If Apple is putting a coating on the stainless, or we are covering the antenna with our cases... why didn't Apple just keep the damn antenna *inside* the phone to begin with. Funny, the revolutionary "external," "the phone is the antenna" design appears to be less than ideal. I'd rather have a bit less reception but be able to hold my phone in a more realistic manner, and without the need to spend $$$ on a case I shouldn't need.

Because that particular construct is patented, the patent holder has sued Apple for violating the patent and Apple considers the likelihood of loosing the case high. In which case that would be the end of Apple Iphone business as the patent holder does not need to give a license to Apple.

Well, this an OPPORTUNITY for apple to let go of their pride and admit that they messed up. I think to ignore the problem or even deny that there is a major problem will hurt Apple's image, not preserve it.

They need to do a Recall, refund money and redesign the so called game changer.

If they do that, then it needs to be done NOW!!! BEFORE they start international launches and perpetuate the problem! This could have HUGE ramifications, but the earlier the better! It could be something as simple as putting some type of clear coating around the band! I don't know. I guess I will reevaluate when I actually get mine and they issue the software update!

wanna bet

Correct. As an apple stock holder Im not worried about the issue. People need to just get case, you can benefit in so many ways. Now I do think they should be giving the bumper away for free but whatever. It really isn't a big deal

I pay for Apple's products because of how they look. The bumper affects how it looks. It also affects how it works on the 30-dollar base-station they sell (that I bought) because the bumper won't allow it to fit into the recharger.

So another 30 bucks to make a 30 dollar Apple product not work.

Apple's response to this problem is shameful. And hopefully doesn't indicate a new direction for the company where profit comes before customer satisfaction. Nintendo handed out free cases for all Wii owners for their Wii remotes which worked PERFECTLY FINE without them. Apple says to return it rather than admit their fault.

I am disappoint.

More powerful companies than Apple have tried.

No kidding. Just shows the ignorance and arrogance of Apple iBrats.

IF the post wasn't out and out sarcasm and parody in the first place. Around here, one can never be sure.

While I agree this is a big issue, I STILL think it is being blown out of proportion. I guarantee that half of the people whining, use a case or were planning to buy a case. I, honest to god, have NOT DROPPED ONE CALL with my iPhone 4. I just bought an awesome case and always use cases either way. Maybe that is why my phone always works and looks brand new even 2 years after owning it.

I have no idea why people wouldn't want to protect a glass phone. I guess thats just me though.

Apple had better face up to the fact that this issue has been a huge black eye for it, one it can neither shrug off nor get to disappear by inventing some creative excuse. Apple really needs to come completely clean and deliver a real fix.

Shouldn't you be compiling a Linux app or something? I'm sure you have something better to do... There are many people in this forum that love Apple products, but that love doesn't equate to blind faith that everything Apple or Steve is good. They make mistakes. They can fail from time to time (hey I used fail properly in a sentence... nice).

The stereotypical Apple "fanboy" is out there to be sure, but I think most people around here are sensible, at least the ones who take a minute to think and the non-trolls don't bow to anyone.

interesting that you at 1st try to decipher a fanboy to a lover of apple products yet you do a great disservice by suggesting i'm a linux fanboy of some sort

let's take a step back - all joking aside about blind faith - i think consumers need to step up a bit here and demand some free cases.

the problem is real and hopefully resolved by the time the white iphone 4 comes out :D

btw about the bowing - people have steve job posters on this forum. they're doing something that's for sure. ;)

I truly wonder how bad this problem really is. I wonder if we'll ever know.

What i do know, from participating in many internet forum wars...typically you have about 10% of the posters on either side that know what they are talking about and a solid 80% (give or take) that just pick a side and start talking out their ass or just outright lying and have no real clue or experience about the topic at hand. The fanboys and haters if you will.

Also, i know that this reception issue doesn't affect me. Sure, I can replicate the death grip in some areas, but lose one or two bars at the most, only in areas with an already weak signal, and only if i hold the phone in an unnatural way for me, and only if the phone is naked. That is the only way i can cause reception to go down on my phone (or at least see the bars go down).

That scenario = absolutely no impact on my real-world use of the phone.

I'm sure some people are experience issues. If they live in an area with a weak signal, and naturally hold the phone in a death grip, and use the phone naked, this problem could, and probably does, affect their real-world use of the phone.

