I still don't understand why people are complaining over something that doesn't exist. I don't have any problems with reception in my area as well as San Francisco. I was there today and I had no reception issues for voice or data. My bars hovered around 3-5 but my speed was very consistent. No dropped calls either. Furthermore, these signal issues are only proven to exist in low reception areas. This basically means, if you have low reception to begin with, you will still have low reception. And that is basically saying 1+2=3 and 2+1=3. No difference at all. You can argue bars may be misrepresented but I still got consistent speeds on SpeedTest. Stop whining about some phenomenon that only happens to a select few. None of my friends from other areas have reception issues with their iPhone 4s.

So why does my 2007 iphone have reception and no drop calls in the exact same location my iPhone 4 does? Low reception areas is not the issue. It's a damn hardware design flaw. Your skin might not be as conductive as others. Simple as that.

He's been playing the same sad "Apple is doomed" broken violin since...I can't remember how long. Still burned about Blu-ray I suppose. He deserves your pity.

Nice to see all the usual suspects doing their usual thing on this thread. Sadly my iPhone 4 is working just fine and I can't add to the rage.

So drop it and buy another. Support Apple, slave. Steve needs more Buddha statues for the office.

And you won't get my pity for a second when I'm proved right. Or any other useless shill.

Gah.....I'm torn between the need to upgrade and being stuck with AT&T (due to reasons outside of a contract) and my overwhelming need to do what I can to force apple to acknowledge the problem. Their response so far has been deplorable/insulting/just plain ridiculous, and I'm afraid of what the hell they think they can get away with.

YES, we get it, any phone will have signal problems when you cover the antenna. NO phone I have EVER used completely loses a signal when you cover one spot on the phone with a finger tip (or anything else conductive for that matter).

I"m amazed at how easily distracted seemingly informed and intelligent consumers are by obvious misleading ********. They tell you guys that all phones have troubles when the antenna is covered, and it seems like everyone forgets just how ridiculous the Iphone 4's problem is. Seriously....one little finger tip sized spot brings the whole phone to a screeching halt. And the solution, straight from Steve Jobs' mouth is "You're doing it wrong, change how you hold the phone"??!?!?!!

This is just mad.....I really don't know what to think. I wish there was an android alternative on AT&T that met my needs.

*Edit*

And if it's just a problem in low-signal areas to begin with....why is it my 3g keeps on chugging no matter how I hold it yet my iphone 4 just dies whenever I bridge that antenna gap? Honestly....I would like to know.

The lesson...

phones in glass casing shouldn't throw...

Ok I've agreed with you on your point but you seem to have an axe to grind. Your posts are so angry and anti-Apple to a point that makes one wonder: why are you a regular on an Apple fan site? Certainly blind faith is an issue, but so is blind hatred.

If Apple is putting a coating on the stainless, or we are covering the antenna with our cases... why didn't Apple just keep the damn antenna *inside* the phone to begin with. Funny, the revolutionary "external," "the phone is the antenna" design appears to be less than ideal. I'd rather have a bit less reception but be able to hold my phone in a more realistic manner, and without the need to spend $$$ on a case I shouldn't need.

I think the antenna is inside the phone. The band on the outside is the ground plane (an integral part of an antenna, but not the active element). The FCC SAR plots and the tear-down pictures indicate that the cell antenna is on the bottom and the other antenna is near the top.

  • A: Your conclusions are faulty
  • B: It's mass hysteria across the globe affecting people like AnandTech, Consumer Reports, Engadget, and many others including countless consumers.
  • C: It's a mass conspiracy involving the above.

Usually the simplest answer is the correct one...

Yep, sorry Aiden, I should have known you were right!!! I didn't get that he got the magazine wrong until about five posts ago. This topic's moving fast!

:apple:

Aiden must be part of the Fortune Police. I've never seen anyone get their panties in a bunch so much over a misstatement describing the title of a magazine.

The QA team from Apple sucks. How did they let this slip up?

Corporate policy. Beta testers cost money. Apple staff got tired of doing it for free. The job was farmed off on early adopters more than a decade ago.

Where have you been?

Hey, accuracy counts. More power to him, keeping us honest.

