Do you actually believe that "none of the top Apple brass" use a Mac or can you see what an absurd statement that is? What's your source? A random blogger with a chip on his shoulder?
No, no source, no chip!
Just someone that uses MACs and hate to see them being ignored so.
I think Apple needs to let some real world users onto their development team.
They're like; "who knew they wouldn't like the new MacBook pro! "
Everyone :)

And so finally we have been heard. This isn't the same Apple from the Steve Jobs era; anyone using their products for more than a few years can attest to that. Products are now clearly marketed towards the 'Kardashian Consumer' and utter neglect for the Pros because Timmy Cook thought we would blindly follow forever. Apple, I've got you on a leash and I'll be voting with my wallet.

Ooohhhh... what a surprise..... Apple transformed the MacBook Pro in an expensive toy, and then had "negative response" and "constant negativity" from Pro users....

A negative response from your customers usually means you're not listening to your customers. As I said before, there's only one Steve who knew what each of us needed. Now we've got a rubber dinghy full of Apple execs on the high sees who let the oars fall overboard. It doesn't end well for them.

I don't think anyone is overly against a touch bar. But with the new Macbook Pro, it felt more like we were getting less in some areas that mattered for the "Pros", and in return "shiny" touch bar. The mockery is that the Touch Bar wasn't enough to elevate the computer above it's shortcomings.

I like the idea. I'd like to see it expanded on. I would also like to see Apple not remove the physical row or escape key to do it.
Perfectly stated your lordship!

There is a name for this: vapourware

Never would have thought Apple would sink so low as to move from only talking about shipping products to the Microsoft-90's style of promising the coolest world imaginable without actually shipping something real. Apple must feel the pressure of alternative platforms if they resort to this kind of tactic.

You laugh, but at one time top of the line Macs were only a couple hundred more than part-for-part comparable PCs. Those days are LONG gone, and I don't see them ever returning.

I remember those days. I used to be able to successfully win arguments about the "apple tax" being a myth.... Fat bloody chance these days of explaining why a machine is £1,000 more than it should be.... :(

Ship in 2019 with Today's components.

I'm not sure that's what we want...

Agreed! It needs to be on the market by mid year 2018 at the latest! There is no reason why it couldn't be put on a fast track. And it better be a Wow'er of a box.

I suspect some major surprises over the next couple of years.

- Return of the 17 inch MacBook Pro model in 2012-15 style chassis
- 4k OLED display
- Infinity style display except above web cam bezel
- Return of USB A in addition to two USB C ports
- Return of ports such as HDMI and SD Card reader
- Slightly thicker 2012-15 style chassis to accommodate larger battery, DDR4 RAM
- Back to using the latest nVidia Graphics
- Touch Bar dropped, return of function keys, Touch ID stays
- Butterfly keys dropped in favor of older style keyboard
- Return of smaller track pad
- Return of the back lit Apple logo
- Return of boot chime
I'm fine with that as long as these forums don't fill up with people complaining that it feels like 2009 again...

I'm not sure what the stronger contingent is, the "change for the sake of change" folks or the "I'm the one true Pro" folks, but I do know that if Apple starts making decisions based on complaints, it's going to get confusing for them fast...

I find it worse that it took them this long to figure it out and that it is gonna take so long to release a new product.

The world keeps moving and people are going to be looking away from Apple for the next two years.

I'm really glad Apple is listening to feedback, as I am definitely interested in the redesigned Mac Pro. That being said I do love my 2016 MacBook Pro too. I don't edit 4K video, but for graphic design, coding and audio editing it has been a fantastic machine. I guess I was just lucky that it was compatible with my existing workflow.
See here's the thing, you don't edit 4K video...but the iPhones record 4K video. If you wanted to, could you edit 4K video on your 2016 MacBook Pro with ease? Could you clean up parts that are over exposed, reprocess copies that are easily distributed to friends and family?

That is what I need to do with a 90 minute 4K video I took of my daughter's concert. I haven't tried it yet. I don't know where to begin, yet. My husband hasn't had much time but tried fiddling around a little with a copy of the video on his three year old iMac and said only it was going to be a bear and he didn't have time to mess with it anytime soon.

Lip service only until we see a product release date announced. I never thought I would see the day where Apple would be announcing vaporware, until now. They really effed up, and this announcement proves it. I have not seen anything from this company in years beyond meaningless lip service, that signals interest in the professional market. I still have many Apple products, but as of March of this year, my Pro Tools PC is now an 8 (16 threaded) core 32 gig Windows 10 machine with all the latest hardware and standards, and has absolutely amazing performance per dollar compared to the nMP that uses 4 year old processors and hardware(AND cost me 3x less in cash).

Maybe they have been spooked? The pre announcement is the old trick used by evil companies like Intel and Microsoft in years gone past to stop others defecting to AMD and Microsoft competitors. I think that's largely why they've done it to stem the outflow of future dollars.

I mean, think of the message if you can do the equivalent work out with the Mac. You start to live outside the Apple eco system so today you're trashing your Apple trashcan Mac but tomorrow you're buying a shiny new Windows phone instead of the latest headphone jack-less, overpriced iPhone.

I think Apple should look to the Microsoft Surface Studio (albeit more powerful hardware) for inspiration on how to win back their core constituency of creative professionals with a new iMac. They have the Apple Pencil; they need to make that joker work with the iMac.

Using the iPad as a cintiq is thinking in the right direction but still that screen is only 12". Main problem with iPad Pro is that without pro-level apps like photoshop, etc it's just a big toy....regardless of how powerful it is. Notice that not even Apple has made Final Cut Pro for the iPad.

There was nothing wrong with the old Mac Pro except that the hardware was getting stale and the thing was huge and heavy. However, real power users need expand ability and access to modern hardware and graphic cards. That means the next gen machine will need to bigger than a bathroom waste basket. The idea of adding everything on via external connections always struck me as dumb and I'm glad they're realizing it. Who on earth wants a millions little boxes everywhere and a million power supplies when you could just house it in one bigger box with one power cord?!

For the iMac, Mini, and Mac Pro Apple should have stolen an idea from Alienware and support an external graphics amplifier. That way people that want more power could get it. Right now there is absolutely nothing and that's just taking a dump on your loyal users.

Damn straight. People are happy NOW, that Apple Leadership has acknowledge their mistakes. But the LONG wait is going to be intolerable to endure for some, and simply impossible for many.

We may see the Apple car before we see the new Mac pro.

By the way, where are all those people who complained that we the "pros" were complaining too much?

Here.

I continue to believe that doing away with the Mac Pro remains the right move in the long run, but perhaps, a concession simply had to made for current users in the short-to-medium run.

The Mac Pro has been granted a stay of education, nothing more.