I can guarantee you however that a large portion of the people railing against the iphone in these forums are full of crap and more than likely don't even own one. Those saying that you can kill a call, 100% of the time, just by touching a spot on the phone with your finger?

B, freakin', S. No way.

Unless these phones all made exactly the same way have some huge unintentional difference in design, or somehow one batch got the "magic coating" while another batch didn't (don't believe this either)...unless that is the case you just are plane outright lying through your teeth.

Think about it...probably well over 2 million of these things have been sold by now (maybe 3 million?) You honestly think if every phone had this issue, and 3 million people couldn't hold a call on their new $200 or $300 phone...there wouldn't be a little bigger outcry than, for the most part, some people railing on internet message boards?

Yes, there is an issue that affects probably a pretty small % of people in real-world use. That is it.

(steve- i'll still take a free bumper though. thanks)

You pay for Apple products because of "how they look?" Wow. Unbelievable. That has got to be the quote of the year.

Incorrect: Magazines are crashing and burning. They will create and hand out any kind of award imaginable to their big ticket advertisers as more BS for the flack machine.

Magazines awards are as worthless as the iPhone 4. Actually, less, because eventually the darned things will HAVE to be fixed.

"Irrelevant" in the sense that ad dollars that Apple spends at Forbes won't make Time-Warner's Fortune run a suspect poll that gives Jobs a useless title. ;)

Had you said "Fortune", I'd agree 100%. Time-Warner's realized that putting Jobs or the latest Itoy on the cover makes the Apple fans pick up copies.

Stop man, you're embarrassing yourself.

He's been playing the same sad "Apple is doomed" broken violin since...I can't remember how long. Still burned about Blu-ray I suppose. He deserves your pity.

Nice to see all the usual suspects doing their usual thing on this thread. Sadly my iPhone 4 is working just fine and I can't add to the rage.

The antenna seems like a scientific blind spot. Apple was so in love with the idea, they ignored the significant trade off. Even if the iPhone 4 antenna picks up signals better and saves space for more stuff, it's all moot if you're required to be in excellent coverage to successfully use it.

And we're talking excellent ATT coverage here...

I still don't understand why people are complaining over something that doesn't exist. I don't have any problems with reception in my area as well as San Francisco. I was there today and I had no reception issues for voice or data. My bars hovered around 3-5 but my speed was very consistent. No dropped calls either. Furthermore, these signal issues are only proven to exist in low reception areas. This basically means, if you have low reception to begin with, you will still have low reception. And that is basically saying 1+2=3 and 2+1=3. No difference at all. You can argue bars may be misrepresented but I still got consistent speeds on SpeedTest. Stop whining about some phenomenon that only happens to a select few. None of my friends from other areas have reception issues with their iPhone 4s.

Also, AT&T has been proven to have the fastest connection (for 3G data) in the nation overall. There are multiple tests that were done by various sources. Verizon is slightly slower. The only difference is that AT&T is a little less consistent than Verizon. So Verizon is slightly slower but slightly more consistent than AT&T. AT&T is slightly faster and slightly less consistent.

From a scientific point of view, the new antenna should receive signals much better than any internal one. The only problem is some people with sweaty hands might interfere with it.

a lot of parents who decide what phones their teenage kids can have.

LOL. I have a fair amount of experience, both in software and hardware. Think about it for a minute - the purpose of an antenna is to collect signal. When you bridge the antennas, the issue is NOT that signal from the wifi/bluetooth is being sent to the 3g antenna. The issue is you have changed the effective size of the 3g antenna. It no longer functions properly as an antenna. Therefore the signal-to-noise ratio of what the antenna can send on to the circuitry drops substantially - there is nothing there for the signal processor to work with.

I'm curious, why exactly do you think the SNR changes?

Yep, sorry Aiden, I should have known you were right!!! I didn't get that he got the magazine wrong until about five posts ago. This topic's moving fast!

I never use a case -- I use bodyguardz to protect my phone from scratches, but I have never dropped a phone so I don't worry about that. In fact, I just sold my iphone 3G to a friend and the phone looks brand new (once I removed the bodyguards wrap).

I hate cases and I have never used one, but I am willing to compromise and use a case, but I think Apple should be able to compromise on their stubborn stance as well and A). Admit there is an issue and B). Offer a free solution to its customers.

I think that is more than fair. Asking me to pay another $30 to workaround a design issue is a low blow in my eyes.

FYI - I have a bodyguardz on my iphone 4 and it does not resolve the issue.