"Why does my hand-held, pocket Mac need to make telephone calls anyway," he said realizing his iPhone serves his gaming needs and also syncs his contacts.

I never had any signal issues or dropped calls with my original iphone, 3g, or 3GS. I'll get my iPhone 4 on Jul 15, and let's see. I think this whole antenna issue is getting blown out of proportion. I guess if you have a product that has hype like the iPhone 4, there's always going to get nay-sayers. I bet the reason consumer reports put this report out is so they get some press and sell more copies of their magazine. It's all about business.

No other company makes products that are refined as Apple's, that's why people line up to buy their products. Enjoy your iPhone 4, because I know I will be. Love my iPad to.

You pay for Apple products because of "how they look?" Wow. Unbelievable. That has got to be the quote of the year.

You mean there are actually idiots out there who buy Apple products because of the way they WORK!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!??

Bwah-ha-hah-h-ah-ah-a-ha-ha--ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ah-hah-aha-h-ahahaha!!!!

Incorrect: Magazines are crashing and burning. They will create and hand out any kind of award imaginable to their big ticket advertisers as more BS for the flack machine.

Magazines awards are as worthless as the iPhone 4. Actually, less, because eventually the darned things will HAVE to be fixed.

 Wow. Is this not the very definition of "troll"? WTF do you want anyway? That everyone switches to Nokia phones and Windows machines? You're welcome to do exactly that, but why have you spent like 5 hours posting on macrumors bashing Apple? Don't you have a job? Do you really have nothing better to do? Seriously, you seem extremely mentally unbalanced, calling for Steve Jobs' head on a pike and all.

Let me tell you something, xbjllb. This is not going to be the revelatory moment you want it to be. What did you imagine exactly? That we would all say, "Oh, we were wrong about Apple products all along" because one product has a couple bugs? Seriously, in your fantasy world, how did you expect people to react? To sell their Apple stock and never touch an Apple product again? Apple is a business, which makes products, which we buy, because we like them. It's not a political movement, it's not a social movement, it's not a philosophical position. It's like a bakery that makes good cookies. If you don't like their cookies, then go to a different bakery, for crying out loud. Okay, so sometimes their products have problems. Big ****ing deal. I find the problems are exceedingly rare with Apple. If you disagree, then you're welcome to not buy them yourself.

Seriously. Go to a different cookie store.

People like you need help. Psychological help. And if it doesn't work, then just jump off a bridge, because you're pretty goddamn useless to the rest of the world. Lunatic.

:apple:

Keeping us honest is one thing, condescension is another. So if someone didn't eventually correct themselves about the Forbes/Fortune misstatement, he'd keeping saying "wrong" over and over, without adding the correction? That's less than helpful. Correct the guy up front, be helpful.

Fantastic news! You'll be loving Apple's upcoming iBankruptcy too, for sure!!

SO sorry about costing you money in the stock market today.

NOT.

:apple:

What I want is nothing you'd understand. For Apple to dump the fad iCrap and get back to making cutting edge workstation computers for adults with money. Real money.

More than you lost in the market today.

You pay for Apple products because of "how they look?" Wow. Unbelievable. That has got to be the quote of the year.

That doesn't sound so outrageous to me. Apple is well respected as a leader in the design field. Much of the appeal of their products is the look. In fact when it comes to their phones, the functionality is lacking in a lot of ways. I mean, its the fourth generation of the product and we just got multitasking!

I'm not complaining, I love my iPhone. I just don't see the fuss about someone weighing the elegant designs above the technical features.

Apple won't listen to it's users, but a drop in stock will get their attention.

I don't want a bumper to fix this problem. I think apple knew of the problem, that's why they came up with bumpers.

The proximity sensor is more of a problem for me than the reception.

How's that for irony. If you can make a phone call because of poor reception, then you most likely facedial during the call.

So, Consumer Reports is reporting a false claim to boost sales and made up their testing results?

Consumer Reports, Anandtech, Gizmodo, and the many, many forum posters that are having this issue are all lying for personal gain?

You don't even have the phone yet, so who are you to tell me (or any of us) that this is getting blown out of proportion?
