be pretty neat for the pro users who need a powerful system and the latest tech. Need more ram? Just add it. Need more GPU power? Just buy a newer graphics card. More internal disk space? Just buy another M.2 SSD. So a PC built by apple, but with macOS. Plus it would be environmental friendlier.
Sadly I doubt that we will ever see something like this because they wouldn't get money when you are upgrading it.

Lip service only until we see a product release date announced. I never thought I would see the day where Apple would be announcing vaporware, until now. They really effed up, and this announcement proves it. I have not seen anything from this company in years beyond meaningless lip service, that signals interest in the professional market. I still have many Apple products, but as of March of this year, my Pro Tools PC is now an 8 (16 threaded) core 32 gig Windows 10 machine with all the latest hardware and standards, and has absolutely amazing performance per dollar compared to the nMP that uses 4 year old processors and hardware(AND cost me 3x less in cash).

I got an intel nuc skull computer for $950. It is so small I hung it on the wall. It has a 7th gen i7, 256 super fast ssd, and 32gig memory - and usb-c along with standart usb. It runs a 4k 40 inch monitor. If they can make a cute, relatively inexpensive, fully upgradable (except video card), why can't Apple?

Honestly, I feel like maybe SJ would have fired Phill Schiller over this. Going from "can't innovate anymore my ass" while releasing it to "well, we designed ourselves into a corner" just a few years later. They obviously did not get user input AT ALL before designing the Pro, instead opting for form over function.

Unfortunately, it appears the R&D side of this company died with SJ.

Nope, they have been busy making a bigger iPad, and two laptops... and endless countless ridiculously high numbers of different style watch bands.....

I think it's a clear sign their own sheer arrogance has blinded them and all the money they've been making..

EDIT:: oh I forgot about the new Apple TV which is cool to be honest.
Don't forget all the time and resources they put into the car project that apparently died an ugly death of some sort, to be resurrected in the form of a billion dollar investment in China's driving service...I'm still trying to figure out how that's supposed to benefit any of Apple's usual customers. I suppose it's part of some great plan to make more money for Apple without having to produce an "insanely great product" anytime soon.

Can't they make MacBook Pros thick enough to house an Ethernet port? Its just so crucial in many situations. I wouldn't buy any machine without one. No, adapters aren't a solution, people need some native ports at least. You can make more than one type of laptop can't you Apple? Make a real Pro laptop with some industry standards, go all out and offer a socketed desktop CPU even but just garnish the machine with needed ports. Ethernet isn't going anywhere for many years.
